Here is what I look for:
* Clean title only (no salvage titles) * Seller must smog * check all the lights, heater, ac, windows, etc * look for ripped torque boxes or bent frames * make sure all the body panels are origional and not jacked * check the radiator support and inner fenders walls * rattles, noises, and vibrations (drive it at freeway speeds) * check for smoke on start up and when driving * check maintenance records * run a carfax * check the oil and radiator fluid * check for leaks under tranny, rear diff, front and rear of oil pan, radiator, etc before and after driving it * Rust and water damage * tire wear (how much tread left and if the tires are wearing evenly)

+1 to above but add, make sure where the front seats bolt down that the sheet metal is not ripped, the front shock towers has no stress fractures in the sheet metal. and look for seam welds on all engin compartment panals (factory uses spot welds)if it has a seam weld usally means front end damage.

pull the door bezel trim so you can pull the carpet back along the doors, if the car has been on a frame machine there will be marks all over the paint on the floors there.

I won't buy a car unless the seller has the actual title and in their name. Lots of unlicensed dealers selling vehicles that have branded titles or aren't the owner on DMV's records.

Don't buy from anyone that types in ALL CAPS, MiXEs sMaLL anD cApItOl LeTterS or writes their ad like they have a 3rd grade education, you know the car has been beaten up bad with no maintenance to speak of.

[/QUi would never let any potential buyer pull anything apart, unless it was a final deciding factor with cash in hand, to many tire kickers
