well my other post got lost... so i'm really close to paint [Smile] I got 1 or 2 lil dings left. I pretty much have all the parts so once the body is painted the car should come together pretty fast. this is the exciting stage [Smile]
 - - this is the color scheme, but with satin black and satin black center for wheels - - - - gonna throw a lil 302 with an aod and make it a gas saver lol..

Damn you must have a beast of a air compressor. Thinking about doing my 65 truck in our garage. You shoot primer and paint through the same size tip?

Um...... Well full paint job or car. Got the car for free totally rust free. All chrome and interior minus engine. So as of now with engine - paint engine trans I'm a total of 1000 into it. [Smile] only thing that is really questioned is the trans. I still got to do exhaust, front seats, headliner, disk brake swap, and maybe 4 link... So I can stick some fattys under it. That's only if I like it long enough to mob it around. I really don't have enough time to be driving these old school and maintaining them. I really want to do an old School truck, since I can use a truck with 4 wheel drive.

No beer for me. We are prepping 5 forklifts at work for touch up paint. We got 4 guys ( Im the only one with blocking experience. ) working on them right now. Almost have the first two ready for some touch up etching primer and set aside. Gonna prep all 5 then paint two at a time in our shop. I'll take a pic of our ghetto paint/dexter kill room.

You got any tips you've learned from painting in your garage for a newb? Like have you built a filtration system with a couple fans to help with ventilation?

I imagine its almost impossible to lay down your base coat without at least a few dust spots, requiring a little fixing before clear coats.

I only ask because just last week I helped do some indoor painting on some big rigs and without a booth it turn out pretty damn good LOL....... Got to use a real nice paint gun. Makes me want one now. [Big Grin]

Posted by 68dustin (Member # 5388) on :

I don't build a paint boot in my garage. I just clean it well and make sure the day that i'm painting it's not windy. Of course your gonna get a few dust spots in the paint, but cutting and buffing usually fixes all that. On 2 stage paints I use a tack rag between coats to get any dust off, but on single stage paints you cant. Only use tack rag on base, not clear.

YAY! CUTTING AND BUFFING DONE! hopefully this weekend I will lay the satin and be done with paint! I'm ready to put this batch back together

I still have to do this to mine. Did you tape body lines and edges. What kind of pad did you use for cutting.

i'm sure this isn't the best stuff out there, but I've done 4 cars now with this stuff, http://www.systemfiftyone.com/?p=38 This stuff is very user friendly and I've only burnt thru 1 edge with it. (which was my fault cause I was putting too much pressure and not paying attention) How is the orange peel on your paint job?

on my 68 driver door which had pretty good orange peel after the clear dried for a few days. - this was after I cut and buffed

I would try that product if you wanna try cutting and buffing.. its really pretty easy, just time. Once you see the difference you will be addicted though..

I think because he is leaving the black flat

Well my satin didn't lay the way I wanted it. [Frown] so now the question is go with satin again and try again or say fuck it and go gloss? - - gun started acting funny. soo back to drawing board.. sanding again

Posted by 50Reasons (Member # 6452) on :

Looks good to me ! Did you shoot clear over the black I heard even doing a satin or flat that a clear must be used to achieve the perfect look and will hide any imperfections when shooting the base black color down

Posted by essasin (Member # 4741) on :

Failed attempt #1 looked pretty good to me. I wish I had pictures but I've seen a DIY matte black using a Dupli-Color Matte Clear Coat. The guy was similar to you. Learned and researched on his own and has a few paint jobs under his belt. It looked more satin with a sheen than a flat matte look.

Posted by 68dustin (Member # 5388) on :

Ya I wanted the semi gloss, but it has a light tigger stripes Don't like it, so off it comes and gloss in on the way. It was a good idea, but don't know if I'm as much of a fan of half the car satin.

Posted by 166 Merlo (Member # 1549) on :

I've sprayed a few cars but never a satin. I know its a PITA to get it right tho, especially since u cant cut n buff it. What went wrong? Looks good in pics [Whoo Whooooo!]

Posted by 75 chevy (Member # 6717) on :

told you not to do the satin!

Posted by 75 chevy (Member # 6717) on :

sand with 800 wet...
Since it is black already... Add 20% more reducer. Throw a medium tack coat....followed immediately by a medium wet coat. Wait 15 minutes at 72 degrees. If you are shooting above 85 degrees. Times speed up. And you will need to add some slower reducer. Last coat after waiting a few minutes...add like 50% more reducer. More reducer slows it down and lays it out better.

Posted by 75 chevy (Member # 6717) on :

When its really hot out...I use a clear coat blender as a reducer on the last coat. That would be the 50% reduction coat. i.e. 4 parts black.. 1 part hardener.. 1 part reducer.. plus 50% reducer by volume.
Put a 36 inch sheet of paper on the wall....test your gun out b4 you spray the car! They also make test panels you can practice on.

That's the plan! Being a garage paint job satin has to lay perfect. Well can't fix any spots with cutting and buffing so fuck it. Live and learn. Gettin a controlled environment in the garage is hard.
