How can you tell if they have gone bad?

If they're really shot, the computer will throw a code. If they're on their last leg, you'll notice a poor idle, poor MPG, poor part throttle response and the car can run rich at part throttle and idle.

If you monitor their voltage they should be rapidly changing at idle and cruise conditions. When they go bad they tend to slow down considerably.
