First and foremost you should copyright your name, you can do it online. Also if needed check to see if your name and mark are available for trademark. Then you need to go down to your local government office and file for your fictitious business name and all associated documents. Of course during this you will fill the actual business license forms. Once that is done you can go grab a tax ID number (you can do this online as well). Some lines of business will require various permits (thats when it gets expensive). Keep in mind some home business may require permits. In my area you are required to send a letter to all neighbors within 300 yards notifying them of your intent to run a business from your home. At which time they can protest (may be diff in your area, but ask).

Furthermore there are some other things you have to do if you are looking to become incorporated. I not too long ago went through all of this with my business (small business, to medium business, and now incorporated). It sounds hard but it is actually a pretty easy process. Be sure to ask questions, and research. Some of the license types are kinda fuzzy in their explanation. And being in the wrong one could screw you on taxes.

Also another thing is they may have you do some environmental training and get some licenses if you plan to keep industrial strength cleaning materials in your home. A friend of mine did this type of thing and they had him jump through a few hoops but he found ways around it. One good way is to find a place or person who lives in a commercial or incorporated area. Use their address for the biz lic (some home tracks are in commecial/incorp areas). Or go down to your local small business development center and ask if they have satellite offices for rent. That gives you a commercial address (but you can still store stuff at your house without them knowing [Big Grin] ). Not trying to say circumvent the system. But when you are just starting it helps. But get right later. Also big note. When you start out. They may ask you how much you see yourself making in the first year. this amount they may tax you on if you make nothing (and dont prove you did). Be honest tho. Tax free under the table money sounds good, but will come back and bite you later. If you have a good feeling you will make 50-60k..Say it, you can always provide evidence otherwise. Especially if you plan on seeking loans or investors in the first year period. They will let you put what ever amount. And I put something extremely low and killed that number in actual business and it looked kinda bad when I went to banks for $$$.

Sorry I am so long winded on this. But I am a big fan of people trying to start businesses. You can be very well off job wise but I believe if you dont at least try to start your own business. You are missing out on a big slice of the American Pie.

Good luck to you. And if you think dollars you will make dollars. Think cents and that what you will make.
