How would I go about getting a title for a car that has been "rescued" from the junkyard?

There's a local junkyard that has a complete nice 85 fox with a v6 that I'd like to save and swap in a v6 from a 94 - 99 Mustang.

I'm assumming all I'd have to do is get the car street legal, take it to pass smog, and....?

i baught a car from the junk yard. dmv will make you smog it and get a (brake&light inspection) from a smog place. this is my red 88lx that was a conversion. well since i have plug i passed my inspection for 70$ and smog for 250 without taking the car [Wink]

Depends on who you talk to at the DMV. I accidentally went to the DMV with the wrong title (title I had was for a junked car) and they said I couldn't do squat with it because it was "in the system as a junk title." I believe what you can do is have everything inspected and apply for a new VIN. It's a huge hassle though.

I just did what I should have done before posting, I looked on the DMV website. I found the section "How to Reregister a Slavaged Vehicle".

I have to:

1) Apply using "Application for Title or Registration"

2) Application for Salvage Certificate, Statement of Facts (to describe vehicle) and Bill of Sale.

3) Vehicle Inspection with California DMV or CHP.

4) Brake and Light Inspection

5) Weight Certificate if a truck

6) SMOG certificate

7) Registration / Service Fees.

I think a salvage vehicle is different from a junk vehicle, but I'm not sure.

A salvaged vehicle is COMPLETELY different than a junk vehicle. Once a vehicle is labeled "junk" in DMV's computer, there is no going back.

If the car has been out of DMV's computer 7+ yrs, you might get lucky and it's not going to show up. From experience, I saved a car from a junkyard (69 Dart Swinger 340/4spd) and it was a pain, and that was just with the title being branded salvaged, which is automatically done if a dismantler sells you the car.
