I've been searching for a new house out in Antioch since I can't afford one in San Francisco or San Mateo county. After losing out on several houses and seeing almost three dozen possible houses I finally found one. I put my bid in and it was accepted by the owner. I'm so excited and I can't wait to put my two ponies in the garage.

Congratulations on the house, my condolences on your commute.

The commute to Antioch isnt that bad and the Bart will be done in two years. The house that im getting in Antioch would cost Ten times more in San Francisco alone. Its ridiculous out here and Im done paying rent !

Last time I checked Antioch is still in the Bay Area unlike the places you mentioned.

congrats on the purchase.

buy the shitiest home in the best neighborhood that you can afford..unlike what some are recommending in here.
i guarantee you the former will most often than not get you ahead for max ROI if that's important to you.

I'm in concord but owned a home in Antioch 10 years ago... If you work anywhere in or near SF or SJ, the commute is gonna get to you after the new home owner feeling wears off. Back in 2002 they told us the Hillcrest station was coming too. Congrats though!!!

if you're gonna drive them to school in the city, plan on leaving at 5-530 to get there on time. The concord commute is way shorter and I have to leave at 6 to get my daughter to school on time near Glen Park Bart.

No, I think when two year olds run in dirty diapers by themselves around the neighborhood, Where there are power wheel escalades on the sidewalk with no wheels, where cars drive 40 through a residential with no windows, where a robbery occurs at least weekly(just the neighborhood, not city), trust me I could care or less that they all were black. Yes I have pictures of some of the jungle like activity

Looks like Antioch is only "slightly" more dangerous than San Francisco where the homes are 1 million for a dump with no yard. Everyone has to start off somewhere. If you can get a house that you somewhat like in a neighborhood that is half way decent go for it. Nobody says you have to stay there forever. Make it your starter home and in a few years get something better. What your doing is better than spending money on a depreciating item like a mustang and living in an apt or renting. or living at home with mommy and daddy like some of these other people.. [Roll Eyes]

You just described almost 90% of the cities in the bay area. almost every city has low income housing. your going to find some areas like that in almost every city. And who said anything about black folks? People of color could be anyone non white [Razz]

Its crazy the conditions people are willing to live in just so they can stay in the "bay area". A ghetto ass slum house in the bay area will be an upperclass 2 story house here in Roseville.

Congrats again man. A lot people talked shit. but it dont matter u make your home yours and raise your kids right. I moved to lathrop its next to tracy and manteca i was somewhat worried at first being that we are close to stockton. But man lathrop is so small and such a quiet place i could not any happier plus we are next door to the nice side of manteca. Bay area is just so dawn pricey not even funny. Even if i was making 200k a year i would not buy an old house for 700k in the bay.

Antioch is a dump! so is Pittsburgh and Bay point. People buy houses there because they see a big house vs a smaller house for the same price in a way nicer area/city. With that 390k price you could have bought a smaller home with maybe 1200 sq. feet in a nicer area than Antioch. Good luck to you anyway. I personally would prefer a small home for the same price in a better city. No commute and not worried about being a victim of the streets.

Some of My family still lives in Antioch & just last night forgot to bring their computer in the car for a couple hours and came out to a broken window & the inside off the car had been run through. It's a nice looking neighborhood & no old cars parked around ect. And My buddy a couple weeks ago ran into get some food there during the day and someone smashed His truck window in to grab a bag with baseball equipment in it. I grew up in that town back before it went to hell and would say driving Your kids to a different city for school and parking any decent car anywhere in town is a must! If You do manage to gain some decent equity in that home take it and run before the prices do because in worse economic times prices there can drop 60-70%!

Your rite there is always someplace worse. I sold real estate there for around 10 years and the time to buy in Antioch was 4-6 years ago when prices dropped by 60-70% and now You could have took a good chunk of change and moved west. Honestly the OP is making a better move by purchasing, at least He will get a tax write off now. Hope it works out well for the OP.

I remember the worst thing that ever happened to us in Antioch (brand new 2000 sq ft + houses at that time) was that all the houses in our court had their windows smashed out in the middle of the night with rocks, flower pots, etc. that was near Bellflower and Hillcrest. Sucks seeing your kids afraid to go near the windows. At that was back around 2002. I'd def try to get a nice smaller house in a nicer area. But you never know, you may get lucky and not be affected or notice anything.

I don't think anyone here is trying to be negative, I think everyone is just trying to help out someone who is not familiar with the area.

I'm going through the same thing right now. I'm planning on moving to Indianapolis in August but looking for a place is hard since I've only been out there one time and I'm not familiar with what are good areas or not. I find what looks like a really good deal all the time but once I do more research, I find it's a really shitty area to live. It would be nice if I knew someone out there that could tell me what's a good buy or not.

Exactly, my first home purchase was in antioch, seemed like a good deal BUT it was hell. Jungle animals would of been better neighbors. I know some people(east bay 50) can live/mingle with these kind of people, but last time I checked I am full human, there is no jungle animal in my blood.

Yes, I do actually, And Although I will not disclose location, I can guarantee you its a very nice neighborhood. Listen, some of you guys can pull race cards, blame it on racial profiling etc. The fact is antioch is scum, I just gave the op fair warning that he needs to be VERY cautious, especially having kids. Most of antioch is crime ridden, dirt scum.

LOL! who said anything about race? I just asked what city you lived in since you are saying Antioch is so terrible. San Francisco has a higher crime rate than Antioch and yet it costs a million dollars for a shack with no yard. Im not saying Antioch is great but hey, we all got to start somewhere. Congrats to the O.P. for getting his first house.

AMEN! living in a pos city like Antioch is not the business. Your kids may not go to school there but you will still have to drive through that pos town to get to your house, get groceries, pump gas etc.. sure, having a nice big house sounds nice but it wont be once you see how trashy the city is. Buy a small house in a better city and you wont have to worry as much as you will if you buy in Antioch.

Fairfield aint the greatest place in the world to live but it is not that bad at all really. Ive never been robbed, or a victim of any crime. Compared to the rest of the bay area Fairfield aint too bad at all. Crime is lower here than in alot of other Bay area cities and Sacramento too

As stated before, its fine if you have lower living standards, but I myself know its a jungle like atmosphere and the facts also prove my hypothesis, I know you or others may think piling 20 welfared sec8 leaches in one home is cool/the norm, but I would never subject myself/family to people who are way less of a person than we are.

Fairfield is considered the bay area actually. Just cause you work downtown at the tire shop in a shady area don't mean I live in a crumby area lol!

With that 390k price you could have bought a smaller home with maybe 1200 sq. feet in a nicer area than Antioch. Good luck to you anyway. I personally would prefer a small home for the same price in a better city. No commute and not worried about being a victim of the streets.

Getting harder to find those kinds of homes that are turn key ready for that price in a decent low crime city. Concord isn't the greatest of cities but I consider it pretty safe in most parts and 1100 sq.ft. homes are selling for 450 and those same places that have zero upgrades and are basically all original from the 1950's can be had for mid 300's. The closer you get to Clayton the lots get bigger and the price jumps up almost a 100k for a similar sized home.

More brown and dark people = cheaper house prices.
