Is it possible to get a title for a car with a signed bill of sale from the previous owner?

you will need an application for duplicate title (reg 227) as well as a bill(s) of sale (reg 262) to show chain of ownership from the owner on DMV's records to you. If the vehicle has changed hands multiple times yo will need a signed bill of sale for each person. An odometer reading is required if the vehicle is less than 10 years old.

My recommendation to you is not to buy a vehicle that the owner cannot produce a valid California ownership certificate or is not the last owner on DMV's record. Even if it was the owner on record i still wouldnt recommend you buy it without being able to physically see the title and check for any brandings. just my .02 as a DMV employee [patriot]

Well i already bought the car.. The P.O applied for a new title and recieved it but is not awnswering my calls about picking it up. So im thinking about the worst case right now. He signed a bunch of paper work even the dmv reciept for the new title.. I'm going to go stop by his house tomorrow and see whats going on.
