How fast can you guys run a mile?

I'm hella out of shape, but between speed walking/jogging I just ran a 14 minute mile.

Is that bad or about average?

My goal is to obviously lower that time, try for 10 mins then 7.

Did a 5k on Thanksgiving averaged a 7:36 mile.
I think an eight minute single mile is an average
for a healthy 20 something.

It means I'm shure I've ran faster at my soccer practices, just never recorded my times.

After taking a few years off from any real running I hit the gym not to long ago and clocked a 7:30 mile with ease at a consistent jog/trot while texting on my phone lol... Then again I'm a pretty athletic guy...

Im hella outta shape to and started going to the gym about a month 1/2 ago and i could only speed walk my mile in like 15min or maybe a little longer. Now i speed walk 1/4 mile and run the other 3/4 and do it in 11 1/2 min. Im hopeing to do 10min or less next!

I did my first 1/2 marathon just under 2 1/2 hours. The first half of it was MUCH quicker than the second half [Big Grin]

Don't focus on time. Just do as much as time allows when you can. You'll get into the shape you want.

I can do about 7:30 min mile now but the fastest I did in a track meet was 4:46, years ago.

I average 7:30 a mile.

I ran a half-marathon back in 08 and averaged 12mins a mile without training.

Now I just run to keep active. Im planning to do tough mudder in sept.

Mid-7's was the best I could ever do. Now it'd probably be close to 10 minutes.

5:55 was my best mile and I puked my guts out after. That was during a competition at school for a free turkey. I still lost.

before my marathon i was running 7.30 miles, since i haven't ran much since the snow and stuff i am running a 9.20mile.

I can run almost 5 minute miles on a treadmill but when i trail run i can only run 9s. Treadmills are too easy and you don't really know if you are running a mile machine could be bsing you.

False

No way you're cutting 4min off of your mile time by switching to treadmill

Ran a 5:45 when I had two happy knees

Average at 7:45 throughout a 4 mile jog. Gonna have to time myself for quickest mile, now that the subject is up.

Its easy just set the speed to it and run. No hills, or steep inclines, muddy trails or obosticals in your way, machine keeps you on pace.

Fastest mile was in high school at 5:14 when I was I shape because of soccer. Now, I could probably run it in 7-8. Started running again to get back into shape. Looking to break into the 5's again....

Track running has to be the worst. Same scenery, running in a circle, that sucks. At least the treadmill you can watch tv.

Trail running is where it's at.

I thought this thread was going to be about fastest mile in a car..oh well. My PRs back in high school/college:

HS:
4:07 Mile
9:10 Two Mile
1:56 Half Mile

College:
3:54 1500 Meters
14:53 5000 Meters

Nowadays I just stick to road coarse 10Ks and half marathons...

But back to the OP questions:). If you are just starting out then you should drastically see your mile time go down as you get into shape. The walking part is what is slowing you down. If you can run the entire mile without resorting to walking you right away may cut 3 minutes off your time. I don't care how slow you have to go on the run..just don't walk. The goal would be to get into shape first and then worry about time/measurements later. As soon as you can go that first mile without walking start running longer..add about 10-15% more distance per week...and if your feeling pain slow down or take a day off.

Well put. Thank you. I did less walking yesterday and cut 3 mins off. But yeah. Deffinitely need to be in shape first.

This is great advice. I am looking to start training for some half marathons sometime soon and this is the advice being given to me. I absolutely hate running unless its playing hoop.

Atleast it's exercise. More than some people do. I'm not trying to run the streets of vallejo, lol. Plus running on concrete is so bad for your joints. And the wildlife running, well, there's none of that around here. So I'll stick to my fake treadmill miles and continue to lose weight like I have been.

I'm already knowing. I might have to start using that more cause its way more of a workout then treadmill miles. Haha.
