what the heck is wrong with laptops today it seems like I barely get two years out of a laptop before it crashes and I gotta buy a new one.

with that being said the first two computers I had or Toshiba laptops and I seen the last okay this last HP Pavilion is a total POS any brands seen the last longer? are there any price point I should be looking at where I can get 4-5 years out of one of these things.

What do you want to know? Lap tops are convenient, not reliable. Desk tops are proven, and extremely customizable. Stay the hell away from Apple products if you want a User friendly setup. 9/10 you can build a custom computer, for a grip of cash, and have a computer that can last a shit ton longer than any cookie cutter PC you can buy, since you can just upgrade the parts and programs as needed.

Hope this helps,

Had the same at home PC since 2009...

First off when buying anything computer related don't just look at the price. Also research more online. Look at the specs of the computer. If you go to bestbuy most of the time they don't list everything right on paper so you might have to go to the control panel to see exactly what hardware it has. Also think about what you're going to use it for. If you're just looking to do normal day to day browsing, work, school related stuff anything with a quad core cpu and 4gb ram or more will do everything you want it to. Install an antivirus program(I'd suggest AVG since it's free and in my opinion the best antivirus software out there right now).

I have a mini ASUS PC, i've had it for 5+ years. I also have a old HP laptop i've had for 10+ years. I just built this desktop computer not that long ago, totally custom and "was" top of the line when i built it. What was failing me was windows xp so i upgraded to win 7 and i love it. XP seems to be dying since Windows isn't going to maintain it anymore after april 7th.

What stops working on your laptops? The programming or the hardware?

This. I've never had a computer crash that wasn't porn related.

I currently use a 2009 MacBook Pro. Still runs as fast and reliably as the day I bought it. Runs the newest Mac OS X and iLife and iWork software without so much as a stutter.

Did you make that unreliable part up? What do you really think is so different in a Laptop to a PC?

It has nothing to do with being a Laptop. It has everything to do with the person who uses it. I've built a handful of Gaming PC's, Servers and Media Stations.

Keep the amount of shit you install, to a minimum.

I'm not computer guy nor do I claim to be but usually what keeps failing on my laptop is the hard drive I have a feeling because I do a lot of Data logging with it and I use in shop in a shop environment as well as a home PC environment

and I mean by un reliable is the hard drive always seems to last between 18 months to 24 months my son had the same laptop and use it exclusively in his room at home in the same thing it went to two hard drives in two and a half years.my first laptop which I bought in 2000 was fairly expensive I got six six and a half years before it finally failed

what brand hard drive are you buying?

Posted by jmcclesk (Member # 1355) on :

usually the OEM replacement. the hard drives That seemed to last the shortest amount of time have all come out of HP machines the ones in a that last the longest have come out of Toshiba machines this time after talking with somebody I try to solid state hard drive they seem to think would help

I've never had a Maxtor hard drive fail on me. Maybe try one of them next time.

Are you using a traditional hard disc drive? Or solid state?

Also, you should always have a separate backup drive, so if your drive dies, you pop in a replacement and load your backup and everything is back to normal.

Posted by jmcclesk (Member # 1355) on :

I do have a backup external drive and I back things up on a semi-regular basis the hard drives that always failed have been traditional style hard drives. I bought a new one today which I believe is solid state they told me it has no moving parts and would hold up better in the kind of environment I use it in.
sorry for the grammar but I'm posting this from my phone this autocorrect is a b****

The problem with laptops is that they're terrible with heat. They overheat a lot which is bad for any electronics. That might be why your hard drive is failing. Also apple computers are overpriced. The hardware they use is no different from a regular PC. What you're mostly paying for is the brand and the OS. If you treat your computer like you would if it was your car then it should last you a pretty long time.
