Hey folks. As the title says I'm in a bit of a pickle.

I'm thinking of finally picking up my first firearm and have come to the decision of going the shotgun route.

It will be for home defense. Eventually I'll pick up a handgun but for now I'll be picking up either the 870 or 500.

Any recommendation? Price wise they seem to be similar. I've shot a few hand guns at that gun range in Vacaville but is there a place to rent and shoot shot guns? I'd love to test em out before dropping $400+ on them.

Thanks in advance to you crazy right wing gun nuts lol.

mossberg total junk.....870 all day!!!!

Of the two, I think the 870 is a better made gun. I had a 500 in 12ga and still have one in .410.

Personally, I think the Winchester 1300 is better than both the 870 and 500.

If you're talking HD, Winchester SXP. Right now it's being sold as a "camp/field" combo which means 18" defender barrel and your choice of a 26" or 28" barrel. Basically two guns for the price of one.

I have had two Mossberg 500's and have used the 870 Remington's extensively, they are both fine weapons, also if you do decide to go the 500 route PM me.

Benelli M4 Super 90 ftw, nothing beats it. Naw but of the 2 choices id go with the 870, much better weapon and better made too

The only thing I don't like about the 870 is the location of the slide release. Having to take my finger off and in front of the trigger guard doesn't feel as natural as using my middle finger with the 500. With the 500 I can have my pointer finger just off the trigger while manipulating the slide.

The 500 is was the first shotgun & most shot pump I ever shot. Ive never had problems with one..... The only pump I've ever shot that had issues honestly was a Winchester.

The 870 action is the best design period. It has never been improved upon by any other gun maker. Most all Law Enforcement around the world uses an 870. Our CHP has used it since 1965. That said, the Mossberg is a good gun for a good price. Many of my Hunting dudes have both but generally use the Mossberg in rougher conditions and poorer weather because the 870 is a more valued piece.

I know its neither of the two options, but the Benelli Supernova is an awsome shotgun.

its not even a comparison the 870 is a better gun. but for in house protection i would still use the moss berg set up short, excellent gun with no draw backs. i dont think the 870 can be any where as close to be as short, so me trying to swing a broom <870> in my house to get a invader could get cramped. now hunting and outdoor stuff the 870.

They can both be made to the same length for in-house or in-field work

Honestly, if it's something you're thinking of getting in 18.5" and keeping under the bed for 'just in case', get whichever is cheaper/available. There's absolutely no difference in the function of the two makes/models you listed for 99% of the applications

theres a ton of 870 models/versions. i have the tactical/ home defense model. the barrel is as long as the tube is. 7 rd tube plus one in the hole.

If your looking at the 870 if you wanna save a couple of bucks you can buy the h&r pardner pump. It's a knockoff of the 870 works great actually a little better than the 870. Almost everything is interchangeable. Just not the barrel and chock tube extension.

Heres a link to a review of the pardner pump
http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2011/12/ralph/gun-review-hr-1871-pardner-pump-protector-12-gauge/

And when your ready to buy check these guys out. You can shop where you want to pic up and price. I can vouch for dom"s in livermore takes payments.

But if you really want a badass shotty get this one. Next on my list.

Went today to canyon sports in Martinez today to check em out. Still either or BUT I have been leaning towards the Remmington.

FYI Canyon Sports staff Made me feel VERY unwelcomed. Not a place I would recommend.

Yeah, they suck over there. Plus they're kind of overpriced. City Arms in Pleasant Hill or Brentwood Armory are great shops with awesome people. Also, if you're only looking for an 870 or 500, check out Big 5. They sell tons of them and have them on sale quite frequently.

they are both the same to me. both are really good shotguns. if you want to get all tacticool'd out get the 870. there is a huge aftermarket for it and you can play with it quite a bit.

that place sucks, should have drove a few more miles and went to triple A here in vallejo. besides sac. blk rifle and a couple spots in the south bay. triple A has the best selection in a 35-40 mile radius of vallejo.

to the OP check out bullseye in sanrafael for a rent and shoot session. the range sucks and is over priced but I believe they had 870's for rent once upon a time. or if you are in the south bay sometime see if REED's will rent one to you.

A watched a father take his young son in there to buy his boy a shotgun. They pulled out the more expensive ones trying to get him to buy a 1000.00 gun.
I can't stand that place so I told the guy in front of the salesmen, " If it's his first gun, I wouldn't go buying an expensive shotgun if he's just starting out. You can get a nice pump action made by Remington, Mossburg or Winchester for well under 500.00 "

The look on the salesmens face was priceless.
I'll never buy anything from their store. I personally don't like Guns & Fishing in Vacaville either. ( I got a few stories about that places customer service.)
