if i were you, id wait for the new one that is rumored to out in june. supposedly it'll have video chat/conferencing built-in, a bigger screen, longer battery life and im sure it'll have a more powerful processor. the android operating system has a lot of promise but its playing catch-up to an iphone that has virtually all the support and then some that other phones have. if you're into apps, u cant beat the collection that the iphone offers. ppl argue that the iphone is not flexible but there are always hacks around this such as jailbreaking. i was anti iphone for many years and owned a bb prior to my 3gs and im still wondering why i waited so long.
go for the iphone...no way you'd be disappointed except for the crappy at&t coverage and dropped calls. lol if you're stuck on a particular gsm carrier another option is to drop the bucks to get an unlocked phone out of contract.

You can't upload high res videos without a wireless connection because the file size would be too large and take too long to upload. It really is more an issue with carrier than the unit itself. Our "unlimited" data is actually 5gbs a month. While it would be considered "unlimited" in terms of email and WB, uploading 100mb files would add up fast.

I've read very little about rooting. What's so great about it besides being able to remove stock applications that aren't needed?

Rooting is like having admin rights on a windows machine. Technically it's not unlocking but to the common end user it's pretty much same thing. It benefits the end user because you can run custom roms which allows you to do things verizon did not intend, full customization, and makes improvements (speed, stability, etc) on the original droid firmware all for free.
I could write a 2 page list of all the custom roms and it's features but it would be best to google those. But notable features are free wifi tether to droid, new launchers, overclocking kernels, automatic adblocking, custom mms, and increased stability/speed of the operating system. Like the iphone is to jailbreak the root/custom rom is to Droid.
Users are crazy over the 2.1 updates but those "updates" like live wallpaper feature was created on a number of roms a month ago.
