Sidewaysix had a dope clone for a minute he might know some stuff. I know that you can call Saleen and ask them to verify the pin. Soec.org

Thanks,

As far as opening up a salon, talk to Cobraracer46. Rumor has it she opened up a shop somewhere in the Castro.

However, Sidewaysix would have some knowledge as to what to look for in Saleen's. This one seems like the owner doesn't know much about it and I'd want to buy a Saleen from an enthusiast.

I would hit the saleen forums and see if that car has been around. I believe there is threads with list of cars that have be crashed or rebuilt as well. I would also get the vin number and contact saleen to make sure its legit.

It does have a couple things like the dual gauge pod in the center, looks like it has the styling bar. Hard to tell if there is the tonneau cover or slotted rotors. This webpage has a list of things it came with stock. Best way to find out is to get the VIN and call Saleen to verify...

It doesn't sound too sketchy... But here is what I would do before going down there to see the car. Ask him to send you a picture of the back end showing the tailpipes, car with top down, undercarriage, front bumper (it should have the Saleen #). and you will also notice if its sagging. Check for how many past owners. I believe all 96 Saleen convertibles came with a light bar. For some reason the back end 281 sticker numbers is missing.
I don't think the current owner knows much about the car.
All 96 mustangs came with all disk breaks.
The wheels look to be original and the offset is correct but they are not the magnesium style. The shifter seems to be the correct one. The floor mats are not the originals, ask him if he has them. The top looks super clean, I'm wondering if it recently was replaced. Like everyone stated call Saleen and verify the vin number. Let us know your findings.

Look this car over well

Gauge pod is not original
Gauge needles should be exactly as the speedo cluster..orange with black nose..and have the saleen S logo below the needle

Last 3 digits of vin should be 484

Last..book shows car came with Auto Trans

You can call saleen without the vin..just give them the 0404#

Looks like a nice car, but I would definitely inspector carefully. Here's my two cents:

1. Contact Saleen and browse through SOEC.org to see if you can get verification that this is a real Saleen

2. Request pictures of the matching engine bay Saleen plaque

3. Request pictures of the exhaust tips. At minimum, they should have the Saleen-specific tips that have a mesh-type outer cover (sorry, I forgot what the actual name is)

4. Request picture of front bumper # decal

5. Request picture of "Saleen" stamp on each wheel. If possible, ask to remove wheels and verify offset of front/rear wheels. It would also be good to know if the tears are the 18x10 or 18x8.5

6. Request pictures of the openings in the front/rear bumpers. Authentic bumpers had black mesh material behind the openings.

7. Ask to verify material of bumpers and side skirts, though many people cannot differentiate whether the bumpers and side skirts are fiberglass or plastic/urethane. The authentics came in all urethane, but some also had plastic side skirts if I recall correctly. Stay away from anything fiberglass!

8. Decode the vin:
-Position #5, 6, and 7 should read = P45. This decodes to a 1996 convertible S281
-Position #8 should read= X. This decodes to a SOHC v8 in an S281.

Good luck! The more pictures they can provide, the better the chances of you determining whether this car is authentic or not!
