Im looking for a bottle or two of absinthe for new years. I can't find my spare bottle and it'll take too long to order it from europe. For people that don't know what it is it's stronger than everclear and is produced from this plant called Wormwood. If you drink enough its supposed to make you hallucinate. In 1905 a farmer in Switzerland killed his whole family after drinking it so they banned it in europe. You can only get it in Amsterdam and old Russian satelite countries. I think they made it legal again over there but I'm not sure.

Get it shipped from Canada. My friend has a bottle. REALLY strong licorice type flavor.

It's not worth it IMO. It's a fine line from hallucinating and getting drunk when it's 150+ proof liquor. Last time I tried it I just got sloshed and barely remembered anything.

There are tons of wormwood-free knockoff absinthes as well.

How is 136 proof stronger than 190?

And the chemical that causes the hallucinatory effect is toxic.

If you are really interested, you can learn a lot from here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absinthe

Most of the Absinthe sold throughout Europe does not have much thujone present (from wormwood) after their distilling process. Yes it is illegal in some countries, and yes most countries still sell the Absinthe, albeit without the ingredients (or very low amounts)that it is famous for.

Beverages and More actually sells it, but they take out the wormwood that produces hallucinations. It is illegal to bring it in the states from what I hear. I'm more of a fan of the beer goggles than hard alcohol hallucinations. Besides the fact that I work for Budweiser [patriot]

There are a number of places in Europe you can order from as well. I keep meaning to order to see if it actually shows, but I haven't gotten around to it. A little Googling is all it takes.

If you do order some, get the special spoon and learn the traditional way to serve it: spoon covering the glass, sugar cube on the spoon, pour the absinthe over the sugar into the glass and then light the sugar cube. Burn it for awhile and mix the sugar into the absinthe. Again, a little Googling will help.

I've had absinthe both straight up as shots and recently served traditionally in Amsterdam. The traditional method is a whole lot better tasting, and you don't get so freaking drunk from doing shots of 150 proof alchohol. (If that's what you want, get Everclear.)

thanks to luke I found this . . . [Razz]
Traditionally absinthe is poured into a glass over which a specially designed, slotted spoon is placed. A sugar cube is then deposited in the bowl of the spoon. Ice cold water is poured or dripped over the sugar until the drink is diluted 3:1 to 5:1. During this process, the components that are not soluble in water come out of solution and cloud the drink; that milky opalescence is called the "louche" (Fr. "opaque" or "shady").

A modern, more dramatic and potentially very hazardous "fire" ritual was invented by a Czech manufacturer, in which the sugar cube is drenched in absinthe then set on fire. Water is then added to drown the fire and dissolve the caramelized sugar. Generally less water is added than the traditional method.

I looked for Absinthe in every single country I traveled to in Europe last summer.

The liquor store owners all told us the same thing, and that is that the Absinthe they legally sell now is no longer the same stuff that you hear Van Gogh going crazy over.

I am sure there are still ways to get it, but not by walking into a legally lisc store.

If you buy Absinthe online or in Europe, you will get a bottle with the Absinthe label and not feel any different than drinking any other alcohol with the same alcohol content.

I drank it in Holland and Greece, and heavily at that, and never felt any different than vodka or rum. The stories behind it are fun, and it has a cool color. Besides that, save your money... unless you know something I don't [Wink]
