I was wondering if you guys could share a little insight or experience or maybe some links. But my sister in law is looking for a car and has around 6-7k to spend. I was looking at BMW 5 series 01 and below for her and found a couple that she likes. But I wanna open up her choices a bit more. I know we have lots of mechanics here so I thought I would ask. What is a good car, for mild commuting, has nice looks, reliable and holds resale value fairly well. And relatively good on gas. I want her to get the best bang for her buck. but still look kinda sporty when she goes out. 2-4 door is fine.

No mustangs...lol. There would be a great chance she would bap something with a bit of power behind it.

All opinions wanted.

Acura rsx
Acura tsx
Lexus is 250/300
Acura TL

All of these would be early to mid 2000 models. Not sure if they are all in the 6-7k range but something I might push.

tl's are prone to trans problems, and im a big vw audi fan, but maintenance on german cars is very expensive. example: if the battery dies and you go to start it, it throws two codes and will have to have the tb realigned, thats around a $200 fix not including the battery.
style is very important along with reliability, if i where you i would go with an a/t nissan 240sx its the beat of both worlds. [patriot]

Good looking out, but she would want something a bit more sporty in the looks dept. May go check this one out for her.

aaight...looks like I am edging closer to the BM. I am hoping I can get her a 02 on the cheap so she gets the newer light style. Seems to be a big leap in price from the 00-02 style

i guess what you're really looking for is a luxury car for 6-7k. it seems to me that audis are horrible when it comes to resale value. just remember that most luxury cars come with a price. meaning, when it's time to fix something, do not complain about it.

i think a bmw is a good choice.

Both my BMW's are older but are great cars. I've had just as much fun mashing around in them as my Mustangs and don't get hassled at all by the cops.

Yup, think something like "GHETTO FABULOUS"...lol. But yea she deserves something nice (as nice as 6k can get her). So I am throwing 3k of my own in with her 3k, so she can get a lil sumthin sumthin.

N8, I am actually in the market for a 540i (97-03) right around the same price range you mentioned.

I've heard a lot of mixed opinions about the 540 model but great things about the 530.

I've been looking for about 2 months now but holding out for a 6-speed. Seems like most of them are autos out there...

Given the economy, you should be able to find a nice 100K mile 528 or 540 from 97-01 for about $6-9K

If I am not mistaken, the 530 came out a little later in the e39...

The 530i is generally very pricey, and it will be a challenge to find a formidable example for 6-7K

Personally I am not looking forward to the maintanence costs on these cars, as they are absurdly pricey.

My dad has an 03 530 and they love it, no issues at all with it. They can be costly to repair but there are other sources for parts that are better priced. I got brand new cross drilled rotors for the front of my car for $120 off eBay and they were great quality. There are a lot of deals out there like that.

Damn I found a couple of good lookin 98+ 740's in her price range as well. Also found a nice 323 but the mileage is pretty high for a 2000 (198k). Damn this is getting hard to choose. Anyone know of any good BMW forums I can scour for information that may help in this decision?
