I sponsored a youth basketball tournament and dunk contest. Well the first place prize for the dunk contest was a 1k scholarship or a Apple Ipad. My thinking was a kid on his way to college would maybe like the scholly. Or a kid in college would prefer the Ipad.

But it kinda backfired on all of us. Kid that won is a drop out no intention of hittin up college, chose the Ipad and sold it before he got to his car for 200 bucks. Pissed me the F off. Some of these kids just have such twisted values and priorities.

I actually went on and placed the scholarship in the hands of the local JC where I should start receiving essays from applicants for the scholarship. So it isn't a total wash. I am actually more mad at the event coordinators because this was to promote education and they let a drop out enter, whom they knew had no intention of attending school. And I pity the kid that won second because he could use the money and is on his way to college.

Sorry for the rant.

dam i would of been mad to youngsta was trippin
he shouldnt of been allowed to enter should of been students only. you should of bought the ipad from him and gave it to the second winner.

Damn, 200 bucks for an Ipad. That kid needs to learn how much those are worth. Even the ones i was selling were for 300.

Yea thats the thing. The event coordinators allowed him to enter because he is a popular kid on the streetball circuit. There was supposed to be GPA requirements to enter. Me and my company would not have sponsored it under those circumstances. I am real big on helping youngsters do what it is right. And this was not right. Plus it took a opportunity from a deserving kid. The Ipad pissed me off, but the fact that the scholarship was not awarded to the second place kid whom should have won bothers me.

so why cant you have them give the scholorship to the second place kid? I would be getting that shit back especially if they had a pre-requisit for contestants.

I could if they disqualify the first place kid. But the second place kid was already awarded the second place prize. I found out about this a few days after the tourney. I did however tell the kid to apply for the scholarship.

Well cant judge a person for his actions he won the contest. What he does with the earnings is his business. Its like getting a car for cheap/free an turning it for a profit.

Well yea I can kinda. He was not supposed to be in the tournament in the first place. There was a GPA requirement. Among other pre=requisites. I/my company put in a lot of time and resources into this. And too let a known dropout walk off with the main prize to me defeats the purpose of the message I like to send to the youth. So its a 2 edge fail for me. A kid that should have won didn't and the message of the whole thing gets diluted. Its not so much the selling of the Ipad (well it kinda is), I just feel gotten over on by the folks putting on the event because they knew.

Well ya thats why the thread got started. The only ones that need to learn how to read are the people putting on the event and they need to learn how to read their own rules. This post should be titled, OUR EVENT PLANNERS ARE DUMMIES, DIDNT FOLLOW OUR OWN RULES, GAVE AWAY FREE IPAD TO SOMEBODY NOT QUALIFIED TO PARTICIPATE AND NOW WE LOOK LIKE ASSHATS! I bet that kid is using the 200 bucks to buy a half ounce of prop 215 meds and the other 50 for sizzler. -

the event coordinators can read just fine. They just got over on folks. They knew people would come out to see the popular kid despite his academic standing. I learned a lesson if nothing else, if I get involved with something like this again I'll make sure to be on the selection committee or the equivalent.

Looks like you didn't spend enough time and resources on your event staff/hosts to me. I would put blame on kid he did his job he won the event.

Yup, usually when I sponsor events I have more to do with the planning. But I am prepping for a product release so I didnt focus on the behind the scenes stuff and allowed the event hosts to arrange everything. Keep in mind I was only the sponsor, not the coordinator.

Oh and no blame is on the kid. I mean I am pissed at what he did but it is not really his fault. But a college bound kid would have had more respect for the event and prizes (possibly).

So whats the real RANT over then. You say you put alot of time an resources into event then saying you didnt do no behind scenes an just a sponsor.
Then your original rant was a school drop out kid won the event when not aloud in an sold the ipad. then now saying no blame on kid not really his fault.

so Yater is right again. Title should've been "OUR EVENT PLANNERS ARE DUMMIES, DIDNT FOLLOW OUR OWN RULES, GAVE AWAY FREE IPAD TO SOMEBODY NOT QUALIFIED TO PARTICIPATE AND NOW WE LOOK LIKE ASSHATS!"

just .02

Nope my rant is the same. Same kid won that should not have been allowed even in the competition and sold the Ipad. Did I state that changed somewhere? But what I did was support lifted's thread by adding supporting statements. But it is not necessarily the kids fault he participated, though he to was aware of the GPA requirement. And to rehash my original gripe, the youngster has a set of twisted values and morals. And to your point, no the title should not change. As a kid whom chooses an Ipad over a Scholarship that is in that position is still an enigma to me. Thus the question mark at the end.
