Sorry to start another gun thread but I can't seem to find the other thread about "buying your first gun."
I did a little gun window shopping today and took the HSE test to get my license From what I heard from many of the workers at Target Masters in Milpitas was that the Springfield XD-40 is a great all around gun. I'm looking for home protection and occasional range shooting. I also like the grip safety feature that it has.
The Glocks and S&W's are nice too but I dont like how they only have the trigger safety feature.
If you have or ever shot an XD-40, what do you think? Should I look into the 4" model or the Tactical 5" model? Anyone know whats good/bad about the new XD-M series? Do you guys recommend any other first guns with good safety features?

I like how the glocks look and feel in my hands but I don't like how the only safety feature it has is on the trigger. With the XD, I like the grip lock.
As for a 45...I'm new to guns so I think a 45 would be a bit much right now. I think I'll stick to a 40 as my first gun.
Pleasenll let me know if you guys recommend anything else with some decent safety features

The XD's have been through the exact same torture test as was listed above and never missed a beat. You cant go wrong with an XD. I have over 30k rounds through my first XD 40 and it has been flawless. You also cannot beat a lifetime warranty that springfield offers on all of its hand guns. I couldnt be happier with my Xd's, they are great all around guns.

i have the xd45 in the 4 inch barrel and it is a well balanced gun. Very accurate, easy to maintain and very versatile. I have it locked and loaded in my nightstand as my home defense pistol.

After watching reading more on the XD's I think this will definitely be my first gun I'm highly considering the XDM-40 but I dont know any local shops that would carry it. Anyone know of a shop in the Bay Area that carries it? If all looks good, I plan to pick one up at the gun show next weekend.
As for the color, I'm not a big fan of the green or khaki colored pistols. I was planning on getting the 2-tone silver/black or all black

id bought the 45 over the 40 as my first auto handgun and i love it it actually kicks a little bit less than the 40 plus the ammo is cheaper and easier to find plus all you gotta do with a 45 is clip someone to knock em down
go with the 45 you be happier in the long run

Why do you think it kicks less than the 40? I always thought the bigger the caliber the harder the kick
Also, I never really looked into the cost of the ammo...how much does it usually run for 40 vs 45?

it kicks a little bit less because the round is a subsonic. it defintely has some balls behind it but its not that like the kick you get from a 9 or a 40.. i think for a box of 20 your gunna pay about 27 bucks for the 40 and for the 45 its around 22 or 23.....best thing you can do is go rent both at the range and shoot em back to back

Ty...thanks for the info. I definitely plan to shoot both the 40 and 45 back to back to try them out.
I just called Target Masters to ask about the XDM and it turns out that its not legal in California I guess I'll be sticking to the XD then

i agree with TY i didn't want to post at first because people are very opinionated when you talk about guns. i agree that a 45 is a better caliber and that it is a lot smoother than the 40 cal or even the 9mm. i personally like the glock 45's and the colt 1911 45's. great home protection caliber and fun to shoot. like stated above Gunbroker.com is a good place to get a gun with cheap prices.

bought one the first week they came out way back when still in perfect condition. great all around gun if you want it for target shooting get it in 9mm way cheaper to shoot. I have a para ordnance .45 that is awesome too. I believe the xdm is still not approved for california, as they only sell them as a high cap gun therefore california says no no. One of the dudes i work with sells guns on the side.

Anyone know where the best prices are for the XD's in the Bay Area?
Target Master's wants $563 for the XD-40 Tactical. I see cheaper prices online but I dont really want to deal with the transfer fees...I really want to see the gun in person and buy it!
Please let me know how much I should be paying for one of these pistols. Maybe wait until the gun show???
