I'm thinking of picking one up, perhaps a 1999-2000,5 speed, v6 or 1.8 turbo, what are your guys opinions?

I was in the market for a 02-04 model before I bought the cobra. I had to pass on getting for my wife because of the electrical issues they have, the maintenance requirements, and the interior buttons and switches are always peeling!

The TTv6 s4's are good but costly to maintain. Friends RS6 was "totaled" after it rained and water shorted the electrical. That's close to $100k of car gone to the rain.

Parts on European cars (OEM or aftermarket) are always going to be more expensive. The same goes for service and repairs. But, I have not found my '01 S4 to be any more problematic than any other car I've owned. The only nagging problem I've had is a fading LCD screen on my dash. Other than that, I'm lovin' the quattro and B5 Audis have great aftermarket support. I'd get the 1.8T over the 6 if you're looking for potential performance.

I drive an a4 daily almost 145k on her and no problems. Stay away from the 6cylinders. Mine is a 97 and I love it I got an advantage though I get parts at cost and my brother is an audi master tech .

I have an A4 v6 quattro and it runs great. Everything functions properly. Basically if you have a problem spending $25 on one bottle of coolant, $15 on the oil filter, $28 on power stearing fluid then it's not for you.
They are no different than any other car when working on them though. I've done the timing belt, water pump, thermostat, idler pulley, tensioner pulley, oil, brakes, etc with no problems. Normal maint. that all cars require eventually.
My only advise is to buy a 1998 and up. And they do sound like a ping until warmed up.
