I'm seriously contemplating getting a part time job. I don't know how well I would cope with it, but the housing bug has bit me and I really want to get into the market. With my obsession of toys and such, I'm not going to be able to afford both.

Problem is, I have no idea what I should look into doing part time, that is worth my time/money. I have a full time job in IT. The pay is ok, but not enough to afford anything in the San Jose area. If anybody here is working a full time and a part time, please chime in - would like to hear how other people are doing it.

I hate it. It is killing my body, my marriage and my social life.

My family is living good and I am doing ok financially but other than that, you can have it.

Do you have kids? I so I would advise against it. I work a ton of hours that almost equate to 2 jobs. My wife has to come snap me out of it from time to time.

My take
I would not do it just for the reason you stated above. The drop in quality of life would make it not worth it to me. Becoming a work-a-holic and chasing a buck becomes a addiction. I would say look for advancement in your chosen field first.

Or...

Stay with your current situation buy a small rental property and go from there.

I do full time IT at a video game studio (only IT guy, so I do everything). That pays my bills (house, 2 car payments, insurance, utility's, wife going to school, etc)

and I also do IT at a local charter K-8 school. I work probably an average of 10-15 hours a week there, they pay me $15/hr and I use that money for toys.

it's not easy, but the extra few hundred dollars a month is nice to have, plus it feels good to help out a great school, I was their assigned IT person from the school district that sponsered them when they first opened their doors 4 years ago, when I left that job to get my current gig at the game studio the district didn't have anyone to assign to the charter school so I just kept helping them out whenever they need it.

Dan, is your 2nd job just doing the side jobs that you do? You look like you're doing well though. Didn't know it was playing a toll on you like that (other than the whole leg fiasco).

To those of you working 2 full time jobs... [Eek!] [worship]

No kids N8. But I look at myself, and if someone is unlucky enough to choose me and start a family with me in the future, I want to be set for it. I don't have too many things to be proud of - I goofed up the first few years in college, then managed to get by while living at home and working until I got my degree. I don't have any student loans, and I'm in a position now where I actually don't have any debt. Now is the time I start saving, but doing the math, it will be YEARS before I have enough cash to make a wise decision on a down payment for a house. I need and want to speed up that process. I figure I'm 29 and I can still beat on my body for a little bit, and if I was able to work, goto school, and goof off, I can try to spend that type of time again.

To be honest sounds like you have a lot to be proud of. But good luck, just keep the awareness about you to realize when you are becoming a slave to the mighty dollar. Work smarter not harder.

Ive had 2 jobs for the last 3 years, going on 4. My main job for the last 3 years has been UPS. They only offer part time, full benefits(until high seniority they offer full time)and UPS checks werent doing it, so ive always had a 2nd part time. This last year I basically had one full time and UPS part time. Im about to turn 22 next month. Didnt do college, did Wyotech(electrical, havent found a job. still trying) so thats why i bust my ass. Dont have another option. Dont really have a social life, but in about a year and half, 2 years the latest, I will be a full time driver for UPS and wont have to worry about having 2 jobs cus they pay good. Drivers that is. If you are looking for a part time with full benefits, UPS is the place to be, shitty pay though. something to think about

+1. Reason I work two jobs is my part time gives me benifits and my full time job does not, my full time is the one I make really good money.

For all you IT guys out her on CA fords. I work for a Tech support company called SupportSpace. We partner with company's like Geeksquad and Microsoft. What we do is provide remote services for their customers. We have experts who work from home or from where ever they want. Any of you that are good at IT stuff can attempt to become an expert for us. The gig is good and our experts make good money. You can set your own hours and all that good stuff. Or just come on to support customer's when ever you'd like. Our experts our considered to be third party contractors so you pay your own taxes and no benefits but the pay is GOOD. I think this can be a good option for you DLo. Anyone who is interested PM me and I can give you guys more info. This gig is legit and profitable so if you think it's too good to be true it's not were just a start up company that has only been around like 5 years. Im confident we will be here for a long time tho. Give it a try guys if your good on the phone/chat with customers and good with computers(PC/MACS). We have a lot of experts that do this to get more money. But it can become your only job if you work hard at it. We have some crazy guys that will work like all day and they some have made over $20,000 in a month(before taxes). I'm not trying to recruit anyone just trying to help someone out. I worked two jobs for about 5 years up until January, 2011. It does take a toll on your body and social life, but you have to figure out what your priorities are first.

My experience is that hard work will always pays off in the long run. Those five years taught me a lot about discipline and time management, which I have carried into my current role.

Every person is different and every person has a different outlook on working two jobs. My view is that I rather have more money and less time, than more time and less money.

i work 2 full time jobs i start my repo work tuesday-saturday 1:30-2:00am until im done with my route (generally pick up 3-6 cars per day) that sends me all over the place from marin down to king city out to merced. i work on call doing private property tow aways 7 days a week in the san mateo area when im not on route for repos.

ive been working like this for 5+ years
i normally just take naps sometimes i can get 4-5 hours of sleep.

its worth it to me because i still have time to spend with my wife and do projects around the house.
