After being completely disappointed with the headrest mounts I'd tried for my iPad, I decided to see what I could come up with. The headrest mounts work fine if you've only got one child and you don't mind the iPad bouncing around with the seat. I tried mounting mine on the driver seat, thinking that having someone in the seat would limit the vibration. No such luck. it also put my iPad within reach of my 3 year old. Not good either.
The cupholders at the rear of the console seemed like a perfect place to put a mount. After looking around and seeing some of the lame aftermarket cupholder mounts (often using some kind of adhesive or velcro), I decided to fabricate my own solution. The big challenge is that the cupholders actually have a slight taper. A perfect cylinder would've been too easy. The cupholder mounts themselves are solid steel, roughly 4.5 pounds each... a very firm base. Then I had them threaded for 1/2-13 4" bolts and used stainless hardware.
Basically, the mounts will accept any clamp style headrest mount. I used a 5" RAM clamp and 1.5" ball mount. The whole setup is very solid and the console is a much more rigid base for mounting. Now both kids can watch movies from a reasonable distance and the audio will stream wirelessly through the Bluetooth. I can also use a headphone jack with a splitter so they can watch a movie and I can listen to music. Perfect!
What do you guys think?
It was dark by the time I finished but these pics will give you a better idea of the finished product.

They could never reach those cupholders anyways. They're 6 and 3.

Very expensive... $180 total. You have to pay for all the set up time plus materials. The cost goes down significantly if I have them make several sets. I'm waiting for a quote on that before I decide to go that route. [ December 03, 2011, 08:51 AM: Message edited by: iceman302 ]

I might Ebay a few if the cost to do a bunch of them is reasonable and if there seems to be a good level of interest. They'll work for any current F-150 with a center console. I'm still fine tuning the fitment. If I have more done, they will sit flush with the top of the cupholders. [ December 03, 2011, 08:49 AM: Message edited by: iceman302 ]

He's going to fabricate a cupholder mount that attaches to the iPad mount

It all boils down to production cost and whether it can be done at a price point that would create sufficient demand (and profit). Also, patent costs can be extremely expensive.
