Tan oak or almond. Both burn pretty clean.

Know what you are looking at. Some companies will sell you unseasoned or partially seasoned wood. It won't burn. Oak, almond, eucalyptus, and madrone are all good, pine and most other conifers are garbage.

pine, cedar, tamarack, and all softwoods burn quick and hot have little ash, but will creosote up your chimney quick.

Oaks, maples, almond, and most hardwoods burn slower, have more ash and less creosote.

Split wood easier to burn than rounds, but once it's going rounds work great. In your location I would look at grabbing wood at a orchard that has been knocked down, they usually have decent prices.
