I am interested, but the 4 cyl conversion part scares me as most 4 cyl conversions are hack jobs.
Looking to get in touch with the owner.
Also, does anyone know what smog headaches are potentially created with 4 banger conversions?
Thanks Luke [ March 07, 2009, 09:53 PM: Message edited by: Luke87GT ]

that's what I figured.
If I can't drive into a smog shop, get it smogged, and drive out, legally, it is probably a deal breaker for me.

as long as the conversion is done properly, get it...
you don't need to have it ref'ed as long as all the proper smog parts are in place....

Its not that hard to do a 4 cyl, people always talk about hack jobs on them but its pretty straight foward, if anything it might not have the v8 suspension but you could always throw that on, and even the smog stuff, when you look at it, just talk the price down acordingly.

Yea as long as the guy smogging the car does not notice it was once a 4 banger and that hes not a dickhead.
Otherwise you will be making an oppointment witht the state ref. Ive gone through this many times.

how is the guy smogging the car not going to notice it? It comes up on the DMV printout.......
and my last smog guy said the same thing but then realized V8 as an option that year....
and it passed even with the guy being a dickhead....

Does anyone know if there is a difference in the allowable emissions between a v8 and 4cyl fox of the same year?

there is no way a smog machine knows what engine came in that is way there is an under hood label tells what came engine wise an what smog equipment that needs to be on the vechile.

Right, but what I was asking about was allowable emissions. A smog tech can clearly see if the car is a V8 or a 4cyl and match that to what the VIN indicates.
TotalKaos has answered the question.
Thanks for the help guys. I think I will pass on this car.
John, thanks for the offer. Take care

this topic never gets old people never realy pay attention and never really listen! about half of the comments on this thread made me laugh at the ignorance. if any car in the same year was offerd with an engin different from the engin in your car (being the same year, make, and modle)you may leagly in the state of ca. swap the engin in no questions asked and no ref. and not a damn smog tech or cop in the state can say a damn word!

your vin number does not indicate to the smog tech what engin is supposed to be in your personal car. a serious of engin sizes that where offerd in that year pop up on his screen, he looks under the hood at your engin and hits what number your engin in your car is.

8th digit in your VIN indicates what engine your car came with from the factory

it's general knowledge that any technician knows. You use the 8th and 10th digits for smog, general diagnosis, etc. If a smog tech overlooks a 4-5.0 conversion, he's pretty much a retard and you should keep him in the back of your mind for us long tube header guys

a properly converted 4cyl does not need to go to a ref, it's an allowable motor change because it was an option for foxbodies to have v8's. The state ref at skyline college told me that when I was there getting my `89 smogged the first time because of all the misinformation I read online telling me I had to get my car ref'd and stickered. That was not the case, the ref LAUGHED at me and told me to never come back with to a ref with my car.
I've never had an issue smogging my notch at stations in norcal and in socal over the past 5 years becuase of it being a 4cyl converted car, but then again I don't do half ass hackjob work and my car looks like any other bolt-on 5.0 once you pop the hood.
