So i was driving my car yesterday and everything was fine. Ran great as always. On my way back from my destination i stopped at a spot to get a bite to eat. When i got back into my car i noticed a rattle sound knockin noise. Its not too loud at idle but when i rev a little or go it gets loud. Kind of sounds like on the passenger side. Oil is good i just did oil change 1200 miles ago. Doesnt sound like exhaust leak but i will be getting under car to do some investigation. Any idea what to look for? Will smog pump cause a sound like this? Also it still drives great. Just knocks like a bi***! Any ideas will help. Thanks

Take your serpentine belt off. It could be the air pump

Hopefully its not. I have to smog it next week. Ha fukin my luck. So if i get a shorter belt it will eliminate pump right? But i dnt wanna spend money on a belt i cant return, plus i have to smog soon. Any way to test if it is the pump

Start the car with out the belt and see if it still does it. If it does use a long screw driver and put it to your ear. It should help you narrow it down to where it's at

sounds like your bearings are shot. Do you have any oil pressure? Stock bottom end? how many miles?

Im thinkin starter issue. Ive seen a couple videos on youtuve same exact noise and it was their starter. How do i get to top bolt

Posted by 92_5.0 (Member # 7624) on :

that doesn't sound like engine knock. Your right, sounds like the starter is staying engaged

it's been awhile since I've been under my car, I'm pretty sure you'll need a long extension. I hope the flywheel isn't chewed up yet.

Flywheels looks good. I got bottom bolt off starter but top is a bitch to get to. Im stuck

it should be pretty easy with the right extension, if you don't have one grab a cheap one from harbor freight if you can

If its a aod its gunna be a bitch to take off! I took off mines by removing the header but you can remove the bolt off under and through the k member with a long ass extention and a swival.

Hell yeah. Every isle u walk down u wanna grab at least 1 item. Starter just taken off. Looks like it was getting stuck and hittin flywheel. Taking it to auto store to have them look at it. But ima jus buy a new one since it looks original anyway.

New starter in. Problem solved! What a relief! Thanks guys. The old starter was original.

Did a new starter fix it? I was thinking about the torque converter nuts. Maybe one backed out ?

Posted by SacGrown89GT (Member # 7435) on :

Yeah the starter was doing its job but since it was original it was very worn and it stayed open so the flywheel was hitting it. I did also. I also thought like u as well and im jus glad it was the damn starter. I was expectin a new motor but shit ill take a $100 fix anyway over a engine. Ha

Glad it was an easy fix! [patriot]
