Bought this car on my 25th bday (2 years ago)
It came with a C4 and a 8 inch rearend and all the interior parts but no motor.
I talked the guy down BELOW what he bought it for a month earlier [burnout]
 -
Its a 1968 Mustang Fastback and my plans for it are a complete restoration but modified or restomodding it.
 -
 -
I found some dead mice in it when i started stripping her down so i know its been sitting awhile. The guy i bought it off of said he found it in a barn and bought it off the original owner who was trying to restore it.
I stripped it down for mineral blasting
 -
When i got it back i was really shocked, it had a lot more rust outs than i originally thought.
 -
 -
I had to put new floorboards in and weld up some rust outs inside and outside of the body. I started to work on the body and i knew i wanted it to look like a GT500 with the scopes on the sides.

 -
I made this hood out of the stock hood but unfortantly i am unable to use it (more on that later)
 -
The body work was half done in this next picture.
 -
At this point i knew i wanted a big block and i wanted to get a 427, i also was going to put a Heidts frontend in it. Well as any car build goes things changed and instead of a Heidts frontend i invested in a Martz frontend and a Martz rearend suspension setup.
 -
 -
I also got aluminum inner panels and an aluminum radiator
 -
Rear setup
 -
315s in the rear
 -

I cut the floorboards to install subframe connectors
 -
 -
After finding out 427s with their 450hp were 12,000 dollars i found out about the Ford crate motor 514ci. When i tried getting one of these Ford told me they only make these motors seasonally and i'd have to wait a whole year for their next batch. I found an engine company that said they could build me a 514 so i ordered one. It turned out they couldn't get a 514 crank so they upgraded the crank for free to a 532.
I got Edlebrock heads and an intake for it and i am running the Ford 514ci cam which is a .588 intake and .614 exhaust. The engine shop believed with the combo i wanted to put on it would produce around 600HP N/A
I am going to run a Holley 1050 carb on it which brings me back to my Hood.
 - With the engine in and no carb the top part of the intake is even with the bottom part of the hood.
 -
We measured it and i will need about a 6 inch cowl hood to clear the carb and airfilter.

I got some custom long tube headers made for a 460 in a 68 Fastback which i will need to redo the front pipe for the engine mount location
 -
2/14/08 we painted the interior again
 -
2/15/08 we masked off the entire body and will be spraying primer on it tomorrow.
 -
Then if everything comes out how i believe it will after the block sanding of the entire body we will paint the exterior Laser Red found on 98 Cobras like my dad's Cobra.
 -
I will post updates as i move along in my build of my 1968 Mustang 532 Fastback [Smile]

I thought you were going to paint it green?

I'd suggest second guessing the laser red, I mean it's an awesome color, I know because my 97 is laser red, but it fades really weird, like the trunk lid, license plate backing, and taillight shield things on my car are all different shades of red in bright sunlight, and the paint on my car is in really good shape!

I was going to paint it the same color as my 95 but my dad's Mustang is a 98 and my Fastback is a 68, 40 years difference so i thought it would be cool to have it the same color.
My dad's Cobra hasn't faded at all so i don't know why yours is.
I am going with 4 coats of base
4 coats of color
4 coats of clear.

maybe your dads is always garaged? I don't think the previous owners of mine kept it garaged...

I mean don't get me wrong, the paint looks awesome from 20 feet away, but the rear just looks funny with all the different shades in sunlight.

laser red is my favorite stang color...whenver i had body work done on my 95, shops would instantly warn me of how hard that color is to match and how expensive it is...E9

Laser Red is a SIK color
I think my Fastback is going to look BADASS in Laser red

It should be painted very very soon! [Eek!]

I have to agree... The strawberry/laser red is a gorgeous color. No OEM color stands out quite like it.

I miss my 92LX and I can't imagine any other 10+ year old 125K mile color to looks quite that good. It hides age well.

Final Primer went on today (I hope) Seems like whenever i block sand it i always find a small imperfection and i sand down to metal to fix it [Frown]
I can't paint it until i have my cowl hood anyway.
Should be getting that about a week or so before i go back to work fulltime.

The doors and fenders have been wetsanded and are ready for paint. Going to reprimer the car in some spots today because i sanded down to metal, found a couple of issues as well that i couldn't see without the primer on it so hopefully i fixed them.
Still waiting on my 6 inch cowl hood. Once i get that we're going to put the car together and start painting it Laser Red. i would like to get 4 coats of base, 4 coats of color and 4 coats of clear. Going to buy a gallon of each and hopefully it does that.
I'll post pics of the stuff tonight if i remember to take pictures haha

Are you going to remove the drop moldings before paint?

I actually can't remember, are the drip moldings even removable?

Subframes on?

I have everything you can take off with a tool without damaging the vehicle off.

Subframes are in, check the last couple of pictures, the one of the interior painted black you can see the subframes coming through the floor.
We might start laying paint tomorrow or wednesday. (Door jams, trunk jam, firewall)

I'm not sure about the '67s but the '65/'66 you can remove them but you have to actually pull up the roof panel.

be careful too much paint/clear can make it brittle. I know when i sell everyone paint i have to let them know that dupont recommends 2-3 coats of value shade(base as u called it)2-3 coats of base coat(paint) but it usually takes 3 to achieve the color with out voids, blotches and tiger stripping. and 2 coats of clear, 3 if u are going to do a lot of buffing, but that third coat has to come after the 2 coats have thoroughly dried and all the solvents have lifted out of it.

how is the drip rails on the fastback...?? i have a 68 mustang and mine seem to have a small gap and is kinda ruff in some spots up against the roof. just wondering if you know of anything to fix that other than bondo??? kinda hard to get in there and sand.

i put weather seal and bondo in them and sanded them smooth.

So my hood was supposed to be here this week and i called and they can't find my hood and don't know if they sent it [Mad] IF i have to wait another 6 weeks for a hood then i have to wait 6 weeks to paint it

get the block sanding sand paper so it sticks to your fingers or get some mixing sticks for paint and use them to sand with by putting the sand paper on them. Fingers worked good for me.

It was going to be, need to fix the rear of the car, its not as smooth as i want it. Can't really paint it without a hood. I can paint the jams and stuff and then put the car together and get ready for painting the entire car but i don't want to wait too long after painting the jams.

Posted by 532Fastback (Member # 1482) on :

Started masking off the door jams and firewall. All we need is a warmer day and we'll lay some color. [Eek!] Hood should be here on thursday.
Found a little glitch with my fender so we're going to have to primer a section of it again but after that it should be good. I am going to look over the fenders more closely tomorrow.

Posted by 532Fastback (Member # 1482) on :

Getting the hood today. Going to primer it and then block sand it tomorrow. Hopefully its in good shape. Friday we're painting the door jams. Then we'll wait until I have 2 days off from work and paint the rest of the car.

Hood needs work but i should have it ready for paint by next week. Going to work on it all day tomorrow. We could paint tomorrow, the door jams and everything is ready but i've decided to paint those on friday. I'll post pictures of that when its done

Posted by 532Fastback (Member # 1482) on :

Going out and painting the door jams in a few, i'll post pictures tonight. Once the car is fully painted i won't update this post unless i do some major work to the car but once its painted we're going to focus on my brothers, broke down Honda, put the XFI and long tubes on my dad's 98 Cobra, find out what the weird noise that my moms 98 Cobra is making in the rear suspension and then put all in brake lines in my Jeep.

Posted by Rookie07gt (Member # 7536) on :

SICK!!! goodluck on your project. That laser red's going to be sharp on your fastback!

Posted by 532Fastback (Member # 1482) on :

So We're done. We're following v-town coupe advice and painting the last coat of clear on the paint tomorrow. Not sure if its because its brand new paint or what but it is slightly darker than my dad's Cobra. Its more blood red than anything. I think it looks SIK! Can't wait to paint the whole car. This thing is going to be badass. Laser Red and a 532 under the hood with custom suspension i think its going to blow people away at car shows but thats just my opinion [Big Grin]

Going to put the doors and trunk lid on tomorrow. The fenders were going to wait on because we're going to put the motor in before we paint the rest of the car. It would be easier with no fenders or anything to install the motor.

i am assembling the car on saturday, then 600 sanding the entire body and then working on the hood and getting it ready. Tomorrow the engine mounts are being welded in so i might put the motor in before assembling the frontend on saturday. The hood needs a lot of work though in my opinion. So it could be a week or two before we paint the entire thing.

whats wrong with the hood? Got pics of it?

will this car have a stiff street suspension, or more oriented towards drag?

Will it twist with my Griggs coupe [Wink]

It should do everything with ease, its fully adjustable.

The hood has nicks in it, little holes from bubbles forming in the fiberglass, it has a wave in it on the front. i posted a picture of it but i do have a better one i think, none show what i am talking about though.

that sucks... this will be a 4 inch cowl?

never liked none-stock hood on any car but i am anxious to see how it looks on yours.

Your rim selection is gonna be crucial for setting this car off from the bunch at the shows.

6 inch cowl, only one that "might" clear my engine lol i could have gotten a 7 but i think that would be pushing it on the looks factor.
The rims might have to wait, if this fire season is good to me i might be able to get them but for now a transmission, maybe some new seats and engine parts are my highest priorities and rims can be changed anytime but i saw some Shelby rims in person and i really liked them.

It's a demand-based business, and unfortunately when he does well it means that fires are up and burning. When you are put on a strike team and sent to a fire, you can get big big pay, sometimes 24/7 pay based on distance. I'm sure he will fill in with more.

prolly means if fire season is good to him and he gets a lot of strike teams, more fires = more overtime, that's why i just went to a OES station. Because as everyone knows it will be the worst fire season ever this year haha.

It's a demand-based business, and unfortunately when he does well it means that fires are up and burning. When you are put on a strike team and sent to a fire, you can get big big pay, sometimes 24/7 pay based on distance. I'm sure he will fill in with more.
Yeah that is correct, last year on a 15 day run (2 days for travel) as a GS3 i made 6K before taxes. This year i am a GS4, haven't figured out how much more i make an hour but i think its around 2 dollars i should make some good money. IF there are big fires that i get called for. Sitting around the station training and waxing the engine i'll only see 3K a month.

It's a dual edged sword, on one hand You want to make $ but on the other hand You aer'nt wishing for fires. I am going to get off My ass and get Mine back up and running and get My car to the track in a couple week's so You have given Me some motivation!!

if its out in the forest in the middle of no where and its not crowning i am fine with it burning [Wink] The forest needs to be cleaned up every now and then.

You better get that ride rolling, engine mounts are welded in the FB and i might put the motor in this saturday and then put it together or just put it together i don't know yet what i am going to do.

I'd throw in some fine silver dollar flakes in the ground coat. (under the candy) throw in aprox. 10.0-15.0 grams into a pint(16oz.) of paint. Just to give it some bling!

just my opinion. [patriot]

Since you already did the jambs and are probably not wanting to shift the color in a large way. Maybe just throw in... 3.5 grams to a pint.(fine silver dollar flakes)
Or.. if you want to go with modern times.(i.e. Chrysler 300m big flakes) Use large silver dollar flakes.(add 3.5 grams to a pint) This will spice it up and shift the color less than the small flakes.
The only reason why I say this is because in the picture... It looks a little dark. And the camera is not really showing much of a reflection. I understand it is only the jambs! Good luck. Your old school is looking good. [Whoo Whooooo!]

I have had the past 2 days off (and i have tomorrow off too) [worship] i have put some time into the Hood. It fits pretty damn good now and looks pretty good too. Just need to do some minor work on it and i should be set for painting it. I just want to sand the entire body with 600 grit sand paper before i do that. Since this fire season is so busy i am thinking i will paint it in November.
I do have some pics of the hood installed but i left my camera out in the garage so i will post them later

I just need to resand the body in some over spray areas and then i am going to paint it. Probably do it in 2 weeks when i get laid off for winter.

sanding with 1500 sand paper and then using rubbing compound to buff out the scratches and then using a polishing compound to polish it.

As i work at a body shop and have to sand and buff almost everyday, i would suggest that after you 1500, the go over it with 2500, and then again with 3000. And as far as buffing goes, if you can get your hands on the rite stuff i suggest u do a 4 stage buff, Wool pad first, white foam bad 2nd, grey foam pad 3rd, and finally a blue foam pad third. Fist 2 stages u use compound, the 3rd polish and the forth a type of polish called perfect finish its blue. Just my 2 cents.

does the forth type of polish really make it shine?
When i look into the paint it looks like all the scratches are gone from the sand paper.

Yea it does a lot its used on dark colors more often but when i do anything to my truck i always use it and it really helps to make sure swirl marks dont show up after a day or two. But thats not saying the car doesnt look amazing its really came a long way.

when you feel like u got all the scratches out, hit it one more time, then ur done. it won't really shine until u hit it with the pad glaze, then hand glaze plus wax.

a pro body man can compound the car for you in two rounds so it'll probably take u three or four rounds. what are you spinning the buffer at?

I got a lot of work done today on it. The entire rear is almost done. I put on the brake lights, chrome trim, bumper, trunk lid. All i need to do is put the back up lights in and get the MUSTANG lettering and that will be done. i am still waiting on the chrome drip rails. The rear though Looks really really good. I didn't get a picture of that yet though but i will be posting in a few some pictures of it in the sun. I had to re-polish some of the car and i took these pics before i did that but i don't think you'll be able to notice.

haha yeah, i like how my GT sounds. I am hoping the 532 has more of a cam sound to it with the GTs sound. Deep and bassy.
I keep posting the rear of the car no complete so here it really is complete, although the chrome strip on the trunk lid won't stay so i don't know what to do about that but you can't tell in the pics

Quick and dirty update, motor won't fit because of the bellhousing is hitting the firewall/floor [Frown] So we're going to cut the firewall out and then put the motor back in and fit the firewall around the bellhousing.

Had to cut out the firewall a lot to get this beast to fit right. Just need to weld up the firewall now and repaint it black and then i can leave the motor in for good.

i noticed that you have put on the trim around the side window channel... how hard are those to put on?? did you need any special tool?

It was easy as long as you first make sure you have it centered or the right lengths at both ends. Becareful with them cause they bend easily and once a part of it is clipped on its almost impossible to get it to come off.

My Laser red came out a little darker than the factory color.
Heres a comparison.

lol, now that's weird... What makes you think the previous owner gives an F?

Last thing I would ever want after selling a car is hearing from the new owner in the future about anything...
