My buddy is going to look at a Mach 1 today, what are some things he should look out for other than the basics when buying a car?

Car has 133k miles with 4.10 gears.

Thanks.

Compression. Those motors need 91 octane fuel. They burn valves in no time if you don't. Pop the coil covers off too and see if there is oil in the spark plug holes.

If the gears were done right. More often than not no.. Also whth the key on engine off make sure all the warning lites prove out. Abs. Check engine, seatbelt, airbag, park brake lamp works correctly. If the lights don't prove out someone could have removed the bulb to mask a problem. For the most part though they are good cars. Check the pinch welds where home mechanics like to jack the cars up to see if they are all crushed.

Get two keys so you don't have to go get a new one programmed. Can program a new key if you have two programmed ones. Otherwise you are paying someone to program another. Bottom of the radiator support to see if it's been over a curb or two.
