i have two guns (remington 870P and 9mm glock), but im starting to think maybe the laws should be rewritten. to say they shouldnt be illegal because criminals dont care about the law and would have one anyways is like saying murder shouldnt be illegal either because normal people dont murder.

I've got a lot more weapons than that and I'll never give them up, I don't care what the law is. You don't need a gun to hurt people, there are a lot more weapons you could use. So after guns get outlawed what's next? Knives? Bats? Vehicles?

The problem is, it is way too easy for people to get their hands on guns. I own guns, hunting guns, guns that are way more powerful and accurate than assault weapons but that are in no way designed to work in close quarters. The fact that people can get there hands on guns designed to kill people is absurd. I go to the range frequently, MOST, not just a few guys carrying assault weapons don't know how to handle the weapon and can't shoot for shit. They shoot human silhouettes, what kind of fantasy do you think there are playing in there mind? Nothing good. A lot of folks buy these guns for self defense. Please, a lot of good your home defense weapon is going to do when some nut job is storming your kid's school. Banning one kind of gun is not easy, but it's something even the brainwashed legions of NRA members need to start thinking about, a little compromise. Will banning assault weapons end these types of incidents, probably not, the Maryland dudes did a lot of damage with a bolt action rifle. But, the majority of these incidents are carried out with assault weapons, it would mean much fewer of these incidents.

Now reports are saying one shooter was 18 and the other is 20, they had pistols but couldn't legally purchase them. So they obviously obtained these guns illegally.

SF Coupe- You're right, I frequent ranges too and the number of morons that handle these weapons swinging them around unaware of their surroundings just boggles my mind. Guns are easy to purchase legally but they start to get strict with that and it'll be extremely hard for a normal person to get one.

I can't wait to hear cobraracer46 view on the republican party and this shooting

On another note, the only way to protect ourselves from a military takeover of the U.S. is assault rifles.....PERIOD! My .45 and .9 won't protect at all when someone is coming at me with an assault rifle. It's like a Palestinian throwing rocks at an Israeli soldier.

This shooting makes absolutely no sense. These shootings seem to be happening in bunches and now that we have 20+ innocent children dead. What possible motive could there be to go after elementary school kids??? The high school shootings make some kind of sense because many kids get picked on so much that they totally lose it at some point.
This is really sad and really really not good for our rights as gun owners.
Unfortunately there going to have all the women's vote to ban assault rifles now. When that happens, we have an unarmed civilian America.

because we are a free country and we should have the right to own whatever we want. We start letting them ban things and they will keep banning things. They might some day ban Mustangs and make everyone drive Prius cause they are more energy efficient.

Actually, there are quite a few reasons. First of all weapons are meant to kill, on that I'm sure we agree, whether it's a deer or a human they have a single purpose, to kill. There isn't much difference between the size of a standard AR-15 and a hunting rifle for "close quarters" engagement. I just can't wrap my head around your comment about "The fact that people can get there hands on guns designed to kill people is absurd." To me, that comment is what is absurd since all guns are meant to kill.

There is no way ANY ban on ANY type of weapon will prevent this type of tragic situation from happening. If all high capacity weapons were banned tomorrow, which will probably be the case, these events can not be stopped. There are literally tens of millions of high capacity weapons already in peoples hands. Are you suggesting that the government conficate them? That will never happen and banning them now will not reduce any possible future incidents from occuring.

I totally don't understand your comment about the NRA. What you said sounded more like an anti gun person the an NRA supporter.

The comment about using human silhouette's at the range is not a crazy practice if you have home defense in mind. That's how you practice for home defense. I would not use a deer silhouette at the range if I planned to shoot an intruder...would you?

Okay "assault rifle's". First of all an AR-15 is NOT an assault weapon. That term is used by people who do not understand where the term comes from. An assault rifle is a military rifle that is select fire. It can fire semi auto, full auto or in today's military, 3 round bursts.

A civilian rifle is a rifle, is a rifle, is a rifle...period. The capacity of the magazine does not qualify a rifle as an assault rifle, only the fact that it is not fully automatic does that.

So if you want to outlaw semi auto high capacity weapons then you bring in every semi auto pistol that exists in this country. Now we're talking about semi rifles and semi pistols numbering probably over 50 million in the US.

So where do we go from here? Start with outlawing semi auto high capicity rifles. Next high capacity semi pistols. Won't stop the problem. Next confiscate all semi auto high capacity rifles and pistols. Ain't gonna happen without a MAJOR civil war.

Anyway, I sometimes use Zombie targets at the range. I guess I'm really gone in the head.

Just head right on over to Walmart, Target, the mall, practically anywhere and you'll see that those days are gone.
When you can't spank your kids anymore because they know you can't, you just gave them the power to control you.
Now you punish them with no t.v. for an hour and they've learned a lot [Frown]
My dad substituted for years in Hayward and he's been threatened with death "my brother is in a gang and he'll kill you if you do anything to me" as quoted by a 4th grader.
Just one of many threats by youngsters, he's got a bunch of others he told me.

John,

An assault rifle is any rifle that has a detachable magazine(this is according to the BATFE). Just to be clear I am a firm believer in the 2nd amendment.

Guns dont kill people.. people kill people. We have all heard it befor but, guns are no more than another piece of machinery until it gets picked up by a human. What happens after that is a concious decision by the holder.

Like I said. If we outlaw guns... then only outlaws will have them.

LoL, youre good. That was when the ban was placed on all automatic weapons(any class 3 gun or part) and assault rifles. Now to own a automatic weapon or any other weapon that is considered to be a class 3 weapon, people are now required to go through the atf for approval and have to get a tax stamp. Making it a serious pain in the ass.. A genuine full auto sear for an AR-15 will run about 7 grand after all paper work is done... I have a few friends with their class 3 weapons license so I know a thing or two.

"America must stop this predictable pattern of reaction. When an isolated, terrible event occurs, our phones ring, demanding that the NRA explain the inexplicable.

Why us? Because their story needs a villain. They want us to play the heavy in their drama of packaged grief, to provide riveting programming to run between commercials for cars and cat food.

The dirty secret of this day and age is that political gain and media ratings all too often bloom upon fresh graves.

I remember a better day, when no one dared politicize or profiteer on trauma, We kept a respectful distance then, as NRA has tried to do now. Simply being silent is so often the right thing to do.

But today, carnage comes with a catchy title, splashy graphics, regular promos and a reactionary package of legislation. Reporters perch like vultures on the balconies of hotels for a hundred miles around. Cameras jockey for shocking angles, as news anchors race to drench their microphones in the tears of victims.

Injury, shock, grief and despair shouldn't be "brought-to-you by sponsors." That's pornography. It trivializes the tragedy, it abuses vulnerable people, and maybe worst of all, it makes the unspeakable seem commonplace.

And we're often cast as the villain.

That is not our role in American society, and we will not be forced to play it. Our mission is to remain a steady beacon of strength and support for the Second Amendment, even if it has no other friend on the planet. We cannot let tragedy lay waste to the most rare and hard-won human right in history

A nation cannot gain safety by giving up freedom. This truth is older than our country Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety Ben Franklin said that.

If you like your freedoms of speech and of religion, freedom from search and seizure, freedom of the press and of privacy, to assemble and to redress grievances, then you'd better give them that eternal bodyguard called the Second Amendment. The individual right to bear arms is freedom's insurance policy, not just for your children but for infinite generations to come.

That is its singular, sacred beauty, and why we preserve it so fiercely."

I'm trying to understand what you are saying here.

I just spent 5 minutes reading and re-reading your post but I'm speechless. Just so much there that is wrong I don't know where to begin.

It's a simple message John, compromise. Give me one good practical reason for owning an assault rifle. A practical reason, not a political one.

I still haven't heard one practical reason for owning an assault rifle. You're statements regarding "assault" are getting into semantics. A semi auto AR15 is a much more efficient killing tool than a model 700 Remington bolt action rifle.

Have you read the monthly NRA magazine? There are usually two decent articles about historical weapons or new toys and the rest of it is them trying to ram their politics down your throat.

As a hunter, I see semi rifles and pistols as just toys for shooting paper. I have no use for them. I'm sure you're a normal person who enjoys it as a hobby but I see so many people at the range who have no business handling a gun and here they are with a gun that could kill a lot of people in a very short time.

there is no practical reason to eat junk food, own a mustang, smoke cigarettes, but lets face it this is america and we dont model ourselfs after the rest of the world. i think we need to take a long look at our youth and the people that are raising them.
lets stop with the back and forth and take a moment to mourn the fallen.

Because you have no use for them doesn't mean I shouldn't own them. Perhaps there are some out there that see your hunting rifle as a threat and may someday what them banned as well. Ya just never know.

The practical reason for having an assault rifle is for the military to effectively fight wars. It's not semantics. You keep saying assault rifle and you are wrong. Your Remington 700 is also used as a sniper rifle for the military but I would be wrong to refer to your toy as a sniper rifle to define it. In fact, your 700 is much closer to being a military tool for sniping then anyones semi auto AR is to being a military rifle. No military person would take an AR-15 into combat but that 700 with a good scope....hmmm.

As for a good reason to own an AR, AK, etc? See this picture? They don't even have hunting rifles, only stones. I'm pretty sure when the founding fathers created the second amendment they didn't do it so citizens could legally have weapons to hunt.

I dont think anyones worried about there guns being taken away, that will never happen. People are discussing gun control. Sadly when people who are crazy want to kill they will. A man in china stabbed 33 children today. But no one will say oh we should take away knives.

What is your plan then? Outlaw semi-auto pistols, rifles and shotguns?

I just read the other day there are an estimated 300 MILLION fiearms in the US. Lets just say 50% of those are semi-autos. Thats 150 MILLION firearms. Unfortunately for you, the 4th and 14th Amendments still apply and the Government cannot just come take those legally owned firearms from you without due process or adequate compensaton. On average, a semi-auto firearm is about $700. To properly confiscate those firearms, the government would need to pay out nearly $105 BILLION. Shit, lets just raise taxes on the rich to cover it.

Then you run into the issue of those who wouldn't give them up. Roughly 47% of the population owns guns. Lets say 75% of those own semi-autos and of those people all but 1% would turn them in. That 1% equals 1.2 million people you would need to go door to door with SWAT teams to confiscate their guns. Do you know how many years and lives it would take to confiscate those firearms? What you are proposing is completely unfeasable.

These mass shootings are becoming a regular occurrence and somthing needs to be done about it. If our elected government officials sit back and do nothing, an injustice will be done to those who have died.

Fuck the NRA. It's time for America to stand up and demand tighter gun laws.
Fuck the republican party for taking gun industry money and for being puppets of the NRA.

At the very least, guns should not be as easy to get as a carton of milk.
At the very least, any gun buyer should have to pay for and out a mountain of paper work and be subjected to a strict back ground check lasting many days and psychiatric evaluation before they can walk out any store with a gun.

Fuck the NRA and the Republican party for blocking any kind of new tighter gun laws. Fuck them!

What a waste that those innocent children had their lives cut short. May they rest in piece.

The politicians are all over this, Senator Yee just announced he is going to re try and pass his banning on button bullets here in CA, Obama is mentioning Gun Control in his speeches and the "White House" aka Obama is saying they want to reinstate the AWB and they are doing it in TV infront of the entire nation but there's no outcry for them getting political.

GUN CONTROL???? We need to invest money into identifying an treating mental illness. CRAZY people do shit like this, not normal people, not people who use guns legally. Its that nobody gives a shit about people with mental illness, look at all the homeless people out there, people who go off the handle and do these mass murders are because nobody gives a fuck about mental cases any more. And to even go see a shrink or therapist makes people feel like they are crazy so they don't do it. There should be more awareness about mental illness because there is treatment out there and its what gets cut out of budgets cause nobody seems to give a shit.

Save the gun control shit for a society rampant with guns. I think there's plenty of gun control, you cant walk into wal mart and get a 9mm can you?

Let's get to the real problem and deal with it instead of throwing it under the rug and blame something else that has nothing to do with the issue.

I can't imagine how the families feel, start a new thread to go back and forth with your pro gun, anti gun BULLSHIT, unbelieveable tragedy, totally at a loss for words, I hope the kids are in a better place, I could give a fuck about your AR15's and your rights right now, poor kids.

It's not about guns. It's about people with mental issues. If they don't have guns, theyll make bombs.

And I'm honestly way too shooken up to even comment about this tragedy. I can't even put into words how I feel as I love children and being around them. This is one of the, if not, most sad tragedy in modern history. Those kids had no idea what was happening and how to react.

How many more people need to die in this country from mass shootings before somthing is done about it?

Fuck you, you fuckin gun nuts that scream " guns don't kill people, people do." Fuck you.

Guns are too easy to get in this country and the time to significantly thigten or enact new gun laws is now.

You fucking gun blasting mother fuckers, how many more people need to die before we tighten our gun laws?

At the very least, guns should not be as easy to get as a carton of milk.
At the very least, any gun buyer should have to pay for and out a mountain of paper work and be subjected to a strict back ground check lasting many days and psychiatric evaluation before they can walk out any store with a gun.

Fuck the NRA and the Republican party for blocking any kind of new tighter gun laws. Fuck them!

What a waste that those innocent children had their lives cut short. May they rest in piece.

Guns don't kill people, people do. FUCK YOU, MOVE THE FUCK OUT OF THE U.S.A. YOU ANTI-AMERICAN DOUCHE BAG! Guns are illegal in Australia if you're looking for a place to move.

Mental Health is what needs to be revamped not gun controls. Something needs to be done to find out which people are the psychos and who aren't and then some how put that on that person so they can't buy a gun or drive a car or whatever and make sure its impossible to fake another id that says they aren't mental.
The ones they find out would kill people for no reason should be in a mental health prison and never let out. If we were able to do this more than half of murders would go away.

This isn't a fucking gun, ammo, control thing. The mother, who was shot at the house, bought and registered those guns legally. This is a mental health issue. That kid hated his mom and what his mom did, and fucking took it out on innocent kids. Who by the way, were more than likely discussing what Santa was bringing them for Christmas, or what they had planned for Christmas vacation. I just watched a report where a mother came out of the fire house where they were staging all the kids, and she told reporters,"they are dead, they are all dead."
Think of this, did she just lose all of her kids, just before one of the happiest days of her kids lives?

This is so sad to hear. I swear I have a lot to say about guns but I know people will just bicker all day about it. Like I always tell my wife. Don't worry about raising our kids in this world, let's just worry about the kids we leave in this world.

i like what Morgan Freemen had to say about the shoot yesterday:

Morgan Freeman's brilliant take on what happened yesterday :

"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine? Disturbed
people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."
