So I work swing shift (3:00-11:30) and my girl stays home in our apartment with her 4 year old. Never thought much about it because we live in a pretty decent part of town. Tonight I get a call from her freaking out. Apparently our upstairs neighbor came out and saw some guy looking through our window from an angle as to not be seen. The guy made a shocked face when he noticed my neighbor and walked off quickly. My neighbor told my girl and she called the cops, who came out 15 minutes later with their flashlights and of course did nothing helpful. Now I'm in a situation that makes feel uneasy. I'm not a gun owner, but I'm going to go order a mossberg 12 gauge tomorrow. Anyone got any other suggestions? It sucks because i work 30-40 minutes away and feel useless to them because I can't be there.

Last year we got a call from our alarm company that the door to the backayrd was opened (the wife and I were both at work). Im guessing the opened the door heard the LOUD ass alarm and bailed, but since then im mot taking any chances. I work swing shift too and my wife is home at night with our 2 yr old. I ended up getting a .45 the day after that incident and just picked up my ak47 and now have 2 female pit bulls in the backyard lol. I would feel like shit if something ever happend to my wife and daughter and there was nothing in the house for them to protect themselves since I cant be there. My advice get a gun and teach ur girl how to use it properly.

talk to neighbors, form some kind of community watch, and request police to do a patrol check. and i hope, at the least, you're girl and the neighbor made some kind of report about the incident so that your city's police department can be accurate on crime stats and on whats occurring where...so patrols can be routed appropriately.

Could it potentially be the 4 year old baby daddy?

Teach your girl to shoot a weapon, add a couple incognito cameras and a dog. Done deal you won't regret it. I don't have cameras but my two pits do the job for me

+1 teach her how to use it as much as possible especially a mossberg 12gauge. i have that along few guns i made sure my girl knows how to use all of them. my daughter will be learning at age 5 how to shoot for this reason. No Victims here and just remember this when speaking to cops" i feared for my life and my childs life." and thats why he is cut in to 2

I didn't want to make race a factor, but the dude was black, which the POS baby daddy isn't. And it sounds like you all have the same thought I did. I'm going to check out cameras at frys today and get the order started on a shotgun. 10 days is a long time to wait at the moment.

Just get some surveillance cameras. And up motion sensor lights in areas accessible to peeping toms.

Shooting at targets is one thing. But actually pulling the trigger on someone when your adrenaline is up is another. You could hurt an innocent bystander or the gun or shotgun could be used against you or your loved ones.

A deterrent is the best way to deal with this

Sometimes deterrents don't work. If someone wants to get in, they WILL get in for what they want. Best solution is to protect yourself at the end of the day. I do hear that a lot though about pulling the trigger but then again if your lives are at risk you pull that shit. Whether it's for you, your kid or your spouse. Shoot if it was a really "free" country I'd choose to torture a theif and chop his fingers off [Smile]

I actually live in Rocklin. I've lived in this area for almost 8 years and have noticed a lot more trashy people as of the last year or so.

Talk to your neighbor and see if he will keep an eye out. Also talk to the apartment complex manager. See if they will get security.

Deterrent is just that. It's only going to make the simplest crooks turn back. It doesn't stop them. 1 gun in the hand is worth a whole Police department on the phone. True, shooting a person is harder than shooting paper. But so is coming home to a dead wife, as apposed to a wife that just shot someone. The fact that she has a gun pointed at the crook, would make all but the most determined of crooks run. That in itself is a deterrent. And does it matter if he kills her with her own gun, or his fists, knife, bat, etc, etc. Better to be armed than not.

Yes we have dogs(2 pitts). Yes we have cameras. Yes we know the neighbors. Yes my wife is a active shooter. I don't feel scared, or worried about my wife when I'm gone. [patriot]

Dogs help. At least with alerting u and intimidating intruders. I wonder if my Pitt would let an intruder slide if the thief brings him a nice rotisserie chicken lol. I doubt I really have to worry about this shit with the neighborhood I'm in right now hell my fox has been parked on the street for days lol I ain't even worried.

If you're renting in Rocklin, you're wasting all your rent money. Nows the time to buy a house dog and get a gun. Apartments are expensive out there and apparently crawling with creeps.

We're borrowing her mom's rotweiler while the 10 days go by so I can pick up my new shotgun. I'm going to put up those motion activated lamps in the dark corners around us, I don't care ifbthe complex manager likes it or not. Thanks for all the advice fellas.

Put some flyers up around the complex so everyone is aware of what's going on (including the suspect).

Looks like you have a peeping tom in ur complex

get a dog or a alarm......imma tech for comcast and i dont really like our alarm for houses i think it works well for apartments...dont have to have a comcast alarm tho just throwing it out there cause they are practically giving it away and it works well....

Thats crazy to hear since Rocklin is a very safe and nice area. I have noticed alot of trash flowing into the area now, That new Walmart/Target isnt going to help the situation at all.

Just because the area is nice, doesn't mean people don't travel from the ghetto to steal.

Yup, like having a gun in your hand, and point at him, as he looks in the window! [patriot]

What happens when your deterrents don't work? Then what? What 15 minutes for the cops to show up? Seriously what is the back up plan if your deterrents don't work?

Unless they know you have something valuable it is human nature to pursue a house with less obsticles.

If house A has cameras and motions sensor light and a dog. And house B has none of it but a gun stored in a bedroom closet. Which one is the person more than likely going to check out. House B cause he doesn't know about the gun.

Don't get me wrong. I'm pro gun ownership. But unless she has in on a holster on her, a gun is not going to stop a random thief from peeking in your home.

When a break in does occur then yes defend yourself.

But for most people's immediate reaction is to get a shotgun or get a pistol, people got to remember that possessing a gun also carries responsibility. Be prepared for legal ramifications if someone is wrongfully shot or killed.

Thanks for all the responses guys, didn't intend to start a debate over guns. I'm hanging motion activated lights tomorrow and the shotgun is on it's way. If someone comes into my home then I am willing to deal with any legal consequense of defending my family and myself. I am NOT prepared to deal with the possible consequenses of not being armed. I realize this is liberal California were laws seem to have no love for the hard working middle class, but I would sit in jail without hesitation knowing I did the right thing.
