That thing is fuckin ill man!!

Hell yeah. One of my favorite cars!!

My neighbor had a 68 deluxe fastback with a 428 4 speed in it in that same color when I was growing up. He let it just sit outside in his side yard. It is still sitting there. He is/was a navy seal.

NICE!!! I've always loved 69-70 fastbacks...the bodystyle screams "MUSCLE"! [worship] ALl that thing needs is a nice paint job and some nice Shelby or Mach 1 wheels and you're set [Whoo Whooooo!]

Very nice find, lucky you! The baddest mustang body style hands down and my all time favorite... [worship]

Looks a lil constipated all stock with the fading 40+ year old paint.... Add some mild (Or wild) mods with your resto and I'm sure you'll have it "shittin" all over Cafords soon enough! [burnout]

welcome to the club, my fastback was basically the same model except a 302 4 speed car

Thanks for all the inspiration everyone. After my heavily modded '67 I must admit I'm having a tough time with this one. She's a rare bird and I don't want to ruin her value by hopping her up too much.

There are sooo many things I could do to make this one a racer but I think she's just going to be a cruiser. I might just make her handle a little better and do some minor upgrades, maybe a cam and heads on the stock block and some good sounding exhaust.

This one has beauty queen written all over it. lol. The car is in great shape except for the usual restoration necessities. The body is straight as an arrow, everything works, no major rust, and the motor runs really well.

CHANGING AIR CLEANER BADGE

Here's the new air cleaner sticker. I like this better. It's definitely more what I had in mind.
I think without it the engine bay looks too boring, just needed a little color.

Looking good. You don't need to repaint it now.

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

It's not perfect, still a few areas that I'll never get back or that I went a little too far but I'm learning here. lol It looks a LOT better though and I don't have to paint it; right away at least.

I used 0000 steel wool (wet) to take off the INSANE amounts of oxidation and discolored metal/flake in the topcoat. 2000 paper (wet) then 3M rubbing compoound with the combo of an orbital buffer as well as a regular buffer. I'll be finishing off with a clear-coat type polish using the orbital.

Thanks! I haven't done much to the paint recently, it's still half-way done. I did however get a chance to do the exhaust (at least the back half) with all mandrel 2.5" with 3"chrome tips. I still need to ditch the stock manifolds and install headers and an X or H pipe. Time is not of essence these days with school and other cars at the shop. I wish I could clone myself and get this thing done faster!

<<<Yes the AC works. Before pics are of oxidized paint, page 1 I believe. No pics of it sanded, I didn't get a chance to take a break and take a pic while I was sanding.

So it's almost done! A few minor touch-up areas and some wax and that's it.

crazy thing... Mustang started running crappy the other day.

It was acting like maybe the power valve in the carb (Holley 600) was going out. Every time I tried to give it gas under power it acted like a rev-limiter, like too much or not enough fuel was present.

Everything except the carb (mystery item and kinda drab looking) is less than a month old including plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and ignition coil, so I decided to kit the carb. I already had a freshen-up kit on the shelf so thought it wouldn't hurt.

Problem was still there!

So I moved on to the ignition and realized the pertronix module did not match the coil I had (pertronix I and pertronix II are not compatible) so I replaced the pertronix module to match the better P2 coil.

Still, didn't fix the problem! Actually made it worse! SO at that point I knew I had a secondary ignition leak somewhere so I swapped out the cap and rotor for a known/good one. That didn't fix it either. I finally looked at the wires and plugs a little closer. The plugs at first glance looked PERFECT.

Sure enough, with a closer look a few of my month-old spark plugs had trails on them and were arcing to ground along the electrodes instead of jumping the gap. VERY MINOR and hard to see traces were found on 4 of them. I got a bad batch I guess. NEVER had a problem like this with an autolite. So I replaced the plugs and all is well.

She runs great again. ...In all my years I've never had one of my own cars suffer from spark plug arcing and I've always used autolites. I've had customers' do it with old/used champion and other brand plugs but never mine. Guess my number was up! lol

Thanks for all the reinforcement guys! It makes me appreciate it that much more. It's been a lot of work for sure. I can't wait to get all the Mach-1 stuff on it (stripes, etc). I think it will make it that much more of an awesome car.

On Friday I got the B&M stall converter installed, serviced the transmission, and adjusted the bands, as well as replaced the trans mount with a polyurethane replacement. Coming soon will be 3.50 gears and 31 spline axles.

Had a little mishap the other day. The alternator and/or regulator shorted out, burnt ALL the wires, all the way through, and almost caught fire.

Got it all fixed tonight, replaced both components and fixed all the wiring. I used to have a battery draw and that is all gone now too. (figures) So it's all better now. I'm really glad she didn't catch fire!

it turned out great bro, its a goal to make your car the hottest around, but nobody wants it to be that hot. lmao, jk. glad it didnt catch on fire man.

<<<Yeah serious.
Got some more work done on the car today... Replaced strut rod bushings and aligned the front-end. Also adjusted the modulator valve on the trans to raise shift points.

Alignment specs came out pretty nice...
Caster is 2.6 degrees on both sides, camber is -.5 on right and -.3 on left, toe is in 1/8". Drives a lot better.

Agree with you 100% that car is money in the bank! Nice car man curious to see what it looks like with some fresh paint! What color you gonna go with?

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

Probably going to stick with the original color, same as it is now, winter blue metallic. I will probably be giving it the Mach1 treatment for now though, just decals, spoilers, etc. I don't have a ton of cash right now to do paint, interior, and everything else. So for now I'm just sticking with the essentials and a few mechanical upgrades. The paint is going to have to wait for a while.

Ordered a Comp Cams "Thumpr" camshaft, should be here tomorrow. [Smile]

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

Cam is installed, everything looks good, valve springs still have quite a bit more to go before coil-bind.

I realized quickly that this motor has the non-adjustable rocker studs (common for '69). Those are the non-adjustable 3/8 studs with iddy-biddy 5/16 threads that you just torque all the way down and hope it works. Lame on Ford's part.

I converted them to into adjustables. This is done easily with by using the factory nut for the adjustment, then adding a grade 8 prevailing-torque lock-nut on the top. This allows you to set the pushrod into the lifter bore "just enough", (1/2 turn) instead of the factory "near-bottom" or "wherever" it lands situation. Luckily this cam uses the factory length pushrod so that makes things easy.

I'm also adding a performer RPM air gap intake and 670 street avenger carb.

Things are coming together well, should have her going in a few days.

Was there any problems with your carb after the thumper cam? I've heard a few people say they had a little trouble tuning after installing one.

I want to pick up a retro fit thumper, but for cam and lifters it's over 700. ( I also need to buy better heads before I do another cam swap.)

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

no problems at all, vacuum is still great, power brakes still work great. Roller/retrofit should be even better but you never know. Personally I'd just stick to the standard setup if its an experiment. [Smile]

Nice 70, too bad it says "Spectre" on the windshield. I have to say I would probably turn down an endorsement from them. Their parts are just poor.

It's the small Thumpr cam with .490 lift, 107 LSA and 290+ duration. I would think the small one with 1.7's would be a great street camshaft. Similar to the Comp Magnum 292H with a little better sound and probably better bottom-end torque. When I do put heads on my car (Probably Cast Iron World Products Windsor Sr's) I was thinking about putting a 1.7 rocker and leaving this cam. We'll see.

By the way I've lost ZERO noticeable bottom-end torque with this cam, however I must say I do have a 2400 stall converter. Might have lost a bit below that but probably not much.

Thanks! Yep I can't wait to get the Mach stripes on this thing [Smile]

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

So I think I've decided to go with more of a 1970 Mach 1 approach. I like the hood stripes better on the '70 and the black below the doors is cool also. Most of all its a lot cheaper to do, just mask and paint those areas accordingly. I also like the blacked-out headlamp buckets.

I think I'm going to give it a shot! No Mach1 badges though, I think I'm just going to go with the paint scheme, not the label.

To make a long story short the '69 is on its way to Australia to its proud new owner in a week or 2, and I'm starting over again with a '67 fastback I just bought.

This time I'm doing a gt500 clone and I'm doing it right. NO ELEANOR STUFF.

Here's the new beast. Black plate equipped '67 C code deluxe fastback, manual brake and steering car with a '69 "true 4V" 351 Windsor, she runs good but of course needs a complete resto. I think this one is going to get paint and body FIRST, then I can get it road worthy and do all the mechanical and interior myself over time.

I'll be starting a new forum thread on this one.

....ah you guys must be confusing me with Brian from Sac Mustang. I bought it from him at a slightly inflated rate the very next day...lol. I still got a good deal on it though. He is also the one that sold me the '69 and then hooked me up with the buyers for the '69.

Now that I think about it this is all his fault. He has had a hand in every sale and purchase I've made since my '65 coupe 2 years ago. What a great connection he has been. I also like the guy, he's a business man for sure but a joy to work with.

thanks! Yep it seems like it so far. I haven't started tearing into it just yet so I haven't figured out just how much she's going to need right of the bat. I got a set of Billet Specialties wheels for her and reverse eye springs for the rear, and a few other little items I'm scraping together.
