So I've been thinking about learning how to spray cars / paint cars. what's the best way to learn the trade? get into a body shop and learn from the guys who paints by shadowing them ? Been something I've been considering learning ... Any pros and cons of the trade ?

^^^ ever thought of buying a cheap paint gun, grab some body parts from pick n pull and try spaying/practice on them!? I don't know just a thought. Then you could get advice from some painters out there

We used a HVLP spray gun to spray coat crucibles. If you are serious about it I would not get a cheap spray gun. Typically cheaper guns don't spray good for what you are doing. They dont have the adjustability and fine tuning options that the better guns have.
I have spray a few cars in the past, and after doing coatings. The best advice I can suggest is practice practice practice... You can learn a lot by shadowing someone who is willing teach, but it's a totally different game when it's in your hands.
There are some good links to do research and learning on. Check out the eastwood channel on youtube. Kevin Tetz has a very good series to learn some basics from. He also has a good suggestion: use properly reduced kraft paint to learn how to spray with.

A good paint job is all in the prep work. Would be a great craft to learn though.

I really appreciate everyone's response and advice. Maybe one day I can get really good and have my own body shop
