So, I picked up this car with an out of state title. It was originally a CA car, but was last titled in AZ. The last time it was registered was in 1995 in AZ. The last time it was registered in CA was in the very early 90's.
My question is, what's the best way to approach this? I called & talked to DMV, they said they will need a statement of facts from the owner saying how the car was stored & not used on CA roads all of this time. The owner is on the far side of placerville which is a 100+ mile round trip for me. I'd rather not make the trip if possible.
This car isn't on DMV records. I do have the AZ title signed and ready as well as a ca dmv bill of sale from the owner to me.
My first thought was to bring in the bill of sale & file for lost title. Play dumb about the AZ title & hope for the best. I have no idea how title records are kept between states, so I'm not sure how this would work out. If states do not cancel titles after other states issue a title for the same vehicle this should work.
2nd thought was to bring it in with title & bill of sale & just tell them he just brought the car into CA to avoid having to do a statement of facts or any potential attempt by DMV to collect back fees. [ 2014-01-12, 09:46 AM: Message edited by: FivePTSlow ]

If you have an address for the previous owner send him a certified letter via us mail, with return postage (certified mail and all) with a letter letting him know what's goin on.
Maybe even write a sample letter for him and all
That might be it, can't hurt to try

I was thinking of that too, but that does delay things a bit

How about getting well informed from the source of what exactly you need. Better to play it smart and shoot straight than get further delayed trying to pull a fast one on DMV.

If you have a signed az title then your fine, they'll make you do a vin cert a weigh cert if it's a truck and that's it. Don't think they'll checkup on it being registered in AZ.

Do not give them information they don't need. They don't need to know it hasn't been reg unless they ask.
I just bought a car in AZ last month and reg it in CA. They will ask about the AZ plates. In AZ a car that is leaving the state is supposed to surrender the plates to there dmv. The guy I bought from did this and I drove it home on a temp 30 day registration. So you can give them to the CA dmv or tell them previous owner turned them in.

Sounds like a good way to go

what ever you do, make sure you don't drive it in CA, trailer the car to the DMV or get a day pass, they will check to see if you drove the car or not. I had the same issue with NV, My motorcycle had expired and I didn't register it. NV DMV didn't care as long as I said I didn't drive it in NV, I got a day trip pass to drive it to the DMV and get it inspected. No penalties, or back DMV fee!
