Walls are white and painted when purchased 2 1/2 years ago. Ceilings were not painted at that time. I'm going to paint them now. Question, do I paint them the same color, different shade, darker, brighter etc?

Thanks

i would go with a flat ceiling paint. and if you're worried about the contrasting white, u can always add some crown molding as a boundary and while you're at it put on some baseboard. its the cheap and easy upgrade u can do to the house w/ a lot of return. if it were me, i would change the paint color to something also neutral..

Not worried about contrast, I like contrast, just looking to get opinions from other home owners out there.

Definitely seperate your colors (just like the interior on vehicles) different shades if nothing else.

Dont want it to end up looking like an insane asylum.

Do yourself a favor and do ceiling paint. It rolls on alot easier and less drip than wall paints. I learned the hardway [Big Grin] . My walls are bright with white ceilings and white decorative moldings. Kinda breaks things up IMO. But what ever color you get do ceiling paint.

Not sure what "Ceiling paint" is. I've been a professional house painter for over 10 years and have never used a diff paint for the ceiling vs. the walls. I would recommend a flat color and paint the walls. Most houses are sold in basic white because it's a clean color that allows the buyer to envision their own choice of colors, as well as making the room appear larger. Darker colors will make the room feel more confined. A nice semi-gloss on the walls and I agree completely on the crown molding. Just my personal preference but I always use Kelley-Moore paint. I've used others at the customers request but they always dry slow or take alot of coats to cover well. You're lucky that the white will be easiest to cover though. Good luck

I'll check it out. I used "Decorators White" on the walls so I'll see what your suggestion looks like. I was thinking of a different shade of white, where it looks a bit different but you're not really sure if it is different.

You a pro painter and don't know about ceiling paint?

Oh and sorry I am not a pro painter just learning from mistakes. A flat paint on walls is not cool if you have kids. Again learning the hardway.

Definatly don't use the "cheap" paints like glidden or in store brands they are very stringy and a make a mess.

Behr and Kelly is what I would use.

I did however use the cheap stuff on the sprayer for the garage.

Colors well that depends on what you like. Traditionally it's a white either flat or semi gloss ceiling and the walls being painted different color. Crown molding looks great too, most of my house has it and it really helps contrast.

Oh and you don't need diff. paint for the ceiling. Just roll it slowly and with patience to help minimize splater. That way you don't end up spending money on differen't paints for this and that. Paint isn't cheap!LOL

Not trying to start shit just giving advise from experience. It looks like your ceiling paint other than drying faster is just "less durable" according to your link.

Yea I believe it is. But I dont think the ceiling is a high traffic area. Just informing, not getting anything started. And there is a huge diff in Behr paints and Glidden. I used behr on the walls and it went on butter smooth. Behr didnt have a ceiling paint when I went.

Hell yeah! I started with my garage in painting and like I said I use the cheap paint out there rolling it was so much of a pain that I just went ahead and used a sprayer on it. 15 gallons later I was done. The Behr inside went on quick with the roller and didn't usually need as much product to cover the same amount of surface.

usually not a problem in the garage but remember just like cars, primer is porous like a sponge. It offers no protection against moisture.

they have ceiling paint w/ a pink tint that makes it easier to see where you've painted and it is flat white when it completely dries. i went w/ this as it doesnt cost much more than your standard wall paint...might as well make things easier for urself while your painting the ceiling.
as far as the walls, i went with a eggshell finish as it has more shine than flat and is washable and durable. it hides drywall imperfections better than a semigloss or satin.
there is a guy in san jose advertising on CL who sells paint for like $10 a gallon(more than 50% less than retail). however, i ended up getting behr paint at HD for about $23 a gallon. the stuff came on really easy and only took about 2 coats to look right.
if you're willing to drive, for crown molding and baseboard, there is an inexpensive retailer in san leandro called moldings direct. they're also on CL and have sales occasionally. i ended up getting 4.5" crown MDF for .60 a foot, which was about 60% off regular price. search for them on CL to find a link to their website.

I just got done painting the inside of my house. I went with Charo for the living room walls and Tropical Straw for the kitchen. I painted the halls a lighter shade (Sand Stone I think). I did the celing in a differnet lighter color (don't remember exactly). I used Kelly moore paint.

A friend of mine picked all these colors for me and my place turned out GREAT. I will never paint the interior of my house white again! Also, if you have the extra time or $$$ I would suggest adding crown molding.

I can look up the color of the celing if you are interested. Just send me a PM to remind me.

EDIT: use flat in the living room, halls, dining room, and bedrooms. Use semi-gloss in the kitchen

usually full gloss in the kitchen...it wipes off food splatter easier.....sometime's called stipple

That cheap paint is crap. You end up using twice as much to cover. My wife just painted the kids rooms. I got Behr at Home depot and she got some crap at walmart. The walmart stuff was like water and very hard to cut in and work with. The brush really matters also. I always bought cheap brushes until my dad gave me this nice one. Makes the job 100% easier. I just did that pre-fab crown molding around my house. Nice and easy with no miter cuts. The only issue is if the walls are not completely true, you cant really adjust the corner pieces to well. You can kinda see it in the top of this pic.
