everything else passed on my stang except for the ignition timing i was running a 21 and he said that a 10 would make me pass. The power difference between running a 10 or a 21 is it big. should i change it back to a 21 after smog? thanks

no, keep it at 10, and race me so i can smoke you. [Wink]

I'm am suprised your car isn't pinging like an SOB with that kind of timing. 10 is about stock and it will have to be at 10 or real close to pass smog. Just set it, pass smog and than reset it anywhere from 10-12 or until it pings

full ignition advance doesn't kick in till around 3500, and by then the typical flowmaster exhaust setup won't allow you to hear the pinging. but in a no-power adder scenario running 21 degrees timing certainly didn't melt a piston, but max power (assuming stock heads) is usually 12-14 BTDC , the smog value is 10 (best smog #'s), and if aluminum head, somewhere around 14-16 is probably max power.

I could be wrong, but doesn't ca smog testing allow 2 degrees in each direction?

sounds right, but they're generally dicks in every direction. the max allowable idle rpm is 1100 and mine was fluctuating with a max of 1050 so they said I failed. WTF?

you've got to be kidding me? That's obserd. I'd just toss them a big FUCK YOU and head over to a more "mustang friendly" smog shop.

What a joke. [BS flag]

Just a thought but I wonder if the smog tech remembered to pull the spout connector to put it in base timing.

The acceptable range is + or - 3 degrees unless stated otherwise. ie some manufaturers spec say 8 BTDC + or - 1. RPM range is also specified by the maunfacturer.

A very good point

so set the timing so you can pass smog

the spout connector theory would make me understand better how his car is still running [Razz]

Yea my timing is at like 13 with the spout out. but with it in its like 17 i think. 21 is alot.
