You can use 3/8" to 1/2" steel plate that's at least 3/4" to 1" larger outer ediameter than the diameter of the top mount that is bolted to the outside of the boat. Just make sure your bolt holes line up and you'll be fine.
When drilling through the fiberglass of your boat be sure to cover the entire area with masking tape to prevent the finish from cracking.
MEASURE TWICE AND DRILL ONCE! LOL
Good luck!

Just washers??? see i have the plate that sits on the outside of the boat, but nothing for the inside. the out side plate is about a 4" dia. circle with 3 holes that attach to the boat. do you think if i just cut up some steel plates for the back side and ran the bolts thru it would be fine? kinda of like a big washer for the back side?? i think it would give it a little more support, more than washers. by the way thanks for the advice... being a boat..im pretty sure its not going to be flat. i was kinda thinking about that as well... i have some fiberglass laying around and im thinking of kinda leveling it out back there.

For the tower it's definitely advised to put a plate underneath. Using big washers or nothing at all will lead to spider cracking. The best method is using 1/2 to 3/8th inch plate. Also I recommend fiber glassing the plate into the boat. You can use Fiberglass hairs to hold it into place and it's not to difficult.

Tons of information on there it's my local watering hole for local bay area watering holes.
PS happy boating? What type of boat?
