Anyone get stuck in the traffic on the Altamont today? My buddy said he's halfway across the Altamont and he's on track to be 3 hours into his commute from Manteca to Livermore. I left my house, saw the freeway was stopped and turned right around and went back home. I'm "working" in my shorts and t-shirt today at home.

I live in Mountain House and usually take Patterson Pass. It was backed up to the 205 exit at 5:50 this morning. I've NEVER seen it that bad before.

Not sure how you guys do that central valley to the bay area commute Do some simple math and add up the hours you spend in the car to/from work, instead of at work. That is a LONG ass day as well as $ out your exhaust pipe, tires, oil changes etc. You may not like the numbers you come up with but it's reality. God bless you all for your patience though but I'd implode! Just one of these days would throw me off the deep end.

Everything in life has a trade off. We left Hayward where we had to have two incomes to survive. Yeah it was close to stuff and the climate was nice, but the neighborhood wasn't that great. We had homeless people living in our dumpster from time to time. Constant traffic noise, people getting stabbed or shot, schools are a joke. Now we live in a super quiet neighborhood, friends with most of our neighbors. My wife doesn't have to work because we are in a house twice as big as our condo in Hayward and costs half as much. The schools are the top in the state and if all goes well, I'm on track to retire by age 55. I'd rather suffer a 2 hour commute to provide a better life for my family than have them live in a less than desirable neighborhood because it saves me time on my commute.

It's called sacking up and being an adult. Work hard so you can live where you want to live.

I get why you left, you were in Hayward for god's sake. Might as well have been in Oakland.
To me, it just wouldn't be worth it, If I can't get what I want. Either you sit in some shitty commute to get "more" or get less and pay up the ass like you just mentioned.
I couldn't get what I wanted in California anymore and I was born and raised....so I left. Never been happier, wish I'd done it years ago. Not going to watch a sinking ship.
Like I said, god bless your tolerance level.

I take the train to work, so I just have a short drive from my house to the train station and sleep the rest of the way into Sunnyvale. It's cheaper than driving and way less stressful. Sometimes I'll work on the train so my day will be a couple hours shorter. I'm lucky that I have a flexible job like that. I'm with you though. The wife and I talked about our retirement spot yesterday and California is definitely not in the running. As much as I love it, it's just way too costly to stay here. Ideally I'd like to spend the summer in Oregon or Colorado and winter in Arizona or somewhere on the Gulf Coast.
