What exhaust would you guys recommend for my 97 cobra. I want to make it sound like a beast but want to be able to keep it smog legal. Thanks for any input that you can provide me. If you have an exhaust for sale for my car let me know and we can work something out. [patriot]

well, problem is that to be legal you have to use cats, but the cats is what takes away from that deep bass rumble that you seem to be looking for.

Now you may be able to do a 2.5" catted H/X pipe and a very loud muffler like a 1-chamber Flow to compensate.

Personally, I think the best sounding combination is an Off-Road H and Magnaflow catback.

High flow catted H, dynomax 18in race bullets, 2 1/12 in tailpipes, 3.5 in tips. Done

if Smog was not an issue... i'd say MAC long tube headers + MAC Off-road ProChamber + MAC Flowpath catback...

Or Kook's Long tube headers + any off-road h-pipe + SpinTech Super Prostreet mufflers...

But if you want 100% smog legal, you can't change the midpipe... not even a catted x-pipe is California smog legal. if you're sticking with the stock cats for smog... i'd go with one chamber series 10 Flowmasters... or Dynomax Race Bullets...

I wish I could go with the no cat option but I've already been popped once for no cats. I really don't feel like paying another big ticket. Thats the reason for me wanting to go with the legal route this time. [patriot]

how much was that ticket for no cats? Cuz rigt now I have a bassani x pipe with high flow cats but I might pull that down N run my BBK off road H, but I really don't want to get hit with a ticket

I understand how you feel, I work in elk grove so cattless isn't much of an opinion for me but I would definitely recommend cherry bomb extremes they aren't a glass pack but are really loud! Been happy ever since

Yup, that's the same reason I just threw my stock H pipe on yesterday. It actually sounds pretty good. I dont want to get popped for something that may or may not make a whopping 5 hp. [Big Grin]

BTW it smells better too

spintech pro-streets ftw hands down for the catback.

If you really want to bring down the house and be legal, run a catted H-pipe with 3" straight pipes leading to dumps (no mufflers)!

I thought any modification to your exhaust was illegal, even just mufflers. Is this true? [Confused]

Well, there are headers with Carb#s
And catbacks have generally been acceptable (but the law probably states you can't modify).

I don't know of any midpipes however that carry carb#s. Anyone know?

certain headers are CARB legal...

NO MIDPIPES, X OR H, CATTED OR OTHERWISE, ARE CARB LEGAL.

Only midpipes with the factory number of CARB legal cats, (which have to have the factory 2.25in inlet/outlet) in the factory locations, are smog legal... so basically stock midpipes... or custom midpipes assembled with CARB certified OEM replacement cats in the factory locations are legal.

Catback's, and mufflers in general:

CA. I would do Bassani [patriot]

I had full Bassani exhaust with a catted X-pipe and it sounded mean on my 98 cobra. Obviously w/o cats sounds alot better but your O2 sensors will become a pain in ur butt.

Post a sound byte of your system when you get it!

I'll definitely post a sound clip when I get the new exhaust put on! Thanks everyone for your input! Very much appreciated! [patriot]
