Well I've started. Big thanks to John91Coupe for helping pull the motor today. Found lots of gold metal flake in the intake valley [Frown] Hoping the cam is ok, if not i might go to a hydraulic roller cam.
Going to get the heads ported and polished, putting a standard volume standard pressure oil pump in, and have the cam degreed.

Well, you made that engine pull look easy! [Smile] Good luck on the tear down.

Glad to see you're fixing it fast, I regret letting my car sit. Besides that is WAY to nice to be sitting lol. What machine shop are you going to?

Why a standard volume standard pressure pump? I would measure all your bearings now and see what they are at. I know there will be wear but should give you some kind off idea what clearance was. I would still stick with a hv pump but not a hp.

I am going to have Turbo50 rebuild my motor.

Posted by Slowback67 (Member # 6348) on :

Good luck with the rebuild Dana.

I think we should all try and guess what went wrong ( It's something every forum is know to do LOL) .... I'm gonna guess it was a bad cam bearing?

Posted by WildFire532FB (Member # 1482) on :

Also i would like to add i opened up my oil filter from when i broke in the motor and it was perfectly clean so i definitely spun the bearing at the drag strip.

Cam looked good from the little holes, has some wear but looked like normal wear to me.
When i find out what went wrong i will make another thread letting people guess [Smile] I am hoping there is a definite answer though. Like how would i know if i used too light of oil, or sucked my pan dry or something like that.

What kind of pan do you run? And what cylinder did you spin a bearing on?

Don't know yet, haven't pulled the pan but its either the 8 or the 4, i heard those are the most likely bearings to spin first.
I am running a canton oil pan.
I am gonna go to a standard oil pump because i am thinking i might have sucked the pan dry on my last run but i am more leaning to not having the correct thickness of oil in the motor. The new oil pump i got is a melling police cruiser pump

I was asking about the pan because if you have a front sump pan without a baffle the hard g forces at the track force oil out of the front sump. Also with the stroke you have I think a windage tray and crank scraper are neccesary If you don't have it already. And I don't know what oil you run but 20-50 should be it with a high zinc content

It has a windage tray, and i believe is baffled but i can't remember off the top of my head right now. i was running 10w30 [Frown]

I think your hunch was right then probably no mechanical failure just oil. I remember on my dads big block years ago he was running some thinner oil cause someone had said that it frees up some horsepower and what not well after a few runs and the tempature outside the motor lost oil pressure. Well it was the damn oil it got so hot and thinned out. Older big blocks and small blocks aren't like mod motors and ls engines that get away with 5-30 cause there clearances are so tight and there oil systems are a lot better than an older block

Yeah i heard 15w40 or 15w50 is good.

I think diesel oil just protects from fuel contamanents. I just run 20-50 with added zinc. That's what my buddy uses who runs a 800ci sonnys motor and so do a lot of top sportsman guys I know. Like the pennzoil with zinc or the Kendall with zinc all that royal purple and redline shit is all hoopla.

So my questions
1) did you call original builder
2) any hints as to reason
3) going any bigger?

No call to original builder, after i got the motor i called and emailed them for a couple of questions and they never returned my calls or emails so forget them.
No hints that i can read.
Just the porting and polishing job and having the cam degreed i think it was just set to stock before.

Yeah and didn't recieve a build sheet either. Motor ran strong though for street use. Could have been my bad with the oil thickness though. Not blaming anyone.

I doubt the weight of oil you used made any difference.

You should start with what oil pump was on it for one.

I wouldnt put ANYTHING but a KAASE pump in or on it....

Send the other one back, Dana.

I doubt the pump had anything to do with it unless it failed. I had a jet boat with a 460 using a melling pump for years and angles that boat hits and loads on the motor hundreds of hours with no problems. I think it's either a pan problem pick up problem or oil weight problem. It doesn't take very much for a bearing to get dry at high rpm. Like I said checking bearing clearances will tell you a lot about how it was built. If there's a lot of variances between bearings I wouldn't be surprised if it weren't an assembly mistake either. Mix that with some other factors it can create damage. If weight of oil makes no difference then what's the point of different weights. Different motor specs demand different weight oils simple fact thin oil in bigger clearances yields chance of damage

Ya so it is a common issue with the 385 series engines the last 460 I built had a cracked pump, it wasn't a jet boat but it was/is a 4wd f350... and john kaase is the fuckin man. Go take a look at the pump since the pan is off dana. See if that's a possibility.

Ill tear it apart and let u know what the motor tells us happened. Until then its all a guessing game.and my guess is that they used the wrong galley plugs

I'll take the pan off this weekend and check it out.
It'll be interesting to find out what the cause was.

Regardless of what pump you choose...take it apart and inspect it, clean it, and lube.
Ive seen a few BRAND NEW pumps including tricked out blueprinted by all but Jesus Christ himself that had metal shavings and crud in them.

Good luck Dana that sweet ride of yours certainly deserves a properly built motor.

Yeah i plan on doing that and taking all the burrs off. Didn't do that with the pump in it.

how close was the pick up to the bottom of your pan? what if they shipped the motor with the wrong pick up.

That's what I was thinking ..pick up didn't reach all the oil..sucked oil into lifter valley then bearings went dry [Confused]

That's an excellent point. Bad things can happen if the pickup is too close or too far away from the bottom of the pan.

Got the pan off, looks like i possibly spun 4 rub bearings, the rods are loose. Maybe more cause there are a lot of piece of metal in the front sump as well but those rods don't move side to side like the others. I'll post pics tonight.

The rods are supposed to be loose have side to side movement.

Its when they wont move that you worry.

Dan

Yea cause when you get crank thrust you don't want the rods moving with it. Hopefully your crank doesn't have any deep groves or scratches and can just take a micro polish if anything

Ok then the front 4 are bad lol. I can't move them at all.

Also i was wrong they are Probe pistons not JE's

From where that pick up locates in the pan it looks like being just a quart low would cause some danger. But it's hard to tell from that pic the demension of the pan.

We measured it with modeling clay before putting the pan on its correct distance from the bottom of the pan.

what kind of cam are you running?? i might have the same rotating assembly as you Scat crank and rods with Probe forged pistons. also Looks like we have similar builds but im running a 260/269 solid roller, an 1150 Dominator carb and TFS heads.Could the gold metal shavings just be from a bronze distributor gear or cam thrust plate? or are you definately having oil pressure problems?

anyways i had Paul Kane modify my melling oil pump. He's here in the bay area and is well known on 460ford.com and good dude to deal with. he builds jet boat engines.

Just a heads up, ALL the bearings in my motor were gone (cam, Main and Rods) and the block was sleeved wrong so the block is junk too.
Good thing is i found the same block in my area for 200 dollars.
Also i am upgrading from my .588/.614 flat tappet cam to a .641/.647 hydraulic roller cam.
Hoping to make more power to the rear wheels, looking for 600rwhp but we'll see.
Heads and Intake are going to be ported and polished as well.

sound s good!! Now that my 533 is tuned better I'm hoping for 550rwhp through my c6. Are you sure you want to go with hydraulic roller? From what I've read, people have been having a hard time getting them to live on the 385 series.lifters too tall and bad pushrod angles. everyone on 460ford says its better to just go solid roller.

Paul Kane is involved in the build and he will argue that fact but there is a ton of knowledge and some beasts on 460ford.com

he was involved in mine too. he actually put my shortblock together and port matched my intake and recommended i go with a solid roller. Cam was ground by scottyj. If he has more confidence in the hyd. roller lifters now then i guess thats a good thing, wont make much if any more power than the solid flat tappets but the peace of mind of hydraulic is definately worth it. How much are they going for nowadays?

What price are you asking for?

From what i have heard if i had the exact same cams one solid flat tappet in the same motor and one hydraulic roller. The hydraulic roller would make 15 more HP.

it depends on the engine. The 385 series hyd. roller lifters are big and heavy. I wouldn't really expect more power out of it vs. a solid flat tappet, you might see more but not much of a difference. The biggest difference will be No maintenance.

I had Paul Kane rebuild my original oil pump. We took it apart and there was no damage, looked brand new inside, no metal at all.

Dana, that still doesnt make sense. A real grandma could/should run double + The MPH's The car ran. I hope you get a real engine/tune package this time, you were shorted previously!

From the damage and the re-balancing of the new motor sounds like the old one was never balanced correctly, not sure if that would cause it.

Yeah must have been down on power before. New set up should be dialed in. My 69 Camaro and your 67 would probably be a fun race..plus they would both look sick going down the track!

Safety feature in case it backfires. The intake pops off without messing up the carb.

Looks good. Should be a fun and economical grocery getter.

Didn't get the motor in today like i wanted [Frown] The pilot bearing was a bitch to get out, had to go back and forth to the autoparts store to get the right one, then the flywheel was a pain in the ass as well and then the clutch was a pain in the ass, not to mention i have a pain in my ass from running 9 miles this morning lol.

Don't know, been meaning to weight it. Might take it to the trash dump and see if they will let me weight it on the scales.

neight If if I remember right, a stock iron headed sbf fastback 67/68 is around 33-3400lbs. add the weight of the big block and the fact there is a mustang II setup, plus what the rear may have a few extra lbs depending on suspension setup. really doesn't matter cause well over 500ftlbs of torque will move it just fine!

If it dont make the power you want, spray the fuck out of it.

After you change rockers to real ones, that motor is bullet proof.

Jeeps gonna be a big project, one of the timing chain cover bolts snapped so its leaking oil out of there, the transmission needs a rebuild. Hopefully finish by the end of next year lol.
