He apparently thought someone was drowning and jumped in to save em. I mean how many people do such a thing.

Person he thought was drowning, wasn't. He lived. The officer was not a good swimmer. He panicked, went into shock, then drowned.

What the officer did was admirable, but I'm confused why someone trained to be so safety conscious would be 100 yards out on a freezing lake in windy conditions, standing on a paddle board and without a life vest.

Didn't this all start cuz the sister fell in? And she had a life jacket on. Sounds like they panicked for no reason. Still sucks someone had to die. They must a been way out there cuz you can go 200 yes at that beach and the water is only 4 or 5 ft deep.
