Nice i always love those 4 eye stangs.

Posted by sic70stang (Member # 4347) on :

i really did not like them a long time ago, then i completely changed and now like them more then the aero style. lol

How much did you pick it up for?

Posted by i (Member # 12534) on :

what's your plans for the car?

Posted by sic70stang (Member # 4347) on :

I picked it up for a partial trade and cash. Going to convert the red interior to grey and just clean it up a little. I seriously thought I was done with 5.0s but after picking this up I've been looking online and thinking of making a cruiser. Plan was to eventually sell it to fund a blower setup for my fuel injected 70 mustang.

I passed by it all the time and never really looked twice, but after checking it out its a really decent car. I worked on it in the past swapping engines.

I'm looking to paint the trim and then try and bring the paint back, ill post pics as i go.

A few questions and a cool find. First the find, looking thru the car today and found it had a 140 speedo. Shit I've been looking on here thinking of picking one up. Also has mac shorties, underdrive pulleys and 3.73 gears.

Now the question, I'm looking to paint the trim. So I want to know what to use to clean the trim before paint. Just wash and dry it or use something else?

Posted by 90GT510 (Member # 9199) on :

I'm no paint expert but I'm sure a little sanding of the trim with a higher grit sandpaper would be a step to include

Posted by Just_a_GT (Member # 10372) on :

I think a quick scuff with a red scotchbright pad then wash, dry, and paint

use grease & wax remover to clean any surface thats going to be painted also get some surgical blue tack cloths to remove small particles. these both are available at any auto paint supplier. hint i've had great success restoring trim by painting with plastidip

Hard to believe it's the same car, that looks 100x better!
Maybe grab some of that sem trim paint and spend some time touching up and that's going to look like a new 86 GT

Thanks, do you know If anyone sells the grey trim paint locally that's worth a damn. I hear people use sem paint but I've only seen it on latemodelresto.

Posted by 89TRUNK (Member # 2506) on :

Summit sells sem paint, I've also found it at my local paint store.

Posted by JUNKYARD5.0 (Member # 10398) on :

Most body shops I've worked at usually have the SEM trim paint.

Try Martin Auto Color in the east bay, they usually have SEM trim paint in stock

Try San Leandro Colors. Thats where i get my SEM trim paint. They can look up what color its supposed to be and help you get the best match.

What was your process for cleaning up the paint? It looks great and I would love to help my cousin get his '86 vert (same color) looking good again.

Posted by Stanced Stang (Member # 11891) on :

If you are going to leave it stock, then leave it SD. The SD cars actaully make something like 10hp more stock for stock IIRC. It wont make any difference with the exhaust.

Make sure you get a quality heater core and not the junk from Autozone or O'Reilly's. I did that and had to change it again after 2 years. Wasn't happy about that!!

Looks like a fun project!

I'd pop that caliper off and make sure the brake hose is back behind the strut. How it is in the picture is dangerous!

Been slow going as I am just being lazy. Almost got my 1970 back on the road but I've progressed a little. Changed the door panels to 87+ and rewired the switches. Installed the missing fog light and got those operational. Ready to drive now.
