I have a friend that has an 03 and she has had nothing but problems with it. I guess they made some changes for 05 and up so most problems are gone by that point.

I just got a 06. Not the the tdi just the gas with the manual transmission. They had a huge overhaul in 2005.5. They had a bunch of problems with the transmissions and some motor problems before that. I am very happy with the gas mileage, features and comfort of mine. I think the newer ones share the same tranny as some audi's or something like that.

Just buy a regular 1.8t or 2.0t. I'm not sure what year you're looking into. There pretty reliable, my brothers 01 has 160k miles and been on 21-22 lbs boost with light mods since birth. Gas milage is very decent and it's pretty quick on straights and can handle the twisties. It's regularly abused, daily driven and been tracked. Only thing he's replaced is CV shafts from being too low, along with regular oil changes, plugs, etc...The tranny and motor have both lasted some time now.
His is the black one with FMIC, the red one also has very high miles. Both are daily driven and making trips regularly to car shows in SoCal, Vegas, and Washington
They're pretty roomy inside, my brother is 6'2 and I'm still able to sit behind him with leg room. Only complaint is things tend to fall apart or wear down pretty quick on the interior
