i have got a wild hair up my ass and have decided to MAYBE sell my turbo 408w motor are g force trans to buy a 03 04 cobra motor and t56. sure a fuel injected 408w with a turbonetics 76mm ball bearing turbo will be pretty nasty. 9 sec street car. but im looking to have something fast but also something i can jump in anytime and just drive anywhere anytime for as long as i want and not think twice.im thinking stock cobra motor and trans in my 2900 lb car which is 4 linked and mustang 2 front end, will be a blast to drive.i think with just some long tubes and cold air it will be a high 11 sec car. i have a crap load of money already into my combo and will lose a lot if i sell. i can handle fab work no problem and wiring will take a little bit. i have put efi im my 65. give me some thoughts on what i should do.hearing the whine from the blower and all that instant torque sounds good. hearing that turbo spool up and and feeling easy 600 rwhp sounds good too. HELP!!!

Do you want a 9 sec car...or a 11 sec car? It's want it really comes down to. And as far as drivability, it's all in the build. I'd have no issues driving my 10-sec Cobra anywhere...but the mpg would be a different story.

If you're that deep into it that you will lose $$$, go with the original plan. Right now, and for the foreseen future, you won't sell a combo like that and come close to buying a 03-04 drivetrain.

yea it is all in the build but im also looking for the "wow" factor. plus throw a kenne bell on it and hold the F on. theirs a few low mile drivetrians for 6500 right now. i don't know...plus the capabilities of the power limits of a cobra motor compared to a 351w is a nice advantage also. maybe i just need to buy a 03 cobra for a second fun car.

The "cool" factor of having a mod motor in your oldschool will definitely be there. 600rwhp in a Cobra Motor shouldn't be a problem at all with a KB or Whipple.

However, adapting that motor will be a lot more work than a pushrod motor. You will need to find a k-member for starters. Then you will have to worry about clearing the shock towers. Don't forget headers. Also, you will need to figure out how to get past the PATs system.

I'm sure there is a lot more that I am leaving out.

car is already equipped with a mustang 2 front end. i can put anything in there. make my own motor and tans mount.get a harness from ford fuel injection which they can get rid of the pats, and all the little stupid shit. i have no problem tackling the project just scared to let go of my pride and joy 408w. but im young and dumb and have plenty of years to make mistakes and fix them. fuck it! if i get a deal im goin for it.

sucks i "couldn't sell my combo for 03 cobra drivetrain".....heh bullllllshit!! fully built aluminum teskid motor with treated cobra crank,eagle H beam rods, coated probe forged pistons with hellfire rings arp every thing with a canton pan and windage tray, rated to 1300fwhp with a 2 year warranty.....not to mention fully ported c heads with blower cams and a stage 3 ported eaton and complete harness ecu accessorys. this is the start of the build page.  -  -  -  -  -  -

One thing ive learned is if you start something finish it even if your ideas change cause then your stuck with the idea of never knowing how it turned out. Alot times i get frusterated or even bored in the middle of a project and want to chang everything before its done. Just finish it i bet youll love it. Then if you still waqnt to do something else sell it (complete) youll get more money for it and start fresh! Good luck

yeah i kinda wish i got the turbo 408 up and running but i have always wanted to do this just i think it was the right time before the car got to outa control on HP and would have to upgrade the block,tranny,standalone efi,fuel,system,probably the axles and full cage the car for the kinda power you can make with that combo. i want a mid to low 11 second car that drives like stock.

03 Cobra heads make more power than ported 99-01 Cobra heads. I'd swap out the 01's for some 03's.

I'd also do the following to the heads:
Have bronze guides installed.
Use one-piece high-flow valves.
Install Comp Cams valvesprings & retainers.
Throw in a set of Ford GT Supercar cams.

I've personally seen 60RWHP & 80RWTQ gains from swapping from a set of ported 01 Cobra heads with Re-ground blower cams to a set of STOCK 03 Cobra heads & cams in a Vortech S-Trim setup.

The upgrades to the 03Cobra heads would be worth another 30-40+hp.....without portwork, and would hold 25+psi boost (assuming there's not a shit-ton of back pressure in the turbo manifold) Un-ported 03 Cobra heads have gone 8's.

i would need to change the front timing cover to a 03 cobra one, which are like 450 bucks and up.i would have to get a 03 cobra harness and ecu.. i have a 99 cobra and ecu,still need the alt.and mount, a bunch of idlers pullies,03 cobra rails and all the little misc little sensors and crap.i have already the blower,the bottom intake(no intercooler),the front heat exchanger and the big pully assembly that goes across the front of the 03cobra motor.im sure there is more i need but its alot of money to run a damn eaton when i can just turbo it and keep all the 99 cobra crap.if anybody wants to donate to the make a eaton work foundation feel free.

yea thats crazy that the eaton conversion pops up. but all that money plus still have to buy timing cover,harness,ecu all the little sensors....for a eaton is not worth it.already have a turbo lined up.and no the windsor would not be running since dont have any money!!! diapers are getting expensive! jayl i have been thinking about that aod of yours...... i dont think i can pull myself to go back to auto though. even my girl was like "i dont consider it a muscle car if its not a stick" that was kinda a deal breaker. i cant have my girl thinking my car is a wimp.

not sure yet on the bov and wg. im gonna call around and get a general ideal whats best for my application.im gonna set the motor back more into the firewall.maybe cut the firewall out and recess it a little bit to get more room up front.i have a line on a hot side kit for a cobra right now but no sure if it will work.i got more room than a cobra engine bay wise. might just fab it myself. i dont know where im gonna stuff an I/C either. maybe a air to water under the dash. i gave myself a deadline of 2 months... some more updates. got a fully built art car aode, sfi bell with a trans brake [burnout] 9.5 3200 converter (probably will tighten it up) and also a and m shifter.plans are to drop the gears down to 3:55 or 3:27's so with the electric overdrive it should cruise pretty good on the street. now i have the trans i can start making motor and trans mounts.  -  -  -  -

not too much progress yet. a few more things taken out. mostly interior stuff. been workin on the dash but i just dont fit under that bitch haha.

but about the mounts, it fuckin looks so close with that kmember and mounts , i figure its worth it just to have some made so I dont have to go through the hassle. The Skinny Kid stuff is awesome, but i just wanna bolt this shit in and drive it asap. im sure you know what i mean!

thanks. as for the money part i do worry. im 23 have a wife and a 4 month old i have to work my ass off 10 hour days 6 days a week as a laborer/carpenter plus go to school after work for emt/firefighter to support my family,pay bills, and fund my project. it just bothers me when people say "it must be nice". i earn everything i have. thanks again for the compliments.

its been awhile since i updated this alot has changed... i was full steam on the turbo plan and even upgraded to a precision 78gts turbo and was looking to go mid 8's. then i realized i dont want a race car... i want a street car thats fun on the street. almost sold the car had a guy with money in hand and a trailer waiting. but i decided i couldnt sell it with out finishing it and driving it. i havent driven it since new years drags last year when it had the 408w/t5. so i got rid of all the turbo stuff and i am now in the process of a eaton swap. specs are steg. stage 5 eaton with torque plate,aeromotive rails to run my existing return system, ported lower intake,complete metco 4lb lower kit,metco 2.93 upper, afco heat exchanger,60# injectors,ported plenum and t-body,jlt cai,

thanks! i have high hopes. BADASS03SVT on modular fords just went 9.94 at 135 with a completely stock long block with a steg. stage 3 eaton boost only!!! backed by a t400 transbraked in a 03 cobra! i got at least 500lbs less than him with a bit more mods and a transbraked aod im hoping just for high tens but this has me wondering!

Good for you man, after all that work that you put into it, then seeing you had put it up for sale just wasn't right!

I have no idea what a pullied/ported Eaton makes at the wheels, but mid-low 10's in a clean old-school Mustang sounds better than 99% of everything else on the road.

Thanks for the comments. Hopefully taxes will bring a large twin screw to the picture. It has a factory heat exchanger on it you can see it in front of the rad.I bought the cat from texas so they are really fat over there no wonder I needed to do so much sheet metal in the floors.

summit brand rad. Worked fine for the 408. Its not the best looking but this isn't a show car by any means. Just a street and track brawler. Front tires are 275/40/17 on a 9 1/2" rim

if you ever go back to a turbo i think modularmustangracing makes some nice manifolds for single turbo i think there like $400 pretty sure its a t4 flange they'd prolly fit in that chassis

Stock manifolds barley fit. I don't know if even custom longtubes will work.as far as hooking that's what the 335 hoosiers are for.

Ask as many questions as you want. I traded my 408 5 speed to "jayl" on here. The motor is ran by a fast xfi xim management system.

Wildfire. Thanks for the recommendation. I will give em a call.I hate have stock manifolds on a healthy motor.I got some hedmans I might cut up and practice myself.

On sat when it goes to exhaust I will take some pics.its been on the garage for a year so its hard to get good pics. I can't roll it out since my drivway is at a 80* fucking angle

Yeah i got custom long tubes made, with a custom exhaust. It cost me 2800.

How much power are you planning on making? It's fairly easy to get over 600 RWHP through the stock exhaust manifolds on those motors. [Smile]

i have heard that a lot especially when i was going turbo i was gonna use the stock manifolds flipped and people were saying thats the best way and there efficient to a decent hp. well i would like to make as much power as possible on 91 pump and i am researching maybe having a switchable tune between e85 and 91 and of course race fuel. once i huck the eaton.

The driverside header i can pull off as a one whole piece the passenger side comes off in 2 pieces.

how did you fire it up without headers? or did you do it after you got it back?
How did it run? Had a set back today on my car, we couldn't get the turn signals and brake lights to work. While my dad was going over the diagrams i was playing with all the wires involved and found the problem. Everything works now that we can check, besides the starter, we haven't checked to see if it will turn the motor over. Trying to install the dash trim so i can install my center console and my gauges.

wildfire- exhaust is finished up.i am running stock 03 cobra manifolds for now. i will get some long tubes fabbed up when i put a big twin screw on it.exhaust consists of full 3" with magnaflow xpipe and dynomax race bullets. still haven't decided how i wanna run tips so its stopped under the rear housing like a 03 04 cobra.car runs like shit haha. i posted a video a couple posts up.just wanted to make sure i had good oil pressure. its running way rich and i dont wanna wash down the rings. so a tune is my next plan.i will have to come check out your fb sometime. i built those rest stops up in gold run and i will be doing to warranty stuff in the next week or so. we should meet up..

That is one bad ride. Looks killer with the big tires all around. The stance and the wheels and tires really make that car. I am around early Mustangs constantly and they never have enough tire under them to get the look I would want for one of my own. Yours has the combo though! Bad ass and good luck on finishing it up.

I sold the roller to a guy in Texas. Put the motor and trans into the yellow 67 coupe. Then sold the whole car. Which I believe is in the Fresno area.
