I'm looking for a cheap alternative to 17" wheels and was thinking about the Cragar Soft 8 (397 series) steel wheels that Summit carries. I'm sure they'll be strong enough, but will they be too heavy? The weight isn't disclosed on summit's website but according to Cragar's website the "shipping weight" is 40 lbs. for 17x9's. Will this be too heavy?

I really don't want to fork over the cash for some new replica wheels but if they're my best bet I may just have to. I was also considering 99/01 cobras but realized they're only 17x8 so it'd limit me from running a wider tire. I'd probably only be able to fit a widest of 255 . I really want to go with a 275 though.

Just keep looking for some real cobra R's on here or Craig's. Cheap and they work , or try to find some Koenigs but they are harder to find now. You want the 17x9's for sure and also call Griggs and see if they have any old ones for sale. They may even have some used slicks laying around.

I wouldn't recommend slicks for someone starting out.

I've been going to the track for monthly for years and ran 17x8's with good street tires (bridgestone re01r's, yoko es100's) until just recently.

Now I run 17x9 bullitt's, a cheaper alternative is always used, even used 03/04 cobra wheels are 17x9.

the smaller wheels and street tires will let you learn your car much better than a set of wide tires all around and sticky R comps/slicks.

I'm definitely not looking to run slicks or R compounds anytime soon. I just want to get 17's because tire prices compared to 18's are almost $100 cheaper...and that's street tires like re11, rs3, star specs, etc.

I got my saleens for 399.99 plus 80 for shipping. they are 18x9 and 18x10 and gun metal in color. i got them from oewheelsllc.com

when your ready i also get Hoosier R6 275 fronts and 295 rears from a friend of mine for 440 shipped for all 4 to my front door.

Can your friend get similar pricing on street tires??
