Just a recent observation over the past 6 months from selling parts online in the Bay Area:

I would say 40-50% of the hits I get on craigslist go something like this:

"I want those parts, but I won't be able to pick them up until I get paid on Friday"

If you have to wait to get paid to buy my $100 H-pipe, you should NOT be buying aftermarket car parts. You should be taking a look in the mirror and getting your priorities straight in life! LOL

For the record, I do not want to sell anyone car parts if that money is closely competing with funds for bread and milk.

Jebus, vent done lol

Any other observations from selling used car parts online? One more...

The Mustang community has more dreamers and tire kickers than any other automotive community I have ever been a part of. We are an optimistic bunch! [worship] [patriot] [Big Grin] [Razz]

Just because they are waiting to get paid to buy a part doesn't mean they are putting off food to get them. Why does it really matter anyway? If I have something to sell and some guy wants to refinance his house or sell his kidney to get it I could care less, its his life either way so just be happy you can actually sell a part in this economy. I usually tell those people that I won't hold the part just on that though, if I happen to have it when they get the money then its all good, I've just been burned too many people that drop off the face of the earth after sending you 40 emails saying they are going to buy something.

I disagree with your rant. Some people just prioritize differently. I can only speak from my personal perspective, but this is a 3rd in line hobby for me. So it gets funded as such. I never let my hobbies supersede feeding the fam. One thing I will say about our hobby is there are far too many people that feel "they need to keep up with the Jonses'" so to speak. So eager to come off as a baller they will risk the bread and milk money for that H-pipe. Or the people that stay under a car so long they let life pass them by. Those are the people that need to look at themselves.

Not to mention with this economy the way it is. People are treading lightly. I think it is presumptuous and absurd that you would read that much into that statement. Not to mention you have to consider the youngsters we have in the hobby, that do buy parts using their part time jobs.

I don't need food. My fox keeps me full [Big Grin]

But with so many tire kickers I'm reluctant to open a business involving cars/mustangs. Me and some friends have thrown around the idea of opening a small shop. But I think all the flakes and tire kickers could get to ya quick.

Who cares? Not everyone has endless money to throw away on their project cars. Recently money has been tight for me and theirs been a few times where I was waiting for my nxt paycheck beause I knew extra moneys was coming. But thankfully I meant some good sellers that were willing to hold onto a part for a extra day or two.

You have that in any industry. Hell I am self employed and even my industry has their fair share of tire kickers.

Interesting opinions.

I can definitely understand that there are people who dedicate some small % of their income to their hobby, and as a result, they space their projects out.

But man, hearing the 10th person this month call me and tell me that they want what I got, but will have to wait to get paid 2 weeks from now is OLD. Call me two weeks from now, and if I still have the parts, we can talk. Stop dreaming lol.

Kanye, the custom automotive business is tough. First as a reseller of parts, you are taking a tiny fraction on top of the parts that you distribute and Summit/Jegs give you no room to compete with adequate margins. American Muscle is dedicated to reselling and they are offering some niche products that Summit/Jegs does not have available. They have a very good business model and have grown to be quite a successful business. As for the service part of your business, you are then dealing with so many dreamers, tire kickers, and dead beats. I'd almost think you'd be better off opening a full service repair shop to maximize your customer pool.

And yes, N8, tirekicking is in every business, but its especially high in this hobby. Its no surprise that the term has stemmed from the automotive field.

Oh and another one, I have had people call me and ask if I would finance them on a $2500 car. Are you insane? Your credit is shot, the bank won't give you a loan, you don't have the cash upfront, you want me to walk off a cliff willingly?

Just hilarious these situations I have come across over the years.

another funny one is when ppl respond to a car for sale ad stating that if they only had the cash they'd be all over it... might as well say if i was rich, id donate the money to the poor mustang enthusiast on here. LOL

yes there are lots of dreamers and tire kickers out there and we just happen to be on the low budget end of car enthusiasts. im sure the same cant be said about folks selling parts for their bmw and other luxury cars.

You hit the nail on the head saying that we are on the low budget end of the car enthusiast spectrum. That is definitely one of the driving factors for this. The other one is supply. There is such an epic supply of these Mustangs and parts that people can afford to shop and bargain hunt... As a buyer, you might not have that luxury in the Porsche 911 Turbo world, for example.

And I definitely hear you on the "If I had the money, I would be ALL over it" LOL

#1 Bullshit Cafords Dreamer comment [worship] [Big Grin] [Razz]

I'm interested to see how many more dreamers come on here to defend the bullshit LOL [Big Grin]

I take that comment more as a compliment to either what you are selling or the price you are selling it at. I actually say it often under those pretenses. I think you guys need to get out more. Smelling too many car related fumes. [patriot] [burnout]

It's the economy. Couple that with the fact people still want to do the things they could 5 yrs ago on today's budget, it's not a good mix. Unfortunately, folks still want things "here and now" and the concept of saving a lil money and waiting isn't feasible to them. It happens.

My favorite is folks trying to bargain with me on a install for a ring and pinion set. Sure, I'm willing to help folks out...but you want me to come to your house AND do them for $100? No thanks. [Wink]

Sometimes I have thousands out on parts for a sidejob and have invested over 100 hours on them and dont get paid until the project is finish so I can see not buying any parts or doing anything with the loot until it is in hand so I guess in a sense I would be waiting to get paid.
