Haviing a real hard time deciding what to do with work. I work at a job now in the solar industry that pays real well. Well enough so that I can afford my bills and have money left over to fix up the car and go out and have fun. Badf side is I have been here 2 years and am still a temp employee. I have no vacation, no benefits, graveyard shift, no holiday pay, work all halidays, drive 45 miles a day round trip for work, work 12 1/2 hours a day wednesday through sunday, and have no weekends off. Like I say the pay is good but it is affecting my personal life so much and I dont know if they will ever make me a company employee.

The other day I got a job off from a job only 5 miles from my house. It is with a company that has been around 80 years. It pays alot less money but after 30 days if you make it you get at least a $4 a hour raise and you are union (though still less pay than my current job). It is enough money to live on, it is Monday to Friday, medical, dental, holiday off, vacation, union pension, chances to move up, and money is enough to live on just wont be able to have as much fun fixing up the cars and going on trips for maybe 1 year or 2. But it does seem like a good job just waiting on my background and drug test results which I should pass both.

I just want to know what would you do. Keep the job that works you like a dog in a solar company that may or may not go big. And that also pays real well. Or do I just take the lower paying job for now. Finally have some vacation time, have to not pay $350 a month for medical like I do now, and actually have time for friends and family because there is a good chance of me getting on day shifts.

I am totally confused.

I now would take the job that is closer and take the pay cut. I would never let a job dictate my life ever again. A comfortable, happy lifestyle is worth more than a job could ever pay me.

Work should not run your life. You have to have time for family, friends and fun or life sucks. I'm a union employer, the benefits you'll be getting are worth $20-30K a year, so you have to take that into account. Less commute is less stress. Sounds like you will have less pocket money but your quality of life will be better. It's a no brainer IMO.

Yea take the other job if you save on benifits and commute and you get paid vacations and and day shifts and you get the weekends off you work to live not live to work , but ultimately you have to make the decision your self

less commute = happier YOU! Trust me, I commuted for about 10 years from Hayward to the south bay and it didnt seem too bad at the time...but now that I work less than 2 miles away, i am SO MUCH HAPPIER! The time you save and stress-free drive to work is worth the pay cut in my opinion...but in your case, getting benefits is definitely worth teh pay cut...insurance is expensive and getting a full time position and perks is always a plus [patriot]

dont know what sort of position u hold at that company but maybe u can use that experience as a springboard into finding a better position within solar, which is strong and growing industry as mostknow. if u like what ur doing and can see urself moving up in that field id say give it a chance and look for new opportunities...just cuz this one ur working for sucks in terms of benefits doesnt mean there are companies offering better perks. have u spoken to your boss about your concerns of being a temp and what your career outlook is?
once u take that pay cut you'll be lowering your standard but at that same time, not having free time sucks as well.

Yeah they said they are not going to be making us regular employees anytime soon. And it is a warehouse job with pretty much no chance to really move up.

Yeah I am at Solyndra, or I mean was. I listened to all the advice from people and I gave may notice today and Fridya is my last day. Did some math and with the less wear and tear on the car, less gas, and with the chances for overtime at this new job it looks like it wont be too much less. At least I will get a raise now every year unlike where I am now 2 years no raise.

You all are right life is too short to spend on working all the time. It will be nice to be able to go to the car shows again and to family events.

Thanks all

Didnt read nothing else. But this statement sums things up. You are doing yourself a huge dis-service by workin under a low ceiling situation. On that alone I would seek another gig. Money and hours aside. If you cannot advance yourself move on.

I wouldn't just look at the "salery". I would look at the "total compensation package".

For example, calculate how much you will save by not having to pay for benefits yourself. Also, if you get two weeks paid vacation that is like getting an extra paycheck a year (and you won't have to take unpaid vacation).

Good luck [patriot]

+1 It will add years on your life. I was in the same boat as SydeWaySix. I commuted all over the bay for 10 years then my most recent job for the last 5 + years was only 5 miles away from my house. I never even had to hit the freeway. But now being unemployed my commute is awesome!! lol in the last 3 months I havent even put 100 miles on the Cobra.

Take job number 2 you might get paid less but you will save hella money on gas, you will save hella money not habin to pay for your own benefits and trust me benefits are the shit!! Paid 150 to kaiser for emergency surgery when my apendix was about to explode. That was for the E.R visit, surgery, and all medicines. Benefits are very important.
