I'm a car whore I swear.

To make a long story short the '69 is on its way to Australia to its proud new owner in a week or 2.

I'm starting over again with a '67 fastback I just bought.

This time I'm doing a gt500 clone and I'm doing it right. NO ELEANOR STUFF.

Here's the new beast and all its progress. Black plate equipped '67 C code deluxe fastback, manual brake and steering car with a '69 "true 4V" 351 Windsor, she runs good but of course needs a complete resto. I think this one is going to get paint and body FIRST, then I can get it road worthy and do all the mechanical and interior myself over time.

Nice buy and it should be a great build better then the other two you had in the past IMO

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

I bought it from a friend, he got it at the show last weekend. The only paperwork issues I'm aware of are the tags are outdated and it has back fees. That can be taken care of. Not sure about the details and I really don't care. The gent I bought it from takes care of me and we have a solid business relationship. He deserves the profit and it was a great find for us both.

Nice to see you got another classic. Please don't sell this one for at least a year or two. If your going to do a Shelby, what color you gonna do?

looks like this one will need more then a solid buff and polish job [Razz]

great find btw! very solid project!

Thanks! I had to get something before the money burnt a hole in my pocket...lol. This car was just what the doctor ordered. I do admit, I was looking at 03-04 Cobras, but there's just that "something" about the classics.

<<Yeah this one's going to need paint and a little bodywork.
I'm thinking about a "different" color, something you don't see every day like maybe a dark forest green, possibly Ivy-Gold, a nice candy-red, or maybe even BLACK, we'll see what the body shop and I figure out.

Just ordered the GT500 fiberglass from Stangaholics in Fresno. They gave me a great deal on the upgraded kit with integral headlight and tail light buckets with redesigned attachment points and nose to hood clearance upgrades. Comes with a 30-day fitment guarantee and a 1 year warp and sag warranty. Not bad.

http://stang-aholics.com/ShowItem/108344%201967%20Shelby%20Mustang%20Fastback%20Fiberglass%20Kit.aspx#RelatedItems2Div

Kit is made to order and will be shipped in 9 working days. [Smile] Car is getting paint stripped and sealed here in a few days so I can get started on all the body work and panel fitment.

Looking at paint colors.... Definitely DECIDED AGAINST "Grabber Orange" Here's some pics I edited that were originally red. (makes for easy editing)

Nah, not my thing. :/

..These are the wheels and tires I have for the car already and the '67 they came off (Billet Specialties Fast Lane 20x9 rear and 18x8 front)

no worries, those are getting re-chromed and reused as they are originals and in decent shape. No eleanor stuff on this car.

OK Good, the original bumpers look awesome on these cars.

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

aftermarkets don't fit quite right, I've seen it first-hand, especially in the rear. The corners are too short and don't contour all the way up to the panel extensions, leaving about a 3/8" or more gap, and they tend to stick out too wide as well.

Looks like the nose is going to fit pretty well also. I'm sure it will take some work to get it perfect but I'm ok with that!

Posted by The Mustang Guys (Member # 6759) on :

i know your are going for more of a perfect gt500 but if you want to fool some of these shelby know it alls, the right side of the decklid with the duck tail spoiler is not perfect on the fit. On all the "real" gt500's it actually is raised up a bit, like almost 1/4 inch. this minor defect is from when shelby originally made the parts, they were given wrecked parts from ford. If you look at all untouched 67 shelbys the right side of the deck lid is taller than the right quarter extension. If you are going for a close fake, that would be one minor touch that you can implement to fool some people. Other than not having the numbered apron tag. Your body work is coming along nicely. Keep posting the updates. I love seeing the progress.

^ Great info about the decklid. I've never noticed that nor heard that before. [patriot]

Posted by The Mustang Guys (Member # 6759) on :

it can be also higher on the left side as well, it just depends how the deck lid is adjusted. but typically on the right side. If this issue is corrected on a real shelby, it can affect the value of the car significantly and small things like this if corrected can take away points if your car is being judged for authenticity. but if it is a tribute car its not mandatory. Shelby was always in a rush to get the cars out. So there are so many different issues that if you restore shelbys you will know and continue to learn about, since each car is a little different. everyones intuition is to fix the issues. if you are restoring a real shelby you must learn to leave them alone because it can affect its value significantly. Its alot of fun learning about the issues and flaws these high dollar cars have.

thanks for the info on the deck-lid and others, good stuff.

Yep that is a great color, just don't think I can afford a 3-stage paint job at the moment. [Frown]

As far as my attempts at "authenticity" I'm really not all that worried. Not wanting to make it a concourse replica at all. I look at it like this... If it were a real one I'd want to make sure every concourse item was there, flaws included.

When I make a replica I try to repair the flaws of the originals. I think it makes my "replica" not just a replica, but something a little nicer than the original. [Smile] It's a "replica", it's not like I can really hurt it. [Wink]

Think of it as the Mustang shelby should of made. [Smile] keep posting. What kind of quotes have you been given for a paint job? if you go with that ruby red color, you should do a darker tinted ruby red for the stripes. would look awesome with some ghost stripes.

that's exactly what I was planning if I did that color. As far as paint and body expenses I have quite the hookup since I work in the business. [Wink] I get everything at "jobber" price or below.

Being a former 67 fastback owner, I have just one request on your build... don't spackle paint the engine bay or trunk! This guy at California Dream Machines had a Hellanor (because the majority of Eleanors I've seen look like hell) replica, and the spackle paint job in the engine bay looked like crap, thus killing the car as a whole.

Ghost stripes (lemans) with either a clear-black or a darker shade of green and a black gt500 stripe on bottom

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

Just a recap on the color.

Desert sage metallic (2006+Lexus) It's a medium green with gold metallic. I'd say it's a new spin on the '67 Ivy gold but a few shades darker. Thinking about subtle ghost lemans stripes and the same effect on the GT500 stripes at the lower rockers. The car is also getting 18" wheels in the front and 20's in the rear. ..The wheels weren't my original choice but they were custom made for a '67 Mustang by Billet Specialties and I got a great deal on them from a friend. ..So I figured what the heck I'll give them a shot! They looked GREAT on his '67 convertible. The paint and wheels and tires will be the only real "MOD" to the car. Otherwise it will be a very close replica to the original GT500.

Here's a Honda S2000 painted the Lexus color. This has to be the best shade of green I've ever seen.

Body Shop is doing a great job, I paid them a visit today. The font end is almost all the way on now. The lower scoops are fitted now. They reconstructed the outer roof lines and tied the front and rear together (previously gone from factory lead). They usually vanish completely, sag, ripple or bulge right in front of the upper vents/scoops. I've seen some nice paint jobs where they just left it that way. (YUCK)

I love that green color. What if you did a light siver for the stripes? Maybe the wheels the same silver?

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

It might work but I also don't want it to look like and Andes mint. lol I was thinking either no stripes at all, or maybe the same light gold as are on the '67 Shelby emblems. (very light, almost beige in color) I'm still on the fence though. I'm having a tough time "tying" it all together. I have the emblems, the lower gt500 decals and stripes to contend with. If I mess up the contrast between any of the above I screw it all up!

Posted by WildFire532FB (Member # 1482) on :

I didn't go with any of that, i also deleted the emblems on the sides and only left the MUSTANG on the trunk lip and then put my own Cobra emblem in the grill. If your going to go with that stuff i think black or silver would look good with that color. What size motor is in it by the way?

<<Not bad at all. Still in the early stages though.
It actually looks like the hood needs the edge sanded down near the tip of the fender where it meets the nose. It has a good gap fore and aft but gets too close in that area. I'm sure they'll get it. Good ol fiberglass! lol

Great choice on the color and great project it's comming along nice! Have u thought about doing ur stripes and decals like ghost graphics with pearl so it's only visible in certain angles or also just a slightly darker shade of the green? Just throwing out ideas lol

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

That was the initial plan but I'm having a hard time with the color being really close to dark grey in certain light. (some of the Lexus cars have this effect with this color I've noticed) and I don't want the car looking like eleanor with the darker stripes! lol

It's definitely still an option though (the pearl ghost effect) and might be the only option that will look right. We'll see, I'm still toying with ideas. I don't want anything drastic, nor do I want plain black or plain white stripes.

Definitely going with the Desert Sage Metallic in the picture I posted prior. Looks like I'm probably going with ghost stripes by modding the same color, or no stripes at all. We'll see about the stripes as it gets closer to painting time. Either way I want it to be subtle, nothing too loud.

So I'm getting some performance parts together for the car. The car is already equipped with a 10.7 compression 351w. So far I've acquired a complete 31-spline 9" rear with 3:50 gears and Posi, ceramic coated full-length Hooker headers, 750 Speed Demon carb, and a few other odds and ends.

I just dug up 2 different intake manifolds and I'm having a hard time deciding which one to go with. I'll be running stock heads for now but will be upgrading later, and a moderate to large cam.

I have an Offenhauser 360 (single-plane low rise with middle divider, good from 1800-8000 rpm) and a good-ol Performer RPM. I can also get my hands on a RPM air-gap if I want to.

I like the way both intakes look, but for some reason I'm really leaning toward the Offy 360 for looks and it's "potential" of horsepower is also desirable. It has a really wide rpm band.

Here's some pics I took today to help me decide...

What do you guys think? Any "real-life" feedback from experiences with both intakes would also be appreciated. I've run the RPM manifold on a few different cars, but never the 360.

Posted by 70mach351 (Member # 7528) on :

ive run the performer rpm before. better for the street. if you decide to go blow through the offy will be good. im looking for a low rise single plane manifold like that since the vic jr is so tall.

Posted by Slowback67 (Member # 6348) on :

I'm a big fan of the rpm..... but I like your other one because you don't see them everyday.

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

Definitely don't see the 360 every day.

Offy claims that the 360 has great low-end and high-end, and no flat-spots inbetween.

A friend of mine ran a 360 on his BUILT Windsor for a while, then installed a Victor Jr. He said he missed the streetability and torque of the 360 and he didn't gain anything at high rpm with the Vic. He lost a ton of hood clearance and a ton of low-end torque with the Vic.

So I don't know, maybe Offy's claim is true.
It's definitely a mystery intake, but I can see how it may work with the right combo.

Posted by Slowback67 (Member # 6348) on :

^ I know for a fact your not gonna have any hood clearance problems for your car. I know the 351 is a little taller but I can tell you my 302 has an RPM Air Gap, and I set a 2inch spacer under it and a 4inch air cleaner with a little room to spare. Shelby hood clearance FTW!!!

Damn that's a lot of spacer! lol

I actually did some measurements since I have all 3 intakes available to me at the shop..

The rpm is 3/4" taller than the Offy, and the air gap is 1" taller than the rpm.

For hood clearance I'd say the Offy wins by a long-shot, the only thing I don't know is the performance comparison.

Posted by Slowback67 (Member # 6348) on :

LOL . I'm not running the spacer With the Air Gap..... I just wanted to see how much clearance I'd have under the hood. I do know that 67-68 cougars have no kind of hood clearance with the stock hood.

<<< LOL, I must have misunderstood

So here's some technical info to back up the Offy..

..good tech read for the inclined

I have an old friend named Ed Mosler ...some of you might have heard of the guy. Ed is a well-known cylinder head porter and engine builder. Although he seems to prefer Fords, he designed the infamous Buick 3.8 V6 Grand-National motor back when he engineered for GM. The guy is an absolute legend and has over 40 years in the racing industry.

He built a few motors for me over the years that were badass to say the least, and I definitely trust his opinion. So I decided to ask him about the Offy intake.

Ed loves the Offy intake and gave me some great tech info on it as well as some advice on how it will work with my combo.

The Offy is a very misunderstood and improperly used intake, but when used in the right combination it makes incredible power.

..As Offy says in their tech descriptions, the RPM band depends a lot on what size carb you run. With a larger carb you lack some low-end, but no matter what the intake has great power all across the rpm range. ...much better than any of the Edelbrocks.

The problem with Edelbrock is that they don't make a good "all-around" performance intake. The Performer and Performer RPM make great low and mid-range power, but both crap-out at lower rpm ranges than they advertise,I'd say 5800 for the RPM intake and 5300 for the Performer instead of the advertised 5500 performer and 6500 performer rpm. I've noticed this to be true on some of my motors that I've run those intakes on. The Victor Jr, Victor Sr, and Super Victor all have great upper-end power nd rev to their advertized ranges, but just plain SUCK at anything below 3500-4000 rpm. So most guys that want real power and want to rev high step up to the Victor JR or Victor, and just live with the lack of bottom-end power.

The offy is truly the answer to this and that's what is was designed for. It's a short runner, open/divided plenum design, which is meant to run the engine as two 4-cylinder engines with 2 decent sized open plenums, and no pulse interference between the adjacent cylinders. So instead of having 8 cylinders fighting over the same air/fuel space, you have two separate plenums feeding 4 cylinders each. Very effective design and their throttle response and high rpm capability is very similar to an individual runner/stack setup or a Victor intake, while bottom end torque potential is comparable even to a regular Performer intake.

Ed Mosler states that with my combo I should run a 1" or even a 2" 4-hole spacer ...if I have the hood clearance, to speed up venturi speeds through the carb, adding a generous amount bottom-end torque to compensate for the large carb, without sacrificing higher rpm. In my case I would NOT need an "open" spacer since all that does is add plenum volume and higher rpm potential. The offy doesn't need that extra volume, and it would defeat the purpose the center divider.

So with that intake, my carb and a 1" 4-hole type spacer, the stock '69 heads, and a moderate to large cam, It should be an absolute beast and rev like a set of IR stacks! We'll see how it turns out.

So now I have an Edelbrock Performer RPM for sale if anyone is interested. lol

Yeah the funnel webs are really nice for serious horsepower (600+). The owner of FPS (from your link) has become an acquaintance of mine over the last few years. He built the 418 in my old coupe. Great guy and he knows how to make Ford motors run hard as hell. If I weren't spending so much $ on the cosmetics of this car he would be building me a motor. lol

Another cool thing about the Offy intake is you can take a 4-hole spacer and weld it to the top, and then port the holes outward and into the roof of the plenums, and it will result in a 2-plenum style funnel-web with really fast carb venturi speeds. This is something my porter has done with great results.

It's gonna look real nice when it's done. What are your plans for the engine compartment? Are you going to weld up holes and hide any wires? Are you going to do it the same color as the car or black?

black, factory wiring, all original under hood except motor and most likely an aluminum radiator. [Smile] (My usual) lol Simple, easy, but clean.

Paint is still moving along, ran into some issues with the price of paint ($500 per gallon wholesale) but that's taken care of. They are still doing the final sanding and prep so I'm hoping to see the base-coat and stripes done soon!

Meanwhile I picked up a set of used aluminum heads, Victor Jr copies. ..Same castings as I had on my old 418 stroker. Got a really good deal on them and they have very low miles. Here's some pics. I'm going to do some minor port-work on them and convert them so they have screw-in studs and guide-plates since they are currently set up for pedestals.

Are those heads Pro Comps?
Can't wait to see this thing painted!!!

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

Damn someone played the Pro Comp card!? haha

I know there is a lot of talk about Pro Comp here on the forums, and everywhere else for that matter.

To answer the question...

Short answer is these are better, custom heads, my own brain-children. They are however machined of the same casting that is used by a lot of companies, not just Pro Comp. These castings were revised again as of this year, thank goodness for that. Don't get me wrong they are as Chinese as dental-floss-sunglasses, but not a bad casting at all.

Long answer is these are to Pro Comp as a Super Snake Shelby GT500 is to a v6 plain Jane 2005+ Mustang. Chew on that for a bit...lol

I've had some great experiences as well as some bad experiences with the older castings, but I'm not afraid to run them considering their upgrades, if they are built right. My old 418 Windsor stroker made 610 horsepower with the CNC'd, larger valve version of these, made from the exact SAME CASTING, reliably. It's the machine work, assembly, and parts that will make or break these literally.

Its my understanding that many companies, some small some large, are using these castings now and in the past, and are now having great luck with them. They are a great answer to horsepower per cubic dollar let me tell ya.

Like myself, a number of machine-shops are making them their own, by putting their own parts in them and doing their own quality of machining and porting, etc. I have these castings machined to my specs doing some of the work myself, and so far so good with my customers and colleagues' and our motors.

In my opinion in the near future, a lot of companies are going to be taking over where Pro Comp and some of the others left off, and finally making these a good all-around head. In their defense though, Pro Comp took it in the shorts for the early f-ups with the castings. I'm not endorsing their parts and workmanship, etc, just saying they would have been better off doing their thing with a better hunk of metal. For the price per core there wasn't anything better though. Their still isn't.

Nothing wrong with the name brands by the way, heck if I had the cash I'd go with a set of AFR's. I definitely endorse the lesser price of the new E-Street Edelbrock heads as well, however I can get a set of mine done up with better parts for a few hundred bucks less, and the finished result is a much better head that flows a ton more, hands down.

So excuse my rant and I hope this helps a few folks with their questions regarding PRO COMP heads and the other sister companies and related castings, etc. Most of all I just want to clear my name, I wouldn't waste my money and time on something that is junk. So would I buy a set from Pro Comp? Not unless I wanted to redo them to my specs. I love the castings though and I hope the Chinese keep up the good work and upgrades. I'm looking forward to a better future for these heads.

...Food for thought, I'd rather experiment with an inexpensive Chinese knock-off casting than a name-brand head. I know AFR and Edelbrock has the toe-hold in the industry at the moment, but these heads have been known to outflow them all when done right. I actually appreciate the Chinese for giving us Americans something to play and experiment with at a reasonable price!

If anyone wants to give these a try please let me know, I can get you a good price!

Here's some pics of the CNC'd big boys I had on the 418. 2.08 inch intake valves and 225cc intake runners. I can't remember what the exhaust port cc's were but they were also BIG. Chambers were hogged out to 72 cc's to make room for the large valves, less shrouding for better flow, and provided 10.7 or so compression with the 418.

<<I do too, but I kindof like em all. It's hard to choose which era is the best. The fastbacks all have great lines. I got a reasonable deal on this one and it was a runner/driver. It needed a little tlc mechanically but not much. Cosmetically it was pretty tore back but no major rust and the body was straight. It's also a SAn Jose, CA car. I'm not inclined to state exactly how much I paid for it but it was a fair price, less than 20 grand. Now for as much as I'll have into it when I'm done? A LOT! lol

The port-work on the heads should be done this weekend. ...Just doing a little clean-up and gasket-matching, etc. Then they are off to the machine-shop for a resurface job and some better springs installed. I've already set them on a block and set up the screw-in studs and guide-plates. The valve geometry looks great, everything lines up nice.

I plan on running the big Comp Xtreme Energy cam XE294H, Advertised Duration 294/306, Lift .554/.558, 110 LSA, 250 intake, 256 exhaust @.050. 2,800-7,000 rpm power range.

Things have changed a bit since winter is almost here. I'm going to be focusing more on the mechanical stuff, and less on the paint, for good reason...

The cold weather complicates storage and transporting the car since I live up in the snow. I really don't want to be transporting this car up the hill in the middle of a snow storm! So, I've made a decision and I've told the body shop to take their time, and maybe even put things off for a bit, in anticipation for final paint in late winter/ early spring. That works out better for both of us actually. (don't get me wrong I'd love to see it painted) but I do have plenty of other things I can do on the car in the mean-time.

So it all works out. They can get some other things done on their end since they are so busy, and I can get some things done on my end as well, and I don't have to worry about juggling a car with a fresh paint job in the middle of winter. ...That's just a tragedy waiting to happen.

So, I hope everyone is up for a change of pace?

...On the mechanical forefront, I'm looking at buying my brakes (12" drilled and slotted Wilwoods front and rear) and of course I'll be looking into the engine a bit more, as well as the suspension. Another thing I'm entertaining is a manual trans swap. ...I just installed a "Modern Driveline" hydraulic clutch setup with a T5 swap, in a customer's car and I REALLY LIKE IT. I'd like to do tubular front suspension and a few other trick items under the car as well. We'll see how it goes! [Smile] Still working on the heads, they should be going into the machine shop soon for some final work. [Smile]

I'll still be posting on here putting up pics regularly on everything I'm doing, there just wont be much regarding paint for a little while longer.

<<Sup? Thanks! Wilwoods are in the plans, same kit as Brian has on his race car, but we'll see what happens. I can never tell with me either! lol. I just go with what comes my way. I would love to open track the car when I get the suspension dialed in.

Hope everyone had an enjoyable and safe Thanksgiving!! [Smile]

Looks like I'm moving back down to the city in February so I'm glad I put the paint off for a bit. At least the car car can stay where it's at since it's already down there now. Trying to move the car up here then back down there would be a real pain in the butt!

Let's hope the move doesn't break me too bad financially, otherwise I'm still planning on having the car done in Spring. SO far the time-frame is looking good.

I'm excited!

For now I'm going with reverse-eye leafs in the rear, shelby t-bars, GW subframe connectors, Drake upper and lower o/e style fronts with slightly cut 620 springs. Eventually I'd like to go watts link or 4-link in the rear with coil-over fronts. Ride height will be as low as I can get it with the current wheels and tires. Those will be my only limitation. [Smile] As far as the brakes I'm going with 12" Wilwoods, drilled and slotted on all 4 corners.

Here are the back wheels with rear springs installed, It actually sits about an inch lower than in the pic (since the front is sitting up on the lift) and it will also go down a bit more when the rear seat and upholstery is installed. I have always been a bit sketchy about the wheels but I got a really good deal on them and I do actually think they will look good with the "scheme" of things once the car is all done. I'm going to give them a try and if I don't like em on the finished product I'll try something different. [Smile]

what kind of wheels are they? I'm not really feeling how they look, especially on your car, but I guess i'll have to wait and see how they look when the car is finished up.Props to you for doing something different though.

Those rims will look tight once the cars back together... wow.. those are 20's in the rear?

I think the color scheme is going to be what ties it all together. Yep 20's on the rear. They fit really well.

Here's a pic with all 4 wheels on. Note the front is up about 2" too high, this is with the "so-called" 1-inch drop 620 springs. Cutting a coil out on Monday. Should make it just right. [Smile]

I have to admit that I wasn't feeling them when I just seen a shot of the rears, but once I seen front and rears on I'm deff feeling them and can visualise how good they are going to look once that beauty is put back together...I like them...two thumbs up from me on these rims... [patriot]

The nice thing is wheels unbolt and new ones can be bolted in their place...lol. The rest of the car has always been my priority and I think it's all coming along a lot better than I imagined.

<<I was thinking about a regular gold at one time. This is a gold/green color. If you look back at the pictures of the door jams and and under-trunk area you can see what it looks like in the right light. Once it's cut and polished you will also see the gold more. These pics all came out a little light but you can see the gold effect on one spot around the back of the passenger/rear quarter panel near the masking tape.

I can't wait until it's all together and I can get some pics of it in all the different angles and lighting, etc. [Smile]

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

<<That was definitely the idea six, I'm glad it worked out the way we planned. It was a bit of a challenge getting them right as the green was so dominant. It's the same green paint as the rest of the car with black tint added to the base coat. I want to say they said it was 10:1 green to black. Weird how the black brings out gold and silver in the paint.

Hey Six, I forgot to ad that MANY times I was told I should put white stripes on it, even by the painter, and I stuck to my guns and went with my vision. I've realized not everyone can see things the way we can in our own minds. I'm just glad it turned out right.

Brandon have you figured on a wheel for the fastback yet? I ask because, I saw the chrome wheels that were on the car and was thinking that it was way too much chrome for the "vision" of the car. I'm thinking that a five spoke torq thrust type of wheel, would be the right vision to go with. A subdued center and spokes, just like your stripes, and either a polished or even chromed lip. This way, the wheel combination will work to compliment the paintwork rather than overpower it. Even three piece BBS rims with blacked out or darkened centers would work.

 -

 -

These are 10 spoke 67 gt500's but I think you get the idea

If the center were darker here...

The Cobra in this video is the kind of "look" I'm talking about:
http://www.californiafords.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=046747

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

<<<Thanks for the pics and the video. That Cobra is awesome. I've been considering other options on the wheels. The torque-thrusts are over-done but I do like the dark gray aspect. I think gloss black would look too invisible. Flat black might be an option though, but unless I have a LOT of brakes to offset the black its kindof pointless. I've also considered black-chrome clear/black coating on the wheels I already have. The Halibrand cobra wheel is also over-done. We'll see how these look with the paint, the scoops, and all the trim. I do agree that a darker wheel would look better. Also these are not chrome, they are polished aluminum so they can be painted and dulled-down a bit without too much trouble. For now they will clear the brakes I want to put on the car and will give me something to drive the car on.

So I'm guilty of false advertising here. I just went and looked at the car in person and it looks NOTHING LIKE THE PICTURES. It looks a lot darker, just like the picture of the Honda I posted prior. I LOVE IT! I have to say it looks wimpy in the pictures above...lol. There is no blue or grey in the paint AT ALL but the pics almost look turquoise.

Here's what the color actually looks like and it gets even darker in the shade.

Im sworn to secrecy...lol.

Fiberglass fitment and paint and body like this would probably be near 10-grand retail. I pulled my shop discount on this one and they took care of me on a few things for marketing purposes so it was a bit less. Fiberglass parts and trim pieces, add another 4-5 grand to that. Disassembly and reassembly (done by me in this case) probably adds another grand(+).

I gotta say I fell in love with ur color... Not to many choose green... Been my favorite color since little. Maybe that's why I like it so much. Wow... At first I wasn't really feeling your wheels but after all they look sick .. Some wide tires in the back or widening the rims will really set that thing off.. He'll, you can put turbine rims or ten holes and that fucker will still look badass! Nice work

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

Thanks guys, Eddie it's amazing how color makes the difference when it comes to trim or wheels, etc. My plan for the car was to have the color alone being the focal-point of the car. The color just POPS! Everything else is just an addition to the combo.

I'm speechless, everything is coming along much better than I ever Imagined.

About the rear tires and the wheels, I haven't mentioned that the rear wheels are going to be spaced out quite a bit once I get the 4-wheel disk brakes installed. They are actually just a tad wider than the front, just hard to tell because they are spaced in so far. They are actually rubbing the inner fender-wells a bit...lol.

Picked the car up today, on to the headliner and windows and weatherstripping, and trim. In there somewhere I'll also be swapping out the gas tank and fuel lines and starting her up. THIS IS THE FUN STUFF I LOVE!!!

<<LOL

Tail lamp bulbs, sockets, lenses, and frames are all fitted and installed. That was a pain in the azz and a messy job but it came out great.

I also installed the rear bumper. It fits excellent compared to the aftermarket ones, 67-68 are the worst for fitment. This is an original bumper that has been re-chromed and straightened. Almost a perfect fit! I'm not going to lie, I had to shim things a bit but not too bad.

The Shelby tail panel I'm using is the upgraded panel that has the lamp bezels built-in. That made certain things easier and certain things harder. I had to cut out all the holes for the bulbs and sockets, and drill the 12 lens frame stud holes through fiberglass and through the original steel panel behind it, and then try to gain access to all the nuts on the back. The lens gaskets this stuff came with were nowhere close to fitting so I had to make my own. The lenses also had to be trimmed here and there so they fit properly into the fiberglass provisions. As well as the reflective silver backing I painted on prior, I unexpectedly had to paint a few visible things inside the light bezel orange .YES ORANGE. so it didn't show through the lenses. ...I could write a whole book and that little issue so I'll just leave it alone for now. lol.

The important thing is they came out great. Although there were issues everything fit better than I expected. There's just no easy way to do these tail lights.

GOOD NEWS! I brought the car in the shop today and changed the oil and inspected a few things with a closer eye and found the following...

The engine is for sure a 1969 (C90E) 351W

Pulled out a spark plug and put a borescope/camera inside one of the cylinders and found flat-top pistons and cylinders with light hatch marks on them.

Supposedly this motor was a direct transplant installed years ago from a wrecked '69 Mach1, and it's nice to see I was most-likely told the truth.

The motor probably has low mileage considering the condition of the cylinder walls. I did not see any stamping on the pistons for overbore either. Heck I might have gotten lucky and received a virgin mach1 motor with this car!?

This almost makes me not want to upgrade it with a cam and heads like I planned. I guess I could save the original cast-iron heads and cam and throw them back on some day though. Maybe I could sell the motor running as-is for some good money and build a 408.

Anyhow, it's great to know that what I have under the hood of this thing is something desirable that's in good shape.

Wow that engine cleaned up nice!!! But the 408 idea sounds like it's going to be fun! What transmission are you going with or did I miss that??

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

Thanks! A little paint and a good amount of elbow grease goes a long way! I haven't decided on a transmission yet. Might go with a built-up custom C4 auto or maybe a Toploader 4-speed. My options for a 5-speed are limited due to the amount of torque the 408 produces.

I was thinking of converting my motor over to BOSS 429 heads but in the long run it would cost me too much since i have custom headers made specificly for this car and the heads on it.

hmmmm, My engine builder has a deal on a set of +.060 Ross coated-skirt forged pistons for a 418 (424 actually). I'm all about building what ya got when you're on a budget, so it looks like I'm actually going with a 424 stroker. Since you can go +.100 on a Windsor bore I'm not against the idea of the bigger bore. More cubes is always a good thing, too. [Smile]

This is not a true statement.

These are mass produced blocks. What one guy got away with, the other may not.

Have your machinist, engine shop, engine builder whoever is so properly equipped.......do a SONIC check on the block.

I know, you know this Brandon!

[Smile]

OK "MOST WINDSORS" are good for .100". [Wink] ..Casting shift is not a good thing... lol. He checks everything and I trust his word. Most every Windsor he's done so far has checked out good for .100" over. I'll ask him to give me the sonic #'s on this block just for kicks though. [Wink]

I wish I were rich and had an aftermarket block, I'd go with the big-bore setup.

UPDATE: ...I talked to Troy and he will be sonic-checking for me. Just for you Dan. haha

Thanks man! I got the reverse lights installed and worked on the floors a little more last night. Started on mounting the front headlamps and realized I only have one of the correct buckets. The other one isn't even close to fitting. Back to the drawing board on that and I hope it doesn't tap my wallet too bad. I already cost myself another $50+ by losing one of my GT500 emblems, now this. Its little things like this that add up an nickel and dime ya to death on these cars.

Fun-filled evening.... I attacked the front-end on this thing. Come to find out the required headlamp buckets are the low-beam/outer adjusting buckets off of a '69 Mustang. What I didn't know is that a '69 Mustang doesn't have it's own part # for these buckets. It re-uses a '68 Cougar, Fairlane, or some other part # and the left and right are swapped for use on a Mustang. (true story) This made getting a used set difficult because they say L and R but are on the wrong side of the car. ....DAMNIT FORD!! Ok so anyway I figured it all out and got to work on the headlight install.

The front is starting to take shape! [Smile]

did u strip ur radiator support to paint it?

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

<<Yes, Except for the top ledge as you can see in the pic. I will probably be stripping the whole engine bay as well. I'm not sure yet if I'm going to need to modify the top ledge of the radiator support. It's pretty hammered from a previous owner installing hood pins and reshaping it a bit. Might just reshape it back to stock as-possible, sand it smooth, maybe even fill a few spots, etch-prime it, repaint and/or then might install the factory rubber over the top. The Shelby high-beam brackets always stick up a bit anyway, so without modifying them the rubber strip may be the best way to go. I hate covering things up though. We'll see. Some of the minute details will be attended to later.

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

<<No secret at all. It's a stroked 418 Windsor. Here's all the details and goodies...

425 cubes total with a .060 overbore. Forged Ross pistons with coated skirts, H-beam rods, Forged crank, studded main with girdle. Custom grind retrofit roller .600" lift cam.

With Avenger 225 CNC heads it should produce over 600 horsepower and 575-ish torque.

...Now I just need to find a trans that can handle all that torque! lol

It should have been done a while ago. I ran into a few snags with time versus school, and most of all, money. I have a few things left to do in order to have a "running" engine, some minor assembly and external accessories, etc. (rockers, pushrods, lifters, timing cover, intake, carb, distributor, etc. I still need to detail the underside of the car and the engine bay, install new axle bearings in the 9" rear before I install that, front suspension needs some upgrades, disk brakes, etc, subframe connectors need welded up, transmission, custom driveshaft, then the interior needs done. I still have PLENTY left before she's all done.

lol, not selling any family members at this point.

If anyone knows any potential buyers, please let me know. I might consider a trade for something that's completed, with or without cash included can be negotiated. When I have bills to pay I just can't see having an unfinished car in my garage.

Thanks everyone. It looks like I'm going to be trading the car for a running and restored '70 Mach1 (another one of my favorite cars) with about 550 horsepower under the hood and a few cool mods. I'll probably drive that around for a little while, and maybe do a few low-dollar mods to it, and probably sell that to pay off my education. We'll see. It's a lot easier to sell a running car, it's a more practical car for my needs right now, and its a good trade value-to-value considering my car still needs a lot of money put into it to be a runner. Mine is definitely going to a good home, the guy takes care of his stuff, has the money to finish mine RIGHT, and has a number of muscle cars already. It will be tough to see her go, but it feels worse letting her rot in the garage for 10 more years.

The trade is in progress, we'll see how things go. So far we are both happy with the trade, each of us for our own reasons and that's what matters most. Here's a few teaser pics of the Mach.

Yeah I thought so, same intake I got and they look like the same heads. It only made 550 to the crank or is that 550 to the rear?

Edelbrock Heads and intake?

<<IN reply to the Edelbrock question... Assuming this is the correct "era" of this crate motor, Here's a snipit from "Car Craft" regarding the cylinder heads... "Ford engine-builder Jon Kaase's Super Cobra Jet aluminum heads that offer outstanding 330-cfm intake and 225-cfm exhaust flow numbers from a set of heads that use similar components to the previous Ford 429 Super Cobra Jet head."

Trade fell through, the guy completely flaked. SO she's still up for grabs. I haven't put her on the classifieds here. I wonder if I should.

Why not just get the car to a point where you can drive it and have fun with it? I understand that you want it all done to a certain point but you dont have to have it all done to that level at one time. Its shame to come as a far as you did to sell it at a loss and never even get to drive it. I'm sure others would agree. Can we take a vote? lol [Big Grin]

The trade was for a 1970 Mach 1, not sure where you heard about a 32 ford. Let the rumors fly I guess.

I do need the money, but it's not that simple or that urgent. It will take me another 5-10 years on my new budget to get this one running and driving. Trading for a running ride would at least give me a toy to drive and play with for a while, that I can also sell at a later date to pay my debts in full. For now I can make payments on my student loans and drive another fun toy for a while. The payments leave me with very little extra to put into a project. I just can't afford a project like this one anymore.

Car has already sat for a year, I refuse to let it sit for another 5-10. It's wrong to the car and cruel to me to have to look in my garage and see what I can't afford to finish any longer. The car is better off with someone that can afford to finish it.

Keep the shell and sell the motor, tranny & maybe the reared. That would give you money to make a nice payment on your student loans. ( you could put a cheap 302 in it to drive it.)

You will regret selling it. I've had my car for years and I know what it's like walking out and seeing a car you have little money to spend on...... But I know I will get the money later on to finish it.
Think what a fastback shell is going to cost 10 years from now? Us guys that have owned ours a long time have lucked out on picking these old cars up for a decent price.

That's what I put in my dad's 65 fastback. Except when I bought it, it was $300 cheaper than it is today [Smile]

I had an old school member rebuild the C4 and he did a great job at a great price. He's around your area, kind of. Let me know if you want his contact info.

I really miss the financial industry. I was an advisor with Mass Mutual for a couple years but left to work for the State so I could show steady income to buy a house. We use to get wholesalers coming by the office all the time, most of them use to be advisors then were recruited to be wholesalers. Something tells me you'll have an AC Cobra in there soon.....lol.

That being said I'm back in the game! Just picked up a nice little '67 Coupe. Something more in my price range ..Mostly original car with zero rust and zero bondo. ...Litterally grandma's garaged Mustang. It's a runner, carbureted 5.0 conversion with C4. Black plates, wimbledon white exterior, new seat covers, parchment interior, and A/C. I just wanted a little beater and I got more than I bargained for. Very happy! I plan on making this one a nice driver. [Smile] In the next few days here I plan on doing a data plate decode and verifying her origin. ...See you at Red Robin Ice! The rear fold down was repainted. Then we added new chrome trim and hinges. The seats are all being reupholstered. The entire interior will be basically new/reconditioned.

More like aversion. I just spent another $500+ on the interior. More new parts getting installed soon!

Posted by iceman302 (Member # 7180) on :

This interior is costing me a small fortune! There are lots of missing parts and things that need to be replaced.

We're still waiting on the new trap door. The dash is complete, carpet is in, seats done, door panels installed. The interior is nearly finished... a little stereo wiring and the new Lecarra steering wheel. I have a C4 being built that should be done next week and the 306 crate engine is on the way from Ford Racing. There's a little hold up on the SSBC brakes but hopefully it will all be here in a couple weeks.

Here are a couple quick progress pics that I grabbed today. The interior should be wrapped up later this weekend.

Nice Dave. Surprised to not see you are going with your 427 in it..but I guess with the 306 it will be more of a driver...

Good stuff either way.../

The interior is classic and looks more comfortable than some modern stuff

The 427 is for my '65. That car is being built to handle all that power. The '67 will have largely stock suspension and no chassis modifications.

According to the guy doing my fab work and body work, the car will be ready for paint within the next few months. That said, he hasn't remotely delivered on any of his other timeframes so I highly doubt it.

I'll let you know when you can check it out though. It's just a TCI Mustang II setup.

There are still a few loose ends to tie up with the interior... steering wheel, shifter, glove compartment, and a little bit of wiring. The 306 showed up from Ford Racing last week and I have the C4 waiting for it. Getting close! Maybe a few more weeks...

I hear you but a stock suspension and no chassis modifications make it pointless to go big.

A multi carb setup or shelby intake would look pretty sweet on that engine.

Posted by Slowback67 (Member # 6348) on :

^ Yeah that would look cool. The cheapest route doing that would be the dual carb ediblecock intake and two holleys, Carter's or Eddys.
Those multiple EFI set ups are like min 3 grand. [Cool]

Yeah even when you swang it, it won't overheat.
Sorry to hear you had bad luck with Holley style carbs. I've never like eddy / carter carbs. But eddy does make great intakes. [patriot]

Yeah i wish i had saturdays off cause then i would push hard to get mine done to take it to the 50Reasons car show. If it really rains hard sometime before then, then theres a huge possiblity of getting saturdays off but i think this is going to be a dry fall.

On another note, I did cause an accident today. Sort of.

I was approaching a light with the car on the trailer. An elderly couple in a RAV4 was to my right and there was a 1-800-JUNK truck right behind them. Both the elderly couple and the truck driver appeared to be checking out the car. The lady driving the RAV4 looked up right when the light turned yellow and panicked. She slammed on her brakes to stop for the light and the truck driver smashed into them. The rear window exploded and it caved in the back.

Agreed. They were on the car when I bought it. And I don't hate them enough to deal with selling them. Plus, the rims need to be big to clear the brakes.
