Almost got caught up last night, not worth the risk. What do I look for when shopping for a radar detector? Which stores have good ones I can go and buy?

Don't get a detector, get a jammer [Wink]

I heard for sure jammers are illegal.
Also i kno alot of ppl have the radar detector "thingy" but u can still get a ticket for that. I think its obstruction of view is what they call it. An example is u cant have anything hanging from your rear view mirror like a lanyard or air freshner youll get a ticket.

I think radar detectors are good for the city streets no? In case a cop is sitting down, not shooting the gun but with a radar on their cars no? Correct me if I am wrong, my information could be wrong/out of date.

Jammers do work if you know where to get them. Highly illegal but what else is illegal on your car lol.

Posted by 90GT510 (Member # 9199) on :

Its only an obstruction ticket in CA and Minnesota.i don't need to worry about that. Thanks I'll be checking out the Valentine.

I use one daily! well almost daily. The few times in the past 3 years I didn't have it with me, I got 2 speeding tickets (same fucking cop). They do work well. It alerts you nearly a mile or so before you approach them.

The one I have picks up laser, radar and lidar

V-1 or you're wasting your $$$.

Saved my buddies ass and mine 2-3 times. Insurance hikes along with moving violations are ridiculous enough to merit it's seemingly high price factor.

had a valentine 1.. worked great.. then it got stolen. i replaced it with a Beltronics STi driver and it works just as good, if not better... only downside is that it doesnt have the arrows of where the signal is coming from..

I have a Cobra 12 Band radar/lidar detector. Payed around $90 for mine and it has saved me at least 8-10 times in the past 3 years. 1st time was on the San Mateo Bridge doing about 90mph.. Ka band went off, then Lidar went off, and 1/2 mile later there was a CHP waiting for speeders. Doesn't completely protect you, but does in fact help a lot.

Small world huh? Im moving back to the east bay on wednesday though. Enjoy your stay in Texas. Been here 4.5 years and love it here, but the search for a job is bringing me home.

No I dont But when I get the extra $ I sure will . Its really worth it . Im usually in the 80mph range on freeway. I have a cheap radar In my 05 denali and it has saved me 4 times but the thing goes off for the stupidest things. I have heard so many good things about valentine from tons of people. Must be good

That's it in a nut shell. Save your money for traffic school instead....

Also, If you get stopped for speed with a radar detector (most of the time) you can kiss your chance of a verbal warning goodbye.

maybe in 2000 it was the best.

the passport 9500ix is better than the valentine, and has 90% less false alerts.

http://radartest.com/Escort-9500ix-review.asp

I have one, and it works great. It costs $100 more than the v1, but it also tells you where speed camera's, red light camera's, speed traps, and learns where the false alerts are on your route with the gps so the alerts it does give me are ALWAYS cops.

here's a review of the older model passport 9500i vs the v1 to give you an idea -

Check out rocky mountain radar if you're interested in a jammer. They make the guns cops use iirc, so they have the best antidote for their poison so to speak. The biggest piece of advice for any radar detector is to treat it like another pair of eyes watching for cops and nothing more. If you take a "they can't get me with this thing on" approach, that's when it all goes to hell.
