I just bought a sweet '98 street/road race car from Nevada. It has a Vortech V1, long tube headers, no cats, and built block so I'm guessing it might pass the sniffer for the smog test with a set of stock cats but for sure not the visual. If anyone has a pair of good cats (must be OBDII) I can buy/rent or knows of a place near the Bay Area (I'm in Palo Alto) that would be OK with letting my car slide I would really appreciate it! You should probably message me the name of any shop though since posting it could probably get them in trouble.

Also, I am planning on bumping boost up from 8lbs to 12lbs and will need a good shop to help me with a tune. I was thinking of going to Griggs since I know them from road racing but if anyone knows of a place that might be better with supercharged 4.6l tunes I am open to any suggestions. Thanks for the help!!

AED for the tune for sure [patriot]

Swap out the H-pipe and the headers and you "should" be ok as long as you have all your smog shit hooked up.

The Bay Area smog techs who were willing to look the other way are all cooling their heels in the lockup at the moment.

The other techs are all keeping their noses clean so they don't join them.

Just got 2 magnaflow 59959 high flow metallic cats which will hopefully get me past the sniffer test and won't restrict flow enough to make much hp difference. AED sounds pretty legit and $500 fixed price is a pretty good deal too. I'll keep everyone posted on the emissions test and what power I end up putting down.

Well from the news clip:

"The goal of California's Smog Check Program is to reduce air pollution by bringing vehicles into compliance with emissions standards," Mehl said. "What many people fail to realize is that keeping their vehicles well-maintained not only helps clean our air, but also saves them money in the long run."

If they were so concerned about keeping the air clean of pollution then why fail a car on visual (ie 2 cats instead of 4) when the 2 cat arrangement (in my experiences) have always run way cleaner then the stock hpipe with converters:rolleyes: They should test the car on emissions only..imho and rant:)

...and why is it illegal to buy any high flow cat in California when I might want to put one on my '65 mustang but would never put a restrictive "California legal" cat on it? That car probably pollutes 4+ times as much as most other cars on the road and a set of HFC's would really help the air but I technically can't even buy them legally.

I know Griggs does lots of his dyno tuning at RPM(www.dynotuning.com). They can get the car dialed and a tune to pass smog.
