I have a 1988 Mustang Im working on, it wont pass smog due to a couple of bad valves thats causing it to smoke from the exhuast. So instead of installing new valves or getting the heads re-done I picked up a set of stock e7 heads in good condition.

I have never insalled heads, I have swapped rearends, springs/suspesnion, brakes, headers/exhuast etc so I have some basic mechanical knowledge. Is it hard to do, do I need to adjust anything or can I bolt them up and go after making sure everything is clean? (Replace all gaskets etc) Any helpful advice would help, thanks!!!

i would still have the heads checked. how do you know for sure? vacuuming the valves doesnt cost to much to see how well they are seating.

At least have new valve seals put on. The umbrella style seals are garbage.

The hanes or chilton manual will help you out big time.get every thing you need b4 so you aren't goin back n forth to the parts house.its pretty straight foward.

Trust me this is an easy job! if you already have heads just go for it, you dont need to have them checked as for the valves seating properly turn them upside down on a bench and fill each pocket where the valves are seated with water if the water level stays youve got a good seal as for the valve guides themselves any sign of failure would be obvious on the face of the valves: build up. thyese are a non adjustable rocker head just torque rockers down to spec and make sure the heads themselves are retorqued in the proper sequence and your good

Dont use water or any liquid that will rust. Lap the valves in correctly and use a liquid such as lacquer thinner or diesel fuel or gasoline in well ventilated areas.

That's a lot different from swapping heads on a pushrod 302 motor....

Take intake off, remove valve cover, unbolt the rocker arms, remove push rods, remove the tube that is connecting both heads in the rear, it's good to have the chiltons , remove head Bolts , pull heads, clean surface. Repeat for install, it's good to have a chiltons . Good luck

Can someone point me towards the same topic but for a modular motor?

I used this
http://www.stangnet.com/mustang-forums/threads/pi-headswap-write-up.717166/

Along with the head changing kit from ford. I've put 35k on with no issues. Don't let the torque spec for the heads scare you just make sure you have enough space to get a full uninterrupted turn for each bolt.
