Well finally selling the 03 Tacoma this Friday.
Now the hard part is trying to decide which truck to buy to fit all my needs:
- 4x4 for snowboarding / camping / etc - Space to fit at least small kids in back - Reliability - Gas mileage - Ability to tow the Cobra
I'm a huge Toyota guy and was thinking of an 04 Tundra Double Cab but i'm also thinking about going with a F250(or eqiuvelent from other manuf.) with a diesel.
What do you guys think ..................

Get a chevy truck like a silverado/sierra. Chevy trucks seem to be reliable and run for days. [ November 28, 2006, 01:40 PM: Message edited by: EASTBAY5_0 ]

I know its hard to swing a Toyota Fan. I know my uncle has a crew cab Tundra and it is pretty nice. Drives like a car. For me the only two 3/4 ton or 1/2 trucks I would buy are a Ford or Chevy. Dodge has the good motor but thats about where it starts and ends. Crappy ass trucks. Thats why they sell them sooo cheap. The Duramax is solid motor, and with an awesome tranny in the Allison. Easy to make 1000lb's of TQ with them. The ford has been a great work truck for a lot of years. I know I just rolled over 221K on mine, and has never had ONE problem with it. Great truck.

221k stock motor and tranny.
Not to mention it runs 15.4 in the 1/4 mile while tipping the scales at 7000lbs!

Drew / Frank Thanks for posting as i know Drew has a F250.
I know they are reliable and can be modded failry easily which is kinda why i'd like to go with a diesel......but what kinda real world gas mileage do you get?
Also how much space is in the back of an extended cab F250 (not the CREW CAB)? Enough to fit an adult male up to Tahoe from the Bay comfortably?
Drew i can't remember if your's is a Crew or X-tended cab
Also any particular years to stay away from?

Stay away from the 6.0 (03 and up) powerstrokes. We have tons of problems with them. Any 7.3 truck from mid year 99 to 03 are the best candidates.

There are 4 guys in my truck in that Pic watching a DVD on the way to the dyno, (3 hours). There isn't a whole lot of room in the back for some real big dudes, but guys are size fit back there fine.
As for fuel milage, my truck with the 40's gets 16-12 MPG depending on how much weight I have behind her. Diesels

Oh yeah, and that truck/trailor/car setup hasn't found a single grade that it can't pull at 75+ mph.

That's all i can say about your set-up Drew (It just needs a black car on the trailer hint..hint)lol.
I dont' have to many BIG BOYZ that would ride back there but good to know average size guys can fit w/o too much trouble!
Now i think i might just look for a F250 x-tended cab but with a short bed(4x4) if i can find one like that.....i mostly see long-beds

The Xtend cab is alright, I know that the next one I get WILL be a CREW CAB. The 6.0 has been problematic since has been out. Seems like the 03/04 years are the worse. Thats the only thing that shys me away from the ford for a new truck. The 7.3 is as about as solid as a motor can be. Mine is a late model 99 or 99.5. I get around 20mpg everyday use, but I drive a lot of freeway miles. I once Towed my Trailer down to L.A. empty at 60mph I was about 24 MPG and on the way back with a load I was about 19/20MPG.

Those 7.3L F-250's are rock solid.
As for Toyota trucks, they are reliable too. I had my '89 Sr5 for about 6 years now 208k stock motor/tranny.

As Drew and Frank have already mentioned, you simply cannot go wrong with a 99 through late 03 Ford Powerstroke. 6.5" lift with 35"s and I've still managed to pull off 19 mpg. Power and torque wise you will never be able to compete with a diesel if you own a gasoline powered truck. You can pick up an excellent condition 02 Powerstroke Lariat crew cab 4X4 for around $25K with under 80,000 miles. 100,000 miles on a diesel is just break in.
