Topic: Dog growling when fed

To the experienced dog owners I need advice on how to deal with a dog that growls while being fed. I stand in front of the dog (pitbull) food when I feed him his hair on his neck always comes up. When that happens I tell him to back up and I wait for the hair to go back down. He growled at me a few times and recently showed his teeth. The dog is 9 months old and I have had him since he was 8 weeks old. Is this a dog worth keeping ? Can it be trained not to do that or not? I have shock collared him for doing this and told him no and jabbed him for it.

hit it's nose (not hard) and say firmly no.
Then don't feed them until they can behave.
That's what we did. but you need to make them know they aren't able to do that. Don't just start with that, make them wait till you say it's okay to go out the door to the yard. make them sit and stay when you watch tv. etc.

I think your dog and any dog is worth keeping. There are a few questions that could help solve the problem. Are you free feeding? If not how much food are you giving him? Does he show any kind of dominance issues?
What I have done in the past is to be as non confrontational as possible. Designate a feeding time. While the dog was eating I would toss some treats in the bowl and get closer and closer until I was right next to him. I think I repeated this process for weeks. This shows your dog that he has nothing to worry about and that you always hold the key to something better.
To supplement that I worked on any dominance issues outside of feeding using normal, everyday training methods. I would make sure to eat first, before the dog's feeding. Go through the sit/down/heel commands before feeding. No aggressive play. If you google dominance issues there are a ton of different methods to safely train him.

pits need a strong leader and if you dont be that leader they will. the dog itself isnt hopeless you just need to step it up and not be passive.
a lot of dogs with dominance issues are very possesive over thier food another good way to break them of that is to pet them while they eat [ July 21, 2011, 10:07 AM: Message edited by: 915.0gt ]

Your dog doesn't respect you, but you don't necisariley have to beat his ass. Simply bop him on the nose sternly, take his legs out from under him and put him on his back, legs up, holding them by his stomach and chest/neck area until he doesn't struggle.then let him up and tell him "good boy" for not struggling anymore. Before you give him his food, make him sit, when you set it down, make him stay until you say ok, when he is eating, if he growls, take it away and flip him on his back again. Once he behaves, start with making him sit again. If you can get him to not growl and be posessive and then use positive reinforcement (petting, lots of "good boy"s. Pits love to please, if they respect you and want to please you they will do a lot more. There is a basic training mentality called "NILF" that you can google. It stand for "nothing in life is free" (works great on kids too...) What a lot of people don't realize is that there is a difference between a dog respecting you as an alpha and a dog listening to you as a "pack leader". you have to have both.
I had a pretty built staff in the past and have a 135 pound German Shepherd right now. Both of them tried nipping me as pups with food, but after working with them i could reach in their mouth and grab a steak out of it without a second thought.
If you want some more advice, shoot me a PM and i can give you my number. If you seriously get to the point of wanting to give him up, id be willing to take a run up there some weekend if you cover gas and see if i can work with him and you to fix the problem. If you wait till he is any older/larger it will be a lot harder to fix. [ July 21, 2011, 10:58 AM: Message edited by: Farrell ]

Yup the dog thinks he is running shit, u have to show him dominance an when dude said beat his ass he didn't mean straight up animal abuse but u need to rough the dog up and let him know he is your bitch and not the other way around. Just like someone else said put the dog on his back stand over him hold him on his back til he cries let him see you are the dominant person. I've always done this with my pits since they were puppies, I would hold them on there backs and they would try and bite cause thats what puppies do and u hold their mouths shut tell them no keep em on their backs keep yelling no bite. Then when it's feeding time u should put your hands in their mouth, in the dog dish with the food, pull on their tales grab their necks(not choking, but some dogs don't like this) kick them in their nuts(not a hard kick, but anything a lil baby or child would do that the dog should get use to). All in all show this fool u run shit.

Damn you should've showed him who's boss since he was little that way you wouldn't be dealing with that. My pitbull is 11 months today N he is very well trained. Everybody in this house tells him what to do N he'll listen also I liked to pet him when he was a lil pup because I didn't with one of my mini doberman pinschers N he used to fucken attack when you got near him while eating. Not gonna lie the smack on the ass method worked perfectly.

My male Beagle was doing this, really aggressive when he had food or a treat. I would hang out and bond with him before feeding time, then I'd make him sit and make eye contact with me for several seconds before I put the food down. I would also pet him while he ate, let him know you aren't going to take his food from him. Are there other dogs involved? They tend to get aggressive when there's another dog around trying to take their stuff. My dog is totally chill now with everything, he doesn't trip out at all when there's food.

Sounds like you didn't do your homework before getting the dog. Puppies need to be socialized. I suggest holding the dog on it's back in your lap while watching tv. Touch his face, toes, feet, make sure he is comfortable with all of this. Hitting the dog will not work. If anything, it will literally come back to bite you in the ass down the road. Problem with pitbulls and their owners, they see a tough/bad ass dog and think it is tough and can be hit. Your wrong, they respond horribly to this and are some of the biggest babies (as far as dogs go) to their owners.
Read a little about dog training on a APBT forum. Be consistent and realize that your dog isn't just a bad animal, it's always the handler. After a few seconds, forget about correcting a dog, their mind is already somewhere else.

And for those who have trained pitbulls? What are they trained to do? I'd put money that 90% of peoples dogs would not respond to a call back off of leash. A dog that knows a routine, like get off the couch when my handler comes in the room, isn't trained.

Mine was trained not only to come back when off lease as we hiked a lot, but would stop dead in his track off lease, sit, lay down and stay on command if he was getting to far ahead, but didn't need to come back for any reason.....among a lot of other things.

I feed this dog three times a day 1-2 cups morning noon and night. I treat the dog well walk him run him play fetch. This is my first dog and I did some homework on how to break this behavior and nothing I have tried seems to work. I had a trainer help me but that hasn't worked. The dog didn't growl or get defensive at all while he showed me his technique. I don't want to get rid of him but I will if I can't solve this problem. Thanks for the advice ill try some of the suggestions I haven't tried yet. I will also check out the APBT forum as well.
