Man, i jacked my girls work computer up pretty bad. Her outlook wasn't working so I deleted office and reinstalled office with a valid serial number. It worked fine but I noticed that Service Pack 3 had never been updated so i set it to update. After I did and it restarted I got this blue screen of death. I get it when i try to click "Last Known Good Configuration" or anything like Safe Mode. It will not boot. Any ideas?

Wow it happens every single time no matter the option you try at the boot screen? Have you tried booting from a CD to see what happens? You will have to go into the BIOS and change the boot order to do this.
I am assuming this is windows XP we are talking about. Sounds like your Master Boot record is toast. You'll have to run over to bootDisk.com and make a boot disk and fix it. Also it sounds like a virus could have done this. You can try booting from command prompt. But it sounds like you will get the error there too.
Actually thinking about it. I would try to boot from the original XP cd and try to restore from there. You will get a command prompt and from there type "fixmbr". Good luck. [ November 19, 2009, 01:03 PM: Message edited by: N8 ]

Yes, it is Windows XP. Yes, if i try anything from that screen it gives me that error. If I boot from a windows XP cd it will boot to windows setup.

yeah, i tried and there is an administrator password that no one knows
Should i just take the hard drive out, put it as a slave in my other computer, backup the info and then reinstall windows?

Damn without the admin pword there is very lil you can do that way. Hmmmm, data back up is not my specialty but somehow I do not hink what you are proposing will work. But it is worth a try. But is sounds like she should get ready to lose some data.
Try the bootdisk option first. Go to bootdisk.com from another computer and try to fix the master boot record. You may still need admin pword I forget. Its been a while since I have done that. [ November 19, 2009, 01:51 PM: Message edited by: N8 ]

I have a boot disk at home that you can use to boot into windows and do a restore from a previous date. It's not a sure fire deal but it's worked for me in the past for other peoples PC's. I can spin you off a copy if you want to come pick it up in Walnut Creek.
Also you said Deleted did you delete the program or uninstall it?

Did you try to boot into safe mode? We had a failed SP3 install and the same thing happened. We had to boot into safe mode and go to the add remove programs list and remove SP3. After that it rebooted fine and ran like it did before. I just keep hitting F8 when I first turn the computer on and it goes to the window that asks how you want to boot the computer, select safe mode and it should boot.

I am sure the master boot record is toast. You also have to consider what caused that as well. So I would look into A/V after this is fixed.

Back up and running but what a bitch!
Nothing worked. Had to take the hard drive out of her computer and hook it up to mine, download all the files, put it back in her computer and start from scratch. Thank god I had enough drivers to get it back up and running. Windows XP back installed with SP3 and Office 2003 all function great.
Thanks for all your help!

I used to get this problem quite a bit. I think I just did a complete reinstall of Windows, and I lost everything. I think mine was caused from certain games that required a lot of ram. I think the error code was different.
