I am looking over my roomates comp, its old and has windows 95 in it. I cannot get it to go past the boot screen, it says "Bios not installed"? i hit delete to acces the bios, re-set everything to defualt settings. still nothing,i pulled off the cover and i can hear the drives spinning but thats it. heres the spec on the comp
plextor px-r412ci a-floppy c-drive=cavair 31000 2100cyl 16 heads 63spt 1063.8 mb
now it says drive failed/ floppy failed
How do you acces (or can you) the screen like the F8 on XP to set it too last known good settings etc?! any suggestions (besides buying a new comp) i can try. thanks for any help.

Can you get it to boot into safe mode?
Also try booting from a 98se boot disk. Google boot disk and you will find some good ones.
Not sure, but I also heard you can check the CMOS battery, plus make sure all RAM sticks are securely seated.

so far the only options offered is to go the bios(delete button) i tried hitting F8 but nothing happens. theres not much memory available for this comp, my friend want the 95 in it cause it wil just be used for writting documents and spread sheets. i am gonna try to reboot it with a 95 disk.

Sounds like the bios died on you. What you can do is replace the battery for the CMOS, CR2032 I believe... pull the old one out to get the correct batt #. Also, your actual bios programming could be fugged. In that case, find the mobo model number, and go to the manufacterers website to look for a bios update feature. You will have to manually flash the bios, since you cant get into windows.
if that fails still, frys may have new blank BIOS chips that you can buy. You would have to flash those as well after an install as well...
Worst case scenario? hit up eBay and look for a used mobo and swap it out. Should be pretty cheap!
You can also head to any of the major stores, online and get a whole new low spec desktop setup for a few hundred dollars.

ah, I thought the batt number was wrong.. lol I'm glad you got it man!
for the floppy, if the light is on solid with no disk in there, the cable could be on backwards... some floppy drives/cables didnt come keyed... Also, it could be dead internally, swap one from a known working comp, or buy a new one... they should be effin cheap by now.
ewwww... win95... lol
I hope it works good for you tho man!

you can get floppies dirt cheap these days, new comps dont even come with them. Another thing to try is another power source cable/plug. Good luck.

so it does or doesnt go into the Bios? If its working, aside from that... just roll on with it. Perhaps you should replace the mobo anyhow, just to prevent any future problems that might pop up.

Ewww... not good. Double check the ribbon cable and the power connections for dirt and being loose.
One thing you can try, with a good working 2nd comp, take out the suspected bad drive and slap it in the 2nd comp as an aux drive... (check and see if the suspected bad drive is set to cable select, master or slave... Slave would be best) Go into windows and re-run scan disk. You should be able to see what sectors are bad. Personally, I replace any hard-drive that has bad sectors.
